Compelling new study offers yet another reason to delete your Grindr account

Compelling new study offers yet another reason to delete your Grindr account

A new study out of the University of Waterloo offers yet another reason to delete Grindr from your phone.

According to researchers, the popular hookup app is giving men severe body image issues, especially when it comes to how they feel about their weight.

13 Grindr users from various cities around the Greater Toronto Area talked to researchers about how the app has negatively impacted the images they have of themselves.

“We were surprised to find that weight stigma is perpetuated by individual users and embedded within the app’s information architecture,” says Eric Filice, a public health doctoral candidate and lead author of the study.

The study reports:

For example, because Grindr facilitates anonymity more than other apps (it doesn’t require a name or link to other social media platforms), and because its pre-set body descriptions don’t acknowledge being overweight (you can be ‘toned,’ ‘average,’ ‘large,’ ‘muscular,’ ‘slim’ or ‘stocky’), most participants in the study perceived being overweight as a stigma.

“Participants recalled their body weight or shape being scrutinized for allegedly being incompatible with their gender expression or preferred position during intercourse,” explains Filice.

Researchers found user’s dissatisfaction with their own bodies was the result of the app’s emphasis on sexual objectification and appearance comparisons.

“It doesn’t help that because Grindr exists to connect users for dating or sex, physical appearance bears greater cultural salience,” Filice says.

“People often compare their candid, in-person appearance to the meticulously curated or digitally altered appearances of others they encounter online.”

So what’s the solution? Aside from deleting one’s account, that is. Since, as researchers note, many gay men “see Grindr as a necessary evil, as internet-mediated communication has served a unique historical role for gay men in circumventing social, cultural and legal barriers to making connections in public spaces.”

“Health promotion strategists should focus on patterns in app use that are most harmful and orient their interventions accordingly,” Filice concludes.

He ads, “Much remains to be done. We still have little insight into how dating apps influence the bodily perceptions of trans and gender-nonconforming folks.”

RICHARD PFEIFFER. Chicago gay rights pioneer dies: ‘Parade coordinator Richard Pfeiffer, who died of cancer Sunday, according to GoPride.com, was at the helm in the 1980s, when marchers called attention to the AIDS crisis, and in the 2010s, when they demanded marriage equality. He handled hot-button issues such as corporate sponsorship and shepherded the parade, which now attracts an estimated 1 million people, through a period of explosive growth.’

ALL THE PRESIDENT’S WOMEN. New book asserts Trump sexually assaulted 26 additional women: ‘If you thought the Access Hollywood tape was the opening salvo in the story of Donald Trump’s transgressions against women, think again. In All the President’s Women: Donald Trump and the Making of a Predator, journalists Barry Levine and Monique El-Faizy draw on over 100 interviews, many of them exclusive, to craft a detailed history of Trump’s relationships with women, stretching back to his childhood and education as well as his rise through real estate, entertainment, and politics. What emerges from the authors’ reporting is a portrait of a predator who hides behind wealth and institutional power to frequently harass and abuse women.’

GREEN LIGHT. Turkey begins offensive in Syria as U.S. stands aside: ‘President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the start of the operation, code-named “Peace Spring”, on Twitter and said it would also target Islamic State. A small forward group of Turkish forces first entered Syria early Wednesday at two points along the frontier, close to the Syrian towns of Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ayn, according to a Turkish official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.’

Others cite Rudy’s marriage in 2003 to Judith Nathan, his soon-to-be third ex-wife, as transformational. Rudy was a pizza and Diet Coke guy when I met him in 1992. But he became an Upper East Side and Hamptons socialite and, worse yet, a Palm Beach neighbor of Donald Trump.’

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and Sen. Jacky Rosen to Join HRC for Las Vegas Pride Parade.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and Sen. Jacky Rosen to Join HRC for Las Vegas Pride Parade.

HRC announced that Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen will join HRC’s contingent of marchers, led by the Las Vegas Steering Committee, in the Las Vegas Pride Parade on Friday, October 11. The Steering Committee has been working in the community to help elect and support fair-minded political leaders, such as Gov. Sisolak and Sen. Rosen. This will be the first time that a sitting governor of Nevada will participate in the Las Vegas Pride Parade.

“We’re proud to have Gov. Sisolak, First Lady Kathy Sisolak and Sen. Jacky Rosen joining HRC in the parade on Friday,” said HRC Nevada State Director Briana Escamilla. “We’re looking forward to making history with Gov. Sisolak as he becomes the first sitting Governor of Nevada to take part in this Pride Parade. The Governor has a long history of supporting LGBTQ equality, including supporting marriage equality and non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ Nevadans in all aspects of life, and we’re proud to continue to work with him to help advance equality in Nevada. HRC is also proud to be working with Sen. Rosen to continue advancing pro-equality measures for all LGBTQ Americans.”

“I’m thrilled to join the Human Rights Campaign and Sen. Jacky Rosen in Friday’s Las Vegas Pride Parade,” said Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak. “As Governor, I’ve fought for the protections that our LGBTQ community deserves, and I’ll continue to work alongside our partners to build on the progress that we made this year. However, we can’t do it alone — we need your support. I’d like to welcome everyone in the community who supports equal rights for LGBTQ Nevadans to sign up to join the parade on Friday. If we use our voices together, we will continue to make positive change in our community.”

“I’m thrilled to join Gov. Sisolak, First Lady Kathy Sisolak and the Human Rights Campaign for this year’s Las Vegas Pride Parade,” said Senator Jacky Rosen. “I remain committed to standing up for LGBTQ rights in the Senate, and I will continue to work towards ensuring full equality for the LGBTQ community. Despite the progress we’ve made, members of the LGBTQ community are still not fully protected by our country’s current anti-discrimination laws. That is why I proudly supported the Equality Act in the House and am supporting this legislation in the Senate. As we come together in celebration of Pride, let’s reflect on the work that lies ahead in order to create more open, loving and tolerant communities for all.”

This legislative session, Nevada passed a sweeping set of pro-equality bills supporting the LGBTQ community. Landmark bills that were passed include: SB97, a ban on LGBTQ panic defenses; SB284, which established an HIV modernization task force in the state; SB311, which expands credit non-discrimination protections to LGBTQ people; and SB204, which requires schools to adopt a policy for the prevention of suicide, and to specifically address LGBTQ youth; all of which were signed into law by Gov. Sisolak. Sen. Rosen, an original co-sponsor of the Equality Act, has been an outspoken critic of the Trump-Pence Administration’s assault on LGBTQ equality and continues to support LGBTQ people as a Senator.

Friday is also National Coming Out Day, a day to celebrate coming out as a member of the LGBTQ community. Every year on October 11, which falls during LGBTQ History Month, NCOD emphasizes the importance of coming out and creating a safe world in which LGBTQ people can live openly as their authentic selves.
