GLAAD calls attention to Arizona House Bill 2706, seeking to ban transgender youth from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity

GLAAD today called on media to focus attention on House Bill 2706, a dangerous anti-trans bill introduced by Republican Rep. Nancy Barto which has now made it to the Arizona Senate after passing through the House of Representatives on March 3. GLAAD is working to elevate ways to take action against the bill with local activists on the ground in Arizona.

House Bill 2706, branded as the “Save Women’s Sports Act”, bans transgender youth from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity. HB 2706 would require that “an interscholastic or intramural athletic team or sport that is sponsored by an educational institution in Arizona must be based on biological sex.” The bill also states that if disputed, an athlete would be forced to establish their sex through a genetic test from a doctor, with public disclosure of results, in order to continue participating. The law would apply at both public and private schools, including community colleges and universities, and could also affect cisgender (non-transgender) athletes for who are speculated to be transgender based on a number of inaccurate and concerning factors.

OPPOSITION TO THE BILL:

During the House hearing, Democratic Rep. Kirsten Engel said, “The impact will not be to protect women’s sports, instead it’s gonna make women’s sports a total battleground of lawsuits.” She continued: “It’s gonna bring people out of the corners of the field to cast accusations — the liability here is so broad that I have very severe concerns that some schools will find some excuse to — simply not have games.”

Rep. César Chávez has also spoken out against the bill on Twitter, stating that he will “continue to fight for the defeat of this hateful legislation” as it heads to the Senate:

Yesterday, members of the Republican party consciously voted to infringe on the rights of #transgender children. Once again, attacking the #LGBTQ community. HB2706 makes it’s way to the Senate where I will continue to fight for the defeat of this hateful legislation. pic.twitter.com/UYhsHgQrlI

In addition to strong opposition from House Democrats, local and national businesses including the Arizona Diamondbacks, PayPal and Uber have also opposed the bill.

GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis also spoke out today: “Republican state representative Nancy Barto’s so-called “Save Women’s Sports Act” is not about helping girls or women; it is about harming young transgender students in Arizona in cruel and dangerous ways that will also affect cisgender students,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President & CEO. “As activists and politicians who oppose the bill have argued, this bill is part of a systematic attack on the protections of transgender people, and continues to promote the false narrative that transgender youth are somehow threats in their communities, including in sports. Trans students around the country have shown that is a blatant lie.”

House Bill 2706 is one of many anti-trans bills introduced in State legislatures across the U.S. this year, with many targeting trans inclusion in sports. As of March 2, 2020, there have been at least 21 state bills introduced with the goal of excluding transgender youth from athletics, in states including Alabama, Idaho, South Dakota, Tennessee, and more.

Earlier this year, GLAAD also worked with Arizona-based organization ONE Community and other local activists to spotlight national attention on Arizona State Bill 1082, which attempted to require teachers to instruct LGBTQ students to be abstinent. After amplifying the news to a national level, the bill was ultimately killed.

BREAKING: “Drag Race” disqualifies Sherry Pie over catfishing scandal

BREAKING: “Drag Race” disqualifies Sherry Pie over catfishing scandal

Well, that didn’t take long!

Joey Gugliemelli, a.k.a. Sherry Pie, currently appears on Season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. This week, he was accused of catfishing multiple young men by pretending to be a casting director and tricking them into sending him degrading videos of themselves.

One man, 23-year-old Josh Lillyman, told BuzzFeed News he was pressured by Gugliemelli to masturbate on camera as part of a fake audition process.

“I did everything he asked me to because at that point he had built up so much detail for the show that I was truly convinced it was real and associated with HBO,” he said. “It took a lot for me to break that delusion. I was willingly doing all the things he was asking me to.”

Now, VH1 and production company World of Wonder have issued a statement saying Joey Gugliemelli/Sherry Pie has been officially disqualified from the show.

“In light of recent developments and Sherry Pie’s statement, Sherry Pie has been disqualified from RuPaul’s Drag Race,” the statement reads. “Out of respect for the hard work of the other queens, VH1 will air the season as planned. Sherry will not appear in the grand finale scheduled to be filmed later this spring.”

Yesterday, 28-year-old Gugliemelli took to Facebook to issue a blanket apology for his predatory behavior.

“I want to start by saying how sorry I am that I caused such trauma and pain and how horribly embarrassed and disgusted I am with myself,” he wrote. “I know that the pain and hurt that I have caused will never go away and I know that what I did was wrong and truly cruel.”

He went on to say that he has struggled with mental health issues and is currently seeking treatment in New York City.

“I truly apologize to everyone I have hurt with my actions,” Gugliemelli said. “I also want to say how sorry I am to my sisters of season 12 and honestly the whole network and production company. All I can do is change the behavior and that starts with me and doing that work.”

This is Joey, I want to start by saying how sorry I am that I caused such trauma and pain and how horribly embarrassed…

Season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race will continue as scheduled tonight at 8 p.m. on VH1, although it remains to be seen how the show will address Gugliemelli’s disqualification in the upcoming episodes, which were pre-taped.

One Million Moms: Marvel is Trying to Indoctrinate Families with Gay Superhero

Phastos

Back in December, we reported that The Eternals will feature Marvel’s first openly gay superhero, in the form of Phastos, played by Atlanta star Brian Tyree Henry.

Right on cue, anti-LGBT hate group One Millions Moms is calling for a boycott of the film, set for release on Nov. 6.

“There have been numerous attempts by the entertainment industry to indoctrinate families with the LGBTQ agenda discretely and now more overtly,” the group wrote Friday. “1MM wants parents to be forewarned so they are not caught off guard with this upcoming Marvel film. This would surprise most conservative families since it would be unexpected so 1MM needs your help in getting the word out to as many people as possible. Marvel has decided to be politically correct instead of providing family friendly programming. Marvel should stick to entertaining, not pushing an agenda. Please share this with your friends and family to make sure they are aware of the gay superhero character in The Eternals and not blindsided by it. As moms, we all want to know when Marvel is attempting to desensitize our family by normalizing the LGBTQ lifestyle.”

Entertainment recently reported that Phastos will kiss his husband, played by gay Little America star Haaz Sleiman (below), in The Eternals.

“It’s a beautiful, very moving kiss,” Sleiman said. “Everyone cried on set. For me, it’s very important to show how loving and beautiful a queer family can be. Brian Tyree Henry is such a tremendous actor and brought so much beauty into this part, and at one point I saw a child in his eyes, and I think it’s important for the world to be reminded that we in the queer community were all children at one point. We forget that because we’re always depicted as sexual or rebellious; we forget to connect on that human part.”

Cinemablend has a full breakdown of Phastos’ character from the pages of Marvel Comics.
