BREAKING: Pelosi Moving to Send Impeachment to Senate Next Week

Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Speaker Nancy Pelosi indicated Friday that the House will likely transmit articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump to the Senate next week.

“I have asked Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler to be prepared to bring to the Floor next week a resolution to appoint managers and transmit articles of impeachment to the Senate,” Pelosi wrote in a letter to her Democratic colleagues late Friday morning.

The House impeached Trump last month on charges that he abused power in dealings with Ukraine and obstructed efforts by Congress to investigate. But the trial cannot begin until the House transmits the articles of impeachment.

Pelosi has withheld the articles for weeks in an effort to pressure Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to release rules for the trial.

More to come …

Moments before the release of her ‘Dear Colleague’ letter, @SpeakerPelosi was asked if she expects a fair trial in the Senate.

“No,” she replied.

Gender Identity Law Takes Effect in Chile

Gender Identity Law Takes Effect in Chile

Update: January 10, 2020

On December 27, 2019, Chile’s Gender Identity Law — Ley de Identidad de Género, which provides legal protections for gender identity recognition, went into effect. In a message celebrating the landmark occasion, Alessia Injoque, the current and first transgender woman to serve as Executive President of Fundación Iguales, a leading LGBTQ organization in the country, stated that “the most important thing is that with this, the State recognizes that trans people exist.” With the law, transgender people over age 14 are able to update their names and gender identity on legal documents. HRC celebrates with advocates in Chile who have waited for more than six years since this vital bill was introduced, and another year since it was signed.

HRC hailed the passage of a Gender Identity Law — or Ley de Identidad de Género in Chile — signed by Chilean President Sebastián Piñera. The measure allows transgender people over the age of 14 to update their names on legal documents and guarantees their right to be officially addressed according to their true gender.

“This historic decision marks a milestone for LGBTQ rights in Chile and in South America,” said former HRC Global Director Ty Cobb. “We commend the efforts of all the LGBTQ advocates involved, including our Chilean partners at Fundación Iguales, who worked tirelessly for five years to achieve this victory. While this legislation removes roadblocks for many trans people, there is still important progress to be made — especially for transgender youth.”

“The rights that were excluded from transgender people in Chile are being acknowledged at last,” said Juan Enrique Pi Arriagada, former Executive President of Fundación Iguales. “After years of fighting to ensure their legal recognition, we celebrate this historic triumph that will change the lives of many of those who, for far too long, lacked protections and lived in the shadows. While we celebrate this historic landmark, we must keep working to continue the fight towards full equality.”

In another historic development in Latin America, Uruguay enacted a groundbreaking law last month expanding the country’s existing gender identity law to include transgender people under the age of 18 and providing important additional protections. These include a right to access gender-affirming surgery and hormone therapy, reserving one percent of government jobs for transgender people, and establishing a pension fund to compensate transgender people who were persecuted during Uruguay’s military dictatorship.

While Chile’s new law is an important step forward, it does not apply to transgender people under the age of 14 and continues to unjustly limit their ability to update their identity documents to reflect their authentic selves.

HRC’s Global Workplace Equality Program continues to partner with Fundación Iguales and businesses to advance LGBT inclusion across Chilean workplaces through its Equidad CL program. The bill is another sign of progress in Chile, where the private sector is adopting  LGBT-inclusive policies and there is growing visibility of transgender Chileans’ stories.

A rising actor and model has died at the age of 27. Harry Hains’ death was announced via his mother, Jane Badler, on Instagram.

She posted: “On Jan 7 my beautiful son died . He was 27 and had the world at his feet . But sadly he struggled with mental illness and addiction . A brilliant spark shone bright too short a time .. I will miss you Harry every day of my life.”

She added that there will be a memorial service for Hains at Hollywood Forever cemetery this Sunday (Jan, 12). No cause of death has been revealed.

Badler is also an actor. She appeared in Austalia’s Neighbours, along with Falcon Crest in the US. She played Diana in the 1983 cult sci-fi series, V.

Hains was raised in Melbourne, Australia. He moved to London and to pursue careers in modeling and acting, before relocating to New York and then Los Angeles.

He appeared in a 2015 episode of American Horror Story and a 2019 episode of The OA, among other acting credits. He was signed to Chadwick Modelling Agency. He also performed as a musician under the moniker Antiboy.

Related: “American Horror Story” is harming this actor’s mental health, so they’re sitting one out

Last year, in an interview with gay magazine Attitude, he expressed the desire to become a “gender-fluid” icon.

When asked to describe his musical persona, Antiboy, he said, he was “a trans human/android from a future in which all social constructs – including gender, sexuality and race – have been destroyed. Labels are no longer being used to describe human behavior and characteristics.”

When asked if he used any labels to describe his own gender or sexuality, he replied, “Everything is on a spectrum. We are not one thing. We can be anything.”

In an interview with Boys by Girls last March, he again said he preferred not to apply labels to himself (he used he/him pronouns).

“I don’t like the idea of labels. If I had to pick a label it would be in the realm of gender fluid. I know that I am born male but I don’t think I represent what it means to be a man. I believe we should be whatever we want. It gets kind of confusing when we start labeling ourselves so I try to stay away from labels.”

He added, “I grew up in Melbourne and I had a very open and accepting family. Dating someone of either sex didn’t make a difference to me.”

Hains’ final Instagram posting was on New Year’s Eve: “To 2020! The new era has already begun. So let’s all keep only moving forward, staying so present to enjoy each and every moment throughout this beautiful new beginning. Happy New Year, peeps. So much love and gratitude for all in my life.”

Brazil’s Supreme Court Sides with Netflix, Allows ‘Gay Jesus’ Film

Brazil’s Supreme Court Sides with Netflix, Allows ‘Gay Jesus’ Film

Brazil’s Supreme Court has reversed a ruling that would have required Netflix to remove a satirical film depicting Jesus as gay.

On Wednesday, a judge in Rio ordered the streaming service to ax the Christmas-themed comedy, The First Temptation of Christ, citing a conflict with the nation’s Catholic values.

Millions of people signed a petition calling for the film’s removal, and on Christmas Eve, protesters fire-bombed the headquarters of the comedy group that produced it,  Porta dos Fundos.

Netflix quickly appealed the judge’s decision, leading to Thursday’s decision from Supreme Court President José Antonio Dias Toffoli.

“It is not to be assumed that a humorous satire has the magic power to undermine the values of the Christian faith, whose existence goes back more than two thousand years,” Dias Toffoli wrote.

More from the Associated Press: Still, the Rio judge’s ruling has revived scrutiny on what his critics call censorship under the far-right government of President Jair Bolsonaro. His administration has vowed to fight “cultural Marxism” and openly supports Christian values. Several shows, plays and conferences have been canceled since Bolsonaro took office just over one year ago. On Wednesday, judge Benedicto Abicair ruled against the film following a petition by a Brazilian Catholic organization that argued the “honor of millions of Catholics” was hurt by the airing of “The First Temptation of Christ.” … In its complaint filed to the Supreme Court, Netflix’s lawyers argued that the judge’s decision amounts to censorship and has an impact “equivalent to that of the bomb used in the terrorist attack against the headquarters” of the comedy group. “It silences by means of fear and intimidation.”
