New Polling, Business Letter Highlight Opposition to Anti-LGBTQ Legislation in Arizona
Today, HRC released an open letter from 40 major employers calling for lawmakers in states across the country to oppose bills that target LGBTQ people as well as polling results showing Arizonians’ broad opposition to anti-LGBTQ legislation.
Last week, on a party line vote, the Arizona House advanced HB 2706, a bill that would restrict transgender students from participating in sports teams that correspond with their gender identity. If the bill becomes law, any student at Arizona’s public and private schools, including K-12 schools, community colleges and universities, would be able to dispute an athlete’s gender. This bill discriminates and further stigmatizes trans students, and it threatens the privacy of all Arizonans by forcing people to take genetic tests.
“Anti-equality lawmakers have utilized every tool at their disposal, including misinformation and vicious, harmful rhetoric, to demonize LGBTQ people,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “However, our polling shows that Arizonans have no interest in pursuing divisiveness for the sake of divisiveness. In reality, Arizonans want lawmakers to focus on improving their lives and uniting us, not stoke racial, cultural and political divisions, or use transgender kids as pawns to further divide us. Arizonans want their state to be known for more than extremist legislation like the infamously anti-immigrant SB1070 and anti-LGBTQ SB 1062, which both drew national attention to the state, and now HB 2706. The state senate should scrap HB 2706.”

On behalf of HRC, Change Research surveyed 614 likely voters in Arizona from March 9 – March 10 in order to understand their reaction to the anti-LGBTQ legislative agenda being pushed by state legislators. A majority of voters oppose these anti-LGBTQ bills and support policies that protect the rights of LGBTQ Arizonians.

- Less than 1% of all voters, including less than 1% of Republicans, say that “regulating transgender rights” is among the most important issues for Arizona’s state government to address.
- 79% of voters support non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people and a more inclusive view on society.
- 55% of voters, including 58% of independents, believe bills like HB2706 “further stigmatiz[e] already vulnerable children to push their political agenda and further divide us.”
- 55% of voters, including a majority of independents, disapprove of the job Republicans in the legislature are doing on LGBTQ issues. Only 34% believe that these lawmakers are performing well at respecting the rights of LGBT people.
The polling was announced on a press call with Freedom for All Americans discussing the anti-transgender bill HB2706 and the impact it could have on the economy. Earlier this morning, HRC and FFAA released a national business letter signed by some of the nation’s leading employers calling for lawmakers in states across the country to oppose dozens of bills that target LGBTQ people, and transgender children in particular. These business leaders stressed the importance of fairness and opportunity for their customers, their employees and their employees’ families.

GLAAD, the world’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) media advocacy organization, announced today that the 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York will no longer occur next week following new guidance from the New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo around COVID-19. The 31st Annual GLAAD Media Awards are presented by Delta, Gilead, Hyundai, and Ketel One Family-Made Vodka.
GLAAD’s Rich Ferraro, Chief Communications Officer and an Executive Producer of the GLAAD Media Awards, issued the following statement:
“Given GLAAD’s long-standing commitment to the safety of our members, sponsors, and guests, the GLAAD Media Awards will no longer take place on March 19th in New York City. The team at GLAAD has been in communication with the City of New York and is following the latest recommendations from Governor Cuomo. We were planning to unveil a historic get-out-the-vote campaign at the event because everything is at stake for LGBTQ Americans this election year, and are hopeful that the program and GLAAD’s ongoing work to fight against anti-LGBTQ discrimination will continue to be supported and funded. Four years after he blamed a pair of murders on Pride parades, Rabbi Meir Mazuz is now claiming the LGBTQ+ celebrations are the reason behind the worldwide coronavirus outbreak.

Speaking at the Kisse Rahamim yeshiva in Bnei Brak, Israel, on Saturday, March 7, Mazuz said that a Pride parade is “a parade against nature, and whoever acts against nature, He who created nature will avenge him,” according to Israel Hayom. “When you do things against nature, you are sticking your hand in the fire and praying that the fire will not burn you. It will burn you! Here they have the insolence to revolt against nature, the Pride Parade, what are you proud of?”

He added: “All the countries that have this [evil] are all [suffering from the coronavirus] except for the Arab states that do not have this evil inclination, this thing, and aren’t suffering from this disease.”
And he blamed Iran’s outbreak on the nation’s “horrible Israel haters,” according to the report.

The Israel branch of the Anti-Defamation League criticized Mazuz’s comments. “It is regrettable that in times like these when the whole world comes together to eradicate coronavirus, Rabbi Mazuz finds it appropriate to blame the virus’s outbreak on the LGBTQ community,” the organization said in a statement. “We harshly condemn his statements and urge him to apologize.”
The Ne’emanei Torah Va’Avodah movement also issued a statement denouncing the rabbi’s remarks, according to The Times of Israel. “Using this time of need to incite against the LGBT community is unacceptable,” the statement read. “Trying to get people to return to religion cannot come at the price of harming others.”
As PinkNews points out, a California-based pastor also blamed the COVID-19 outbreak on LGBTQ+ individuals. Last week, Rev. Steven Andrew of the USA Christian Church declared March as “Repent of LGBT Sin Month” and said in a press releasethat “obeying God protects the USA from diseases, such as the coronavirus.”
