A UK survey has found that 18 to 24-year-olds are more likely than any other age group to hold negative views towards LGBTQ communities.

The survey of over 1,600 adults was analyzed by the British LGBTQ anti-violence charity, Galop. The results were revealed yesterday in its Hate Crime Report 2019.

The report carries some encouraging news, such as more than 4 in 5 people said that LGBT+ people should be free to live as they wish.

However, it also found that intolerance and anti-LGBTQ sentiment is far from uncommon. Although only one in 20 said LGBTQ people should not be free to live as they wish, one in five said they’d be uncomfortable with an LGB+ neighbor, and one in four uncomfortable with a trans neighbor.

Disturbingly, it found younger age groups showed a greater lack of acceptance towards gay, bi and trans folk.

One in five people said being LGBTQ was “immoral or against their beliefs.” This rose to one in four among 18- to 24-year-olds, higher than other age groups.

Ten percent of people said being LGBTQ could be “cured.” Again, this rose to 20% for under-25s, compared to 5% of those aged 55-65.

When asked if they believed LGBTQ people are “dangerous” to others, only 3% of the oldest age group agreed with the statement. This rose to 15% of those aged 25-34 and 16% of those aged under 25.

In their report, Galop’s authors speculate the intolerance shown by younger people, “perhaps reflects a combination of the influence of the rise of anti-LGBT+ rhetoric globally … It may also be connected to the influence of a growing number of siloed online communities of hate.”

It recommends more research into why some younger people have negative attitudes towards gay and trans folk, and greater work with social media companies to challenge, “toxic cultures of hate online.”

Nick Antjoule, Galop’s Head of Hate Crime Services said the findings offer, “a sobering reminder that progress achieved in recent decades can easily be reversed.

“Young people polled tended to hold more negative views toward LGBT+ people than other age groups. This alarming finding warns of a generational pivot ahead and a bumpy road for those of us committed to challenging anti-LGBT violence and abuse.”

The report arrived on the same day the UK’s Home Office published its latest hate crime statistics. Compared to last year’s figures, these showed a 10% increase in hate crimes toward people because of their sexuality, and a 37% increase in transphobic hate crimes.

Over the summer, one such incident made headlines around the world. A same-sex female couple were assaulted on a London bus after being ordered to kiss by a group of young men. Five teenagers were subsequently arrested in connection with the attack. One of the women, Melania Geymonat, posted about the incident to her Facebook.

Campaigners say Brexit and right-wing populism have contributed towards a rise in hate crime. Others say some of the increase can be attributed to more people feeling confident enough to report such crimes to the police.

Nik Noone, Galop’s Chief Executive said, “Recorded anti-LGBT+ hate crime has doubled in the last three years. This is reflected in the escalating scale, severity and complexity of hate crime cases we are supporting at Galop.

It was today reported that UK authorities will increase sentencing terms for those found guilty of anti-gay or anti-trans hate crimes. British judges will be instructed to sentence those found guilty of either to at least six months in jail.

Although Galop has published previous Hate Crime Reports, it has not included exactly the same data, so is unable to say whether these figures represent an increase or decrease in regards to acceptance. However, these UK findings around millennials are not isolated. In June, A GLAAD report in the US found that younger Americans feel increasingly ‘uncomfortable’ with the LGBTQ community.

GLAAD’s annual Accelerating Acceptance Index showed increasing acceptance across its first three surveys. However, the last two surveys have shown a reversal in acceptance among younger age groups: “the number of young Americans ages 18-34 who are comfortable across all seven scenarios [of LGBTQ acceptance] dropped from 53% to 45%, the second consecutive year that this age group has shown a drop.”

Bill O’Reilly Owned After Accusing Beto O’Rourke of Lying About Woman Working Four Jobs

Disgraced FOX News host Bill O’Reilly, fired in 2017 amid multiple sexual harassment lawsuits settled later for millions of dollars, was destroyed by Beto O’Rourke and other Twitter users on Tuesday night following the Democratic debate after accusing the former congressman of lying. At the debate, O’Rourke told a story about meeting a woman who was working four jobs and caring for a special needs child.

O’Reilly doubted the story, and made his views known, while live-tweeting the debate: “Beto says he met a woman working FOUR jobs. And raising a special needs child. I don’t believe him. Sorry.”

O’Rourke responded with a photo: “This is her. Her name is Gina. Her daughter’s name is Summer. The problem with our economy is she has to live in her car—while a disgraced TV host like you makes millions.”

Maybe you have an extra 32 million to help her out.

One Mag Vol 6 Issue 2

Magazine cover courtesy of ONE Archives Foundation

In honor of LGBTQ History Month, we’re taking a deep dive look-back at the first gay publication in America—ONE magazine. Launched in Los Angeles in 1953, ONE was published by One, Inc., which grew from The Mattachine Society, the seminal gay-rights group founded by Harry Hay. Its editorial founders were Martin Block, Don Slater, and Dale Jennings. Produced on a shoestring and sold for 25 cents, ONE began to change the course of history with an unapologetic exploration of homosexuality and the largely unexamined societal taboo against it.

This is the fifth in our series of ONE magazine cover stories.

Volume 6, Issue 2: The Gay Bar

While ONE addressed hefty issues like obscenity law and psychoanalysis, it just as often provided everyday social commentary on the realities of gay life in the 1950s. In this issue, Robert Gregory ponders the function of the “Gay Bar” in capital letters. Hard to tell how many Gay Bars existed in 1958, but Gregory paints a picture not unfamiliar to many of us:

The Gay Bar, while it by no means offers a total cross-section of the homosexual population of a city or country, nevertheless goes farther, at present, than any other single social institution at collecting together a wide variety of types and temperaments. Anyone who has “made the rounds,” as they say, is readily acquainted with the milieu—the hustlers, the screaming faggots, the queens, the nice ivy-leaguers—sometimes all in easy exchange with one another…

At a time when most major cities have an entire site dedicated exclusively to gay social institutions, it’s hard to imagine the role the gay bar played in the late ’50s. You could hook up there, sure, but the allure was more fundamental than that:

Among homosexuals the feeling of isolation is exceptionally prevalent and often cruel. Empathy, the feeling of spontaneous rapport and understanding with other fellow human beings, is often smothered under personal doubts and misgivings, under mistrust of others, and under insecurity in most personal relations. “What would they think if they knew?” Thus the Gay Bar is exceptionally important to many homosexuals, as the one institution where they can be sure of finding some measure of kinship with others.

Of course, at the same time, there was danger. Gay bars were a target since sex between men was still illegal in every state. Eleven years later the gay liberation movement would be born at a gay bar in New York City.

One is not surprised or dismayed when police swagger in, usually in pairs, glower menacingly at everybody, hurry back to the men’s room to see if anything is going on, glower once more at everybody on their return trip, and swagger out again.

If a cop swaggers into a gay bar now, chances are he’s there to drink, dance and, with any luck, hookup.

How nice finally to be able to enjoy our men in uniform.

NYC Gay Man Brutally Attacked After Allegedly Refusing to Perform Oral Sex on Stranger

NYC Gay Man Brutally Attacked After Allegedly Refusing to Perform Oral Sex on Stranger

37th Avenue and 77th Street in Jackson Heights, near where a gay man says he was attacked after refusing a sexual proposition.

A gay man in the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens was beaten robbed, and dragged on the ground after allegedly refusing to perform oral sex on a stranger early Sunday morning.

Gay City News reports: that the victim, Carlos, was walking home from a friend’s house when the man approached him, flashed and propositioned him, and, when refused, attacked him: “The assailant persisted and only became more aggressive, Carlos explained. He continued to press Carlos to perform oral sex on him, even as he tried escaping. Finally, the man told him, ‘I’ve got you locked now.’ Carlos said his refusal to acquiesce to the man’s sexual demands angered the assailant even more. The man hit him multiple times — including on his head — and stole his cell phone and backpack, Carlos explained. The man allegedly demanded to know the password to unlock the cell phone.”

Carlos sought assistance from a passing motorist, but was knocked to the ground and then beaten and dragged by his assailant, who told the motorist that he was the one being robbed.

Carlos escaped and found a police van according to the report. The NYPD then tracked down the assailant using the “Find My iPhone” feature, and the attacker, identified as 26-year-old Jelani Stewart of the Bronx, was arrested and charged with public lewdness and robbery.

Said Carlos to Gay City News: “I’m injured right now, but I have to come to work. Other than that, I would have been in the hospital. I have back pain, stomach pain… my nose, my eyes, my ears, my head. I took some pain medication. .. I really want to see this person in jail.”
