Iran is forcing gay men to undergo sex reassignment surgery or be executed
Well, this is terrifying. The government in Iran has begun forcing gay men to undergo sex reassignment surgery or risk being executed in an effort to cleanse the country of all homosexuality.
Being transgender became legal in Iran in 1987. Homosexuality, however, remains punishable by death. In an interview with the Sun, activist Shadi Amin explains that the Iranian government considers homosexuality a disease. Often, the “treatment” prescribed for the disease is changing a person’s sex.
“The government believes that if you are a gay man your soul is that of a woman and you should change your body.” Amin, who fled the country in 1983, explains. “They think this is a way to fight the existence of homosexual people because you change their body and you solve the problem.”
According to Amin, the government have been giving gay men a choice: have the surgery or face torture and execution.
She says that many men “would rather carry out mass surgeries than executions because they know the world is watching them.”
Human rights activist Peter Tatchell adds, “The ayatollah’s are seeking to eliminate homosexuality by pressuring or forcing gay men to undergo gender reassignment surgery to make them ‘women’.”
“Some gay men agree to become trans women to protect themselves from prosecution and execution when they have sex with men. They don’t want to be trans but fear being hanged if they don’t transition.”
According to the Iranian government, over 4,000 sex reassignment surgeries are conducted in the country every year, with most being paid for by the government. Iran carries out more sex reassignment surgeries than any other nation in the world, second only to Thailand.
Amin believes the number is actually much higher than 4,000, claiming she spoke to one doctor who told her they performed between 30 to 40 surgeries a month, sometimes as many as three per day.
“This shows that it’s big business for some doctors and many of them are not even specialists for trans people,” Amin says. “Many of them are cosmetic surgeons.”
Amin adds that, after paying for their surgeries, the government cuts off any additional support for trans people. As a result, many are shunned by their communities and are forced into doing sex work, where they often being targets for sexual violence and rape.
“There is nothing which criminalizes attacks against trans people. After the surgery, they have no rights anymore. There is no physiological support after the surgery.”
Tatchell adds, “Iran’s policy of encouraging gender reassignment has nothing to do with supporting trans people. It is motivated by a desire to eradicate homosexuality and enforce traditional male and female gender norms.”
It is believed Iran has executed between 4,000 and 6,000 gay men since 1979, though the actual number is not known.

Beware the “homovirus” warns right-wing pastor in unhinged coronavirus rant
Get ready to feel ill, folks.
As the nation continues to take precautions over the spread of the coronavirus, right-wing pastor and talk radio host E.W. Jackson has taken aim at another threat to civilization: the “homovirus.” In other words, queer folks.
During an edition of Jackson’s talk show The Awakening this week, the pastor drifted from an attack on Virginia Democratic Congressman Bobby Scott–Jackson’s congressman and an LGBTQ rights supporter–into condemning queer people as destructive to society.

“The last thing in the world the black community needs is more destruction of the family, more attacks on the family, and that’s all this whole homosexual movement amounts to,” Jackson raged. “It is a virulent, violent attack. You know what? I’m going to get in trouble for this one, but this is right off the presses: It is the homovirus for the family.”
“Of course, I am speaking from a spiritual and a psychological perspective,” Jackson went on. “I hope that no one misunderstands my little putting together of two things, because you know we’re talking about this coronavirus. I’m not talking about physical illness. I’m not talking about pronouncing any physical curses on people. I feel the need to explain myself here. I’m talking about the spiritual and psychological element that is introduced into a community that is already having major problems with family formation, and family maintenance, and rearing of children, and now you want to throw this garbage into the mix as well.”
Jackson has a long history of attacks on the LGBTQ community. Last year, he claimed the United States will become a “homocracy” should Mayor Pete Buttigieg win the Presidency. Among his other ridiculous claims, Jackson also once asserted that doing yoga can lead to demonic possession.

An apparent white supremacist (Donald Trump supporter?) displayed a Nazi flag at a Bernie Sanders rally in Phoenix on Thursday night:
After he was escorted out of the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, the man shouted the N-word at one of Sanders’ black supporters:

Sanders, who is Jewish, didn’t initially notice the flag, but turned around in time to see the unidentified man being escorted out. “Whoever it was, I think they’re a little outnumbered tonight,” Sanders said.
The Hill notes that Sanders is the son of Polish immigrants who fled the Holocaust in Europe, where many of his relatives were killed.
Brianna Westbrook, a national surrogate for the Sanders campaign, told the Washington Post the incident was one of several involving protesters who disrupted the Phoenix rally.
“Later in the night, other people waving banners bearing President Trump’s name also got into minor scuffles with Sanders supporters and were promptly removed from the venue by uniformed officers,” the Post reported.

1) Disney and Pixar’s Onward hits theaters today. The film follows two teenage elf brothers who embark on an extraordinary quest to discover if there is still a little magic left out there. Out actor Lena Waithe is in the film as Officer Spencer, a queer police officer they run into on their journey. “It’s a modern fantasy world and we want to represent the modern world,” director Dan Scanlon told Yahoo of the representation. 2) Young Adult Novel Gracefully Grayson, which follows a young transgender girl on her journey to tell the world she’s trans, will be adapted into a feature film. Non-binary filmmaker Henry Alberto will pen the screenplay based on the book by Ami Polonksy, and Yeardley Smith’s Paperclip Ltd will produce the film.

3) Documentary Shakedown, which follows the Black queer women and men who were active in the lesbian strip club scene of the early aughts, will be the first non-adult release from Pornhub. The film is directed by Leilah Weinraub and has played in part in exhibits at museums in Manhattan. Netflix’s upcoming teen romantic comedy The Half of It, directed by out filmmaker Alice Wu will be released on May 1. The film, which was recently selected for Tribeca Film Festival, follows a teenage girl who ends up helping a jock write love letters to the girl they both have a crush on.

4) An HBO adaptation of popular Sony PlayStation game The Last Of Us is in the works from game creator Neil Druckmann and writer Craig Mazin. The post-apocalyptic game follows survivor Joel and teenager Ellie, who is a lesbian. In addition to the series, The Last Of Us’ sequel game will be released this May.Out Slave Play writer Jeremy O. Harris has signed a deal with HBO and is developing a pilot of the network as well. He currently is working on season two of Euphoria.

5) Out Schitt’s Creek actor Emily Hampshire has been cast in upcoming Epix series Jerusalem’s Lot, as Rebecca Morgan, a woman writing a story on family that begins to uncover a mystery. Out actor Charlie Barnett has been cast in NBC pilot Ordinary Joe, as Eric Payne one of the closes friends of the titular Joe. A new trailer has been released for the second season of BET’s Boomerang, which includes several queer characters in its ensemble. The show also announced that its second season will be entired directed by women of color. Watch the trailer below.
6) Netflix has released a new trailer for the third season of Elite, which will be released on March 13 on the streaming service. The show features several queer characters in an elite Spanish boarding school.Quibi’s Gayme Show, hosted by out comedians Matt Rogers and Dave Mizzoni, has announced a premiere date of April 6. The show is a game show based around queer culture. Quibi also announced You Ain’t Got These, a series hosted by Lena Waithe about sneakers, which will also premiere on April 6.
7) Out singer Lady Gaga announced her sixth album Chromatica will be released on April 10. She also announced a “Chromatica Ball” this summer, hitting six cities.
