Sources imply ‘SNL’ knew about Shane Gillis’s bigotry and hired him anyway

The plot has thickened in the ongoing Shane Gillis/SNL drama…

Last week, SNL announced Gillis would be joining the cast of its 45th season. Then footage of him making inflammatory remarks about several different minority groups surfaced online. An outrage ensued and yesterday, SNL announced Gillis wouldn’t be joining the cast, after all.

“After talking with Shane Gillis, we have decided that he will not be joining SNL,” the NBC show said in a statement. “We want SNL to have a variety of voices and points of view within the show, and we hired Shane on the strength of his talent as a comedian and his impressive audition for SNL.”

The statement continued: “We were not aware of his prior remarks that have surfaced over the past few days. The language he used is offensive, hurtful and unacceptable. We are sorry that we did not see these clips earlier, and that our vetting process was not up to our standard.”

Now, several outlets are reporting that SNL initially hired Gillis to woo conservative audiences, implying that producers might not have been as blissfully ignorant as they initially claimed.

Variety reports:

According to sources, the long-running NBC comedy show and series mastermind Lorne Michaels were actively looking to cast a comedian for its new season who would appeal to more conservative viewers. This was meant to counteract the appearance of a liberal bias on the show, given that it has seen a major resurgence in popularity in recent years with Alec Baldwin regularly portraying President Donald Trump while other cast members and guest stars have played members of his administration and those in his orbit.

If this is true, then to appeal to conservative audiences, SNL felt it needed to add an unremarkable straight white guy to the cast of its 45th season. Huh.

According to sources, Gillis was “well-known” in the comedy world for using racist, homophobic, and misogynistic language prior to being hired by SNL, throwing into question producers’ claims that they were “not aware of his prior remarks.”

In addition to calling Chinese people “f*cking ch*nks” and women “flat-chested b*tches,” Gillis has frequently used the word “f*ggot” in his standup routine and once joked about “hot Southern boys” being raped during the Civil War, comparing it to “having gay sex in jail.”

SNL has not issued any additional comment over the Shane Gillis controversy. Meanwhile, Gillis responded to his firing by saying he thinks it’s “ridiculous” he even has to say anything regarding his history of racism and homophobia in his comedy routine and adding that he always preferred MadTV over SNL anyway.

“I’m a comedian who was funny enough to get on SNL,” he quipped. “That can’t be taken away.”

Except that it was.

Aaron Carter’s family files restraining order against him over “alarming behavior”

Nick Carter filed a restraining order against his kid brother Aaron Carter this week, claiming the singer has been exhibiting “increasingly alarming behavior” and threatened to kill his “pregnant wife and unborn child.”

Yesterday, the 39-year-old Backstreet Boy tweeted: “After careful consideration, my sister Angel and I regret that we were required to seek a restraining order against our brother Aaron today.”

Nick included the hashtags #mentalhealth, #guncontrolnow and #guncontrol in his tweet.

Aaron has been tabloid fodder since 2017 when he came out as bisexual in the lead up to his album release, going so far as to perform at gay clubs where he pointed to guys who he thought were cute in the audience.

After the album was released, however, he walked everything back, saying that, actually, on second thought, he isn’t bisexual after all, he’s only into chicks.

Around that same time, he also went on TV to have his HIV test results revealed before a live studio audience. After the test came back negative, he said, “That was the scariest thing I have ever done in my life.”

Last November, he announced on social media that his girlfriend, artist/Instagrammer Lina Valentina, was pregnant with his child. Like the time he came out as bisexual, this also proved to be a lie.

And in April of this year, he told TMZ that Michael Jackson may have molested him after all, even though he fervently denied Jackson ever harmed him in the past.

Aaron responded to Nick’s restraining order this week by unleashing a string of furious tweets, including one that claims he once loaned Nick $100,000 and “this is the thank you.”

In another, he accuses his brother of using the court system to intimidate him, tweeting: “Restraining order says stay 100 feet away. It’s been thousands of miles for years. Using the court system to shake me down. Worked on some girls but won’t work on me. Good night all.”

And in another, he tells Nick they are “done for life.”

Meanwhile, over on Instagram, Aaron posted a video of himself singing an a cappella rendition N’Sync’s hit “Bye Bye Bye” while wearing an N’Sync tshirt, along with the caption: “Is that an @nsync shirt?Bye bye bye to all you rude foul muthaf*ckin BSB fans! I ain’t the one.” The caption also included a middle finger emoji.
