Kobe Bryant’s death sparks anti-homophobia campaign in Brazil

The death last weekend of basketball player Kobe Bryant has prompted an outpouring of grief around the world. Perhaps more surprisingly, it’s sparked an anti-homophobia campaign in Brazil.

More specifically, it’s led to a call to combat homophobia in Brazilian soccer.

Bryant spent his career playing for the LA Lakers. He was famed for wearing the number 24 shirt.

In Brazil, the number 24 represents the deer in an illegal but popular Brazilian numbers game commonly just called the animals game.

However, the deer is a creature associated with homosexuality. And because of this, many footballers and clubs refuse to use 24 on soccer shirts in case it prompts abuse.

Talk about fragile masculinity!

Following Bryant’s death, Reuters reports Bahia soccer club and football magazine Corner have launched a campaign to remove the stigma of the number 24. The magazine started sharing images of soccer shirts with the number 24 online with the hashtag #PedeA24 (Ask for 24). Bahia is using the hashtag #NúmeroDoRespeito.

Bahia’s president Guilherme Bellintani said his players will begin to wear the number: “Football can be a channel to accentuate the worst of our society, such as racism, aggression, violence and intolerance, but it can also be used in different ways, for culture, affection, sensibility and to improve human relations.”

The first to embrace the campaign is Bahia’s midfielder Flávio Medeiros da Silva, better known simply known as Flávio. He wore the shirt for the first time during a match on Tuesday and said he will continue to wear it through until December.

“I think it’s very silly that nobody uses the number 24 in Brazil. We have to respect everyone, regardless of gender, race and sexual option,” the player said.

Basketball legend Bryant, 41, along with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna (‘Gigi’), died with seven others when a helicopter they were traveling in crashed in thick fog in Southern California last Sunday.

Bryant’s widow, Vanessa, made her first statement about the crash on Wednesday. She thanked all those who had shown her and her three other daughters love and support, “during this horrific time … We are completely devastated by the sudden loss of my adoring husband, Kobe — the amazing father of our children; and my beautiful, sweet Gianna – a loving, thoughtful, and wonderful daughter, and amazing sister to Natalia, Bianka, and Capri.”

Pompeo Declines to Meet with Ukrainian LGBT Activists Who Desperately Need U.S. Support

Pompeo Declines to Meet with Ukrainian LGBT Activists Who Desperately Need U.S. Support

When U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo meets with Ukrainian civic society leaders on Friday, they won’t include LGBT activists.

The State Department determined which leaders were invited to the meeting, but offered no further explanation.

As a result, Pompeo won’t get to hear about a troubling surge of anti-LGBT hate crimes and violence in Ukraine, which police have failed to properly investigate, or the community’s struggle for recognition from the government.

The Daily Beast reports: So Pompeo will not see any of the documentation from PrideHub, a community center on Podylskyi Lane in the center of Kharkiv. He’ll miss, for instance, the video footage of far-right activists pouring animal blood all over the center’s door a few weeks ago; and of somebody in a balaclava writing “Death to LGBT” on the same door in December. … After every incident, leaders of the LGBTQ community ask police to investigate the attacks. Without visible results. This year, the official answer from the Interior Ministry said the incidents on Nov. 11, Nov. 26, and Dec. 16 near PrideHub, “have been registered” and police are going to make efforts to identify the perpetrators. But the LGBTQ community has heard this before. “Police have closed down several previous investigations into the attacks on us by far-right groups who used tear gas and smoke grenades against us,” Sharyhina said. “Nobody has been punished. That means violence is not going to stop.”

WATCH NOW: Record Number of LGBTQ Super Bowl Ads with Lil Nas X, Jonathan Van Ness, Lilly Singh, Katie Sowers, Trace Lysette, Isis King, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, and RuPaul’s Drag Race Alumni

WATCH NOW: Record Number of LGBTQ Super Bowl Ads with Lil Nas X, Jonathan Van Ness, Lilly Singh, Katie Sowers, Trace Lysette, Isis King, Ellen DeGeneres, Portia de Rossi, and RuPaul’s Drag Race Alumni

A rainbow wave will be rolling through Super Bowl LIV as LGBTQ icons step out on the field and during commercial breaks. At least seven LGBTQ-inclusive ads — a record high — will air during the game including one from Microsoft which features Katie Sowers, the trailblazing gay Offensive Assistant Coach of the 49ers. Sowers is set to take the field during the game and will also tell her powerful story in one of the highly anticipated LGBTQ-inclusve ads:

As part of our work, GLAAD advocates for brands and companies to include LGBTQ people and families across advertising media. LGBTQ people have often been invisible during the Super Bowl – advertising’s biggest night – or relegated to ads featuring homophobic tropes and stereotypes.

This year, at least six major brands are joining Microsoft in changing that.

Pop Tarts will feature Jonathan Van Ness, non-binary star of Netflix’s Queer Eye:

Sabra hummus features drag performers Kim Chi and Miz Cracker, alumni of the Emmy and GLAAD Media Award-winning series RuPaul’s Drag Race. Sabra released a teaser video earlier this week:

TurboTax brings trans actresses Isis King (When They See Us) and Trace Lysette (Transparent, Hustlers), along with members of the ballroom community, together to tell the world that “all people are tax people:”

Doritos will air a dance battle between out singer Lil Nas X and actor Sam Elliott:

Olay chose bisexual TV host Lilly Singh to portray an astronaut alongside Busy Phillips and retired astronaut Nicole Stott as part of the Procter & Gamble brand’s #MakeSpaceForWomen campaign. Lilly will also host the GLAAD Media Awards next month in New York City.

Ellen DeGeneres was previously featured in a Super Bowl ad and returns this year alongside her wife Portia de Rossi in an ad for Amazon Alexa:

“The level of diverse LGBTQ inclusion from at least seven brands during advertising’s biggest night, coupled with Katie Sowers’ trailblazing role on the field as Offensive Assistant Coach of the 49ers, mark a rainbow wave at the Super Bowl this year,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “GLAAD has long been advocating for brands to feature LGBTQ people in ads. Now, we cannot wait for American families to see and cheer on LGBTQ icons like Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, Lil Nas X, Lilly Singh, Katie Sowers, Trace Lysette, Isis King, Jonathan Van Ness, Miz Cracker, and Kim Chi – it’s about time.”

GLAAD also launched a petition calling on the American Family Association’s ‘One Million Moms’ (OMM) project, and its executive director, Monica Cole, to call it quits after the AFA project spoke out against one of this year’s LGBTQ-inclusive ads. The Southern Poverty Law Center lists the American Family Association as a designated hate group for its anti-LGBTQ activism. The AFA’s OMM project counts under 5,000 followers on Twitter and has a long list of failed online actions against LGBTQ-inclusive brands. The AFA’s OMM project most recently spoke out against a Burger King ad that included the word ‘damn.’

Click here to sign GLAAD’s petition.

The so-called “One Million Moms” are at it again – this time speaking out against a Super Bowl ad that includes drag queens. It’s clear that the hate group’s tactics aren’t working, and it’s time for them to pack it up and go home.t.co/QujvegmvrK

— GLAAD (@glaad) January 30, 2020

“Leading brands have learned that fringe anti-LGBTQ organizations like Monica Cole and her American Family Association ‘One Million Moms’ project, are not a reflection of where Americans are. Family-friendly today means including all families, including LGBTQ families,” continued GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis.

Super Bowl LIV marks the largest number of LGBTQ-inclusive ads during the big game.

In 2007, Snickers pulled an ad after it aired during the Super Bowl and depicted two men who accidentally kiss, and then become disgusted. An alternative version of the ad had the men begin to beat each other. Several ads over the years have sparked debate for treatment of outdated stereotypes and tropes.

In 2014, Coca-Cola was celebrated for an ad featuring a diverse collection of American families, including a family with two dads. In 2018, Coca-Cola used gender neutral pronouns in a spot. Esteemed journalist and author Samantha Allen noted at the time: “Given the severe underrepresentation—indeed, the near invisibility of non-binary people in the media, the importance of 100 million people hearing “them” used as a gender-neutral, third-person pronoun cannot be overstated.”

LGBTQ celebrities including RuPaul, Ellen DeGeneres and Neil Patrick Harris have also appeared in Super Bowl ads over the years. RuPaul appeared in a 2000 ad for WebEx video conferencing software, DeGeneres appeared in a Beats Music ad in 2014 and Harris appeared in a Heineken Light ad in 2017, as well as a CBS teaser ad for the Super Bowl in 2013. In 2005, Carson Kressley co-starred with Cindy Crawford in an iconic Diet Pepsi ad.

Super Bowl LIV airs this Sunday, February 2 on FOX. Jennifer Lopez, who received GLAAD’s Vanguard Award for her allyship, will perform during half-time with Shakira.

Madonna: “Size matters, don’t pretend that it doesn’t!”

Madonna: “Size matters, don’t pretend that it doesn’t!”

A post shared by Madonna (@madonna) on

Madonna, it seems, is a size queen. At least, that’s what she’s informed her British fans.

The singer’s Madame X tour has reached London this week – much to the relief of ticket holders. The 61-year-old has been plagued with health problems during the tour, leading to ten dates being cancelled.

This included the first of her 14 nights at the London Palladium, but she bounced back on Wednesday evening.

During part of the Madame X show, Madonna, 61, takes a break from singing to enjoy some banter with the audience. For her first London show, it turned decidedly lewd.

“What do you call a man with a small penis?” the singer asked the audience. “The answer is, I wouldn’t f**king know. I’ve never been with a guy with a small d**k. You know size matters, don’t pretend that it doesn’t!”

Madonna’s past lovers include husbands Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, actor Warren Beatty, singer Vanilla Ice and model Tony Ward. She’s rumored to be currently dating one of her backing dancers, Ahlamalik Williams, 25.

One might ask – if she’s never had a lover with a small dick – how she would know that size matters, but let’s not analyze things too much…

It wasn’t the evening’s only moment of sexual innuendo. At another point in the show, she asked for a chair to be brought out to the stage so she could sit down.

“Usually I kneel for about 20 minutes and that’s fine. I’m good at it, so I’ve been told.” she quipped.

Demonstrating she knows her audience well, she also joked about trawling Grindr when she needs to find herself a new assistant.

After grabbing a beer from one audience member, she said, “There you go, we have just shared STDs.”

She also referred to the fact that when she married former husband Ritchie and relocated to England, her accent changed – something she didn’t realize at the time.

“I didn’t know what anyone was talking about until I heard old interviews of myself. And then I was horrified and flabbergasted. Why did you let me do that to myself?

“It’s all Guy Ritchie’s fault. He made me to it.”

The show received generally positive reviews. The Independent called it an “eyeball-twisting audiovisual assault with more action than a Marvel movie.” PinkNews said the “incredible” show “lived up to the hype.”

Related: A Madonna fan is suing her for starting her concerts late

Besides the quality of the performance, fans were also relieved the singer turned up on time. Some attendees at previous shows have complained that she has hit the stage over two hours late on some occasions, leading one disgruntled fan to recently attempt to sue the singer.

In London, the performance began just 20 minutes after the advertised show time. She told the audience she was under a curfew: Westminster council, which oversees the area where the Palladium’s located, warned her that if she went beyond 11pm, she’d be fined.

Other venues may wish to take note!
