Gay guys describe their worst experiences with homophobia

Let’s certainly hope “It Gets Better,” because a lot of men have endured horrific treatment at the hands of peers and strangers just for being who they are. Some of those guys shared their scariest brushes with homophobia in a recent Reddit thread, and their anecdotes are appalling. Here’s a sampling, edited only for readability:

  • My so-called friend asked me [if] I am gay because I act very cartoony. I said no. Then he told me I am his best friend. Then he said he will kill me if I’m gay. He said his family shot gays. We lived far apart and went to different colleges, so after three years, I told him I’m gay, and he blocked me. He called me after two months with another number to say sorry, but I was over him at that point. I blocked him again and told him not to call me ever again.

  • I was 13 in a Geography class, and the guys on the same table as me were discussing how much they’d love to torture a gay guy.
  • My best friend in high school was really Republican and homophobic, actually, but I guess the worst experience was when I was bullied on the school bus and these guys gathered around my seat and just talked sh*t about how obviously gay I was, despite the fact [that] at that time I was trying my best to hide it, so it hurt even more that being in the closet didn’t spare me the harassment. I also was called f*ggot at a bus stop just by some random passerby. I went the f*ck off on him. You could tell he was not expecting that lol.

When I was on a first date with this guy and a group of people from my background started making fun of us in my mother tongue throughout the entire date. They assumed I was a different background. I had to pretend nothing was off and that I was enjoying myself. When you’re slightly closeted, it was like hearing all of your deep doubts out loud, but I couldn’t even react.

  • In elementary school, a group of guys tried to take all my clothes off to find out if I was really a boy because I was so feminine. Those same guys would follow me around town on their bikes and kick and spit on me. I was also forced to play sports by my parents and was on teams with them. They would throw rocks at me constantly. Or the many times in elementary school where we would play various types of tag in gym or recess and I couldn’t play because nobody wanted to touch me.
  • In the late ‘80s and through the ‘90s, I was deeply involved in HIV testing, counseling, and prevention. I was also involved in helping isolated and abandoned gay men who were dying of AIDS. This was in a conservative part of the country. On three separate occasions, a gang of gay-bashers came to my house and threatened violence. The first time, a neighbor came out with a shotgun and told them to get and not come back. I ran off the two following groups with my own shotgun. Those were exciting times, in the worst possible way.

Jake Borelli to Star in Gay Road Trip Rom-Com ‘The Thing About Harry’

Grey’s Anatomy star Jake Borelli is set to star in The Thing About Harry, a Valentine’s Day-themed romantic comedy road trip movie directed by Peter Paige and co-starring newcome Niko Terho, and also starring Queer Eye‘s Karamo Brown, and Britt Baron.

Deadline reports: “Borelli will play Sam, a handsome, funny, neurotic, intelligent young gay man who combines a scathing wit with an overly idealistic worldview. Sam came out when he was still in high school, something that took a lot of courage in his small Missouri town, but was bullied constantly. Terho will portray Harry, an emotionally uncomplicated, promiscuous player who has always left a string of broken hearts in his wake. Under the surface, Harry actually yearns for love, family and stability, but the thought of commitment still terrifies him.”

TV Line adds: “Queer Eye‘s Karamo Brown will co-star as Paul, a gay man who is both ‘exceedingly well put-together’ yet ‘overbearing and pretentious,’ while GLOW‘s Britt Baron will play Stasia, Sam’s edgy and opinionated best friend. Peter Paige (The Fosters) will direct the movie and appear as Sam’s warm-hearted roommate, Casey.”

Said executive producers Paige, Greg Gugliotta and F.J. Denny in a statement: “It’s been an honor to partner with Freeform in making great television with LGBTQ+ characters as leads. True equality can only be achieved when you see yourself reflected in the movies, music and stories that paint our culture. As young gay men in the 90s, whenever a rom-com opened, we would watch the leading lady fall in love, and imagine what it would be like if the boy was saying all those things to another boy. We’ve always wanted to make a movie — an unabashedly romantic comedy — that queer boys wouldn’t have to translate. It’s rewarding to take the genre to a new, all-inclusive level.”

I don’t know about you, but I am LOVING this Dolly Parton media renaissance we’re living in. In addition to a fantastic podcast and an upcoming Netflix series, you can celebrate one of the greatest artists of all time with Dolly Parton: Here She Comes Again!, Tuesday at 10 p.m. Eastern on ABC. The tribute features a sit-down with Robin Roberts.

If you’re still following this season of American Horror Story, first off, maybe you should talk to someone? But, if you’re committed to seeing this trash fire through, 1984 wraps Wednesday at 10 p.m. Eastern on FX.

Look, I don’t “get” Harry Styles, but who am I to yuck someone else’s yum? Get your fill of the former One Direction heartthrob when he helms NBC’s Saturday Night Live as host and musical guest Saturday at 11:30 p.m. Eastern.

The new season of The Crown drops Sunday on Netflix, and we truly don’t deserve that much Olivia Colman. And Helena Bonham Carter? We aren’t worthy!

STUDENTS FROM 33 HBCUS GATHER IN DC FOR ANNUAL HRC FOUNDATION LEADERSHIP SUMMIT: Nearly 50 students from the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) convened at HRC headquarters over the weekend. HRC FOUNDATION AND THE UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT LAUNCH SURVEY TO EXAMINE HEALTH CARE EXPERIENCES OF BLACK AND LATINX YOUNG ADULTS: Respondents will be asked about their health care experiences, including their knowledge and experiences with PrEP, as well as their background and identity. HRC’s goal is to identify ways to better connect community members with tools such as PrEP, and with inclusive, competent providers. Read more from HRC.
