WATCH: These burly NFL players bared it all for ESPN and nobody is complaining

It’s ESPN Body Issue season, that special time of year when the sports media property trickles out its annual ode to the athletic form.

And this year they’re kicking things off in the thicc-est of ways — a feature on the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line.

“There’s a whole stigma behind the O-line body, but as you can see, some of these guys are pretty well-built, strong guys,” Lane Johnson, one of the players featured, told ESPN. “I just wanted to put that out there and see how it settles.”

Fans are freaking out over NFL star Drew Brees partnering with antigay hate group

Fans are freaking out over NFL star Drew Brees partnering with antigay hate group

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been laying low since being exposed as a bigot earlier this week. Meanwhile, his fans are in a collective panic.

It all started when Brees appeared in a video for the antigay hate group Focus on the Family to promote “Bring Your Bible to School Day.”

“I want to encourage you to live out your faith on Bring Your Bible To School Day and share God’s love with friends,” he says in the video, which began making the rounds on social media last weekend.

Posted by Focus on the Family on Thursday, August 29, 2019

Shortly after that, it was revealed Brees has working with the organization since 2010 and was even profiled on the hate group’s official blog in 2015.

Focus on the Family opposes same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples. It also supports gay conversion therapy and religious freedom laws, believes trans people are deranged, says anti-bullying groups promote homosexuality, and has lobbied for legislation allowing antigay workplace discrimination.

Adding a layer of awkwardness to the whole situation, Brees is a longtime friend of Ellen Degeneres and once filmed an anti-bullying PSA for her in 2010. He also appeared in an It Gets Better video.

The responses from football fans have been all over the place.

Many people are outraged by the whole thing…

Drew Brees a white man from Austin Texas who wear Wranglers and y’all shocked he don’t like LGBT people

— Young Bakugo ? ? (@feedmeok) September 3, 2019

I can’t believe that y’all are surprised out Drew Brees being attached to a religious extremist group. Have you not been paying attention? Dude has been problematic. Throwing TDs doesn’t make you a good person. Even doing some good things doesn’t make you a good person.

— David M. Grubb (@DMGrubb) September 3, 2019

Several outlets reach out to @drewbrees to ask why he would do a PSA for a known racist discriminatory religious cult. He hasn’t replied. Mainstream media ignored it, but had lot to say about Chappelle jokes, but I digress t.co/gywLbmicRb

— Robert Littal (@BSO) September 4, 2019

Turns out, @drewbrees has his own profile on their website and has even done a previous interview with them.

Drew Brees, why are you supporting and have been supporting anti-LGBT organizations? pic.twitter.com/SCOq42d5dQ

— Norman F-cking Rougarou! (@CaleGuidry) September 2, 2019

Drew Brees actually sells a supplement for AdvoCare that can make you ungay.

— Dexter’s Library (@Dexters_Library) September 3, 2019

Drew Brees partners with wildly homophobic and anti-choice organization. Im sure the “stick to sports” crowd just missed it though. pic.twitter.com/U19NdfzF3V

— meg fenway (@megfenway) September 3, 2019

Others seem to be in denial about it…

I really hope Drew Brees wasn’t knowingly promoting an anti-LGBT group. He is a hero to so many and I never would have thought he was a bigoted man #SaintsDontHate #IsitTrueDrew

— SwankBones (@Swank_Bones) September 3, 2019

The Drew Brees commercial makes me so sad. Not sure how to deal with this.

— Seth Galina (@SethGalina) September 5, 2019

Unpopular opinion. Athletes aren’t under obligation to be hyper socially aware. Drew Brees likely knows nothing about Focus on the Family other than they’re a Christian group. all he endorsed the video encouraging kids to carry bibles. This is on his publicist.Don’t come for Drew

— Paul Givens (@PaulGivens13) September 3, 2019

@drewbrees Please tell me you don’t support an anti-USA company that doesn’t believe in equal rights for all Americans? ?t.co/52PbOoq5aD

— Lovebacon33 (@Lovebacon33) September 5, 2019

I want to pretend I don’t know this while simultaneously never forgetting it. Unfortunately it’s not the first red flag that he isn’t as wholesome and great as most would like to believe. Great QB? Yes. Great guy? Not so sure.

— Rayna (@MomsNotAll) September 2, 2019

And then there are those who are standing by their golden boy no matter what…

I never cared much for Drew Brees until now. This shows he is willing to take a stand for what he believes. It makes no difference what man calls him. God’s view of him is the only lasting thing that matters. Thumbs up to Drew Brees.

— Hoyle Dabbs (@HoyleWDabbs) September 3, 2019

@drewbrees @drewbrees when is Americans going stand up against the attacking of christen faith #standstrong #bringyourbible to school day

— LDillon (@Bullseydfw) September 5, 2019

The Drew Brees news makes me like him even more

— Andrew Wildt (@WildtAndrew) September 5, 2019

So they want to cancel Drew Brees because he recorded a video produced by Focus on the Family? Are these petty simple people serious?

— Laveda Glover (@AlligatorPurse) September 5, 2019

I Am Atheist AF – & I support #DrewBrees ? % #StandForWhatYouBelieve you people are so Hate Filled yourselves it’s unreal, oh if it’s all pro-gay it’s OKAY -But people who decide to live the tradition Christian Life – People bash them, WHY? Oh yes because It’s Not Your Way eh ??

— Puppet Master (@YupItsMe00) September 5, 2019

Remember @drewbrees the voices shouting at you are a small, loud and disproportionately influential minority.

You are supported by millions of people who genuinely appreciate your strength, faith and courage.

— Chad Felix Greene (@chadfelixg) September 5, 2019

Neither Brees nor the New Orleans Saints have issued any comment in response to the controversy.

Meanwhile, in other news, Colin Kaepernick is still blacklisted from the NFL.

Actor Isaiah Washington, who was fired from Grey’s Anatomy in 2007 after calling co-star T.R. Knight a “faggot” on set, says he’s leaving the Democratic Party after getting support from Donald Trump for the First Step Act, “a bill which would reduce a prisoner’s sentence for good behavior and assist them to assimilate with society upon their release,” Newsweek reports.

Newsweek adds: ‘Washington explained why he supports the #WalkAway movement, an online campaign encouraging people who feel left behind by the Democratic party to seek other alternatives, like the Republican party. Washington says Democrats are “not doing enough” for the black community.’

Killer clowns, closeted kids and cross dressing writers: What to Watch Toronto Film Fest edition

Killer clowns, closeted kids and cross dressing writers: What to Watch Toronto Film Fest edition

IT: Chapter Two

Stepping out on a movie date this weekend? Netflix and chillin? Whatever your entertainment needs, we got your back (and hopefully your mind) with Queerty’s weekly “Culture Club” column with some of the highlights of new releases, streaming shows, classics worth revisiting, and what to drink while you watch.

This week, as we travel to cover the queerness of the Toronto International Film Festival, check out a few of our favorite overlooked titles from last year’s festival. Enjoy!

The Step-Out Screamer: IT Chapter 2

The much-anticipated conclusion to the Stephen King adaptation from 2017 finally hits theatres, and we’re happy to say, this time the queerness arrives intact. IT needlessly omitted themes of homophobia which play a key role in King’s original from the film version. We have it on good authority that a gay bashing, which sets off the return of Pennywise in the book, also features an important role in the new movie. That, coupled with a terrific cast that includes Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy and Bill Hader, is enough reason to give Chapter 2 a look.

In theatres September 6.

The Costume Drama: Colette

We profiled this neglected costume drama about the noted bisexual author last year when it played at the Toronto International Film Festival. Keira Knightly shines in the title role, bringing a mix of intelligence, beauty and elegance to the film as only she can. Transgender activist Jake Graf has a brief but memorable role as a cis character, though the film’s standout is Denise Gough as  Mathilde de Morny, Colette’s sometime lover who was probably transgender. The movie revels in the fluidity of sexuality and gender, just like its subject which, in our estimation, means its worth a look.

Streams on Amazon, YouTube & Vudu.

The Overlooked: Giant Little Ones

Director Keith Behrman’s family drama also had a premiere at TIFF last year, though the film didn’t quite get the attention it deserved. We hope to rectify that problem now. Giant Little Ones stars Josh Wiggins as Frankie, a popular high school student dealing with his father (Kyle McLaughlan) coming out of the closet. As his parents’ marriage dissolves, Frankie has an encounter with his best friend Ballas (Darren Mann), which starts the rumor that Frankie might be gay. But there’s more to this story than it might first seem. Giant Little Ones has a few twists up its sleeve, and features enough fine performances to keep audiences interested.

Streams on Amazon & YouTube.

The Wicked: JT LeRoy

Out director Justin Kelley continues the exploration of identity he began in films like King Cobra and I am Michael with this bonkers true story. In the late 90s, wannabe rock star Laura Albert (played by Laura Dern) rocks the literary establishment by posing as a bisexual, HIV+, androgynous male author named JT. When her books become unexpected hits, Laura enlists her sister-in-law Savannah (Kristen Stewart) to pose as JT in real life. What starts as a fluke becomes an elaborate and dangerous hoax, especially when a Hollywood starlet (Diane Kruger) falls for Savannah-as-JT, and Savannah shares in the passion. JT LeRoy got criminally overlooked at TIFF 2018, and earlier this year when it landed a wide release. A story this bizarre had to be true. A movie this fun deserves to be seen.

Streams on Amazon, YouTube & Vudu.

The Quickie: I Promised Her Life

Robert Nazar Arjoyan announces himself as an ambitious filmmaker with this short film about an Armenian-American mother grieving for the loss of her lesbian daughter. Though I Promised Her Life uses the dead daughter’s sexuality as a plot device, it does focus on part of the queer experience that other films overlook: the struggle of straight friends and family to sometimes understand LGBTQ life, and how parent-relationships often go beyond simple love or hate, into feelings far more complex.

Streams on Vimeo September 9.

The Sip: The Pennywise

Much like its namesake character, this Tequila infused shot packs one heck of a punch…enough so that you might just feel yourself float. Recommendation: don’t watch anything with clowns while partaking.

  • one part tequila
  • one part strawberry liquor

Mix well and serve as a shot.

Pete Buttigieg Shreds Trump Over Doctored Hurricane Map: ‘Humiliating, Embarrassing…It Makes You Feel a Kind of Pity for Everyone Involved’ — WATCH

Mayor Pete Buttigieg appeared on CNN’s New Day on Thursday and was asked what he thought about Donald Trump’s use of a doctored map to cover for an incorrect prediction he had made that the storm would hit Alabama.

“I feel sorry for the President,” Pete Buttigieg says on President Trump appearing to show an altered Hurricane Dorian trajectory map. “It makes you feel a kind of pity for everybody involved” t.co/jB9dijv8yU pic.twitter.com/ENma54ygE9

— CNN Politics (@CNNPolitics) September 5, 2019

Said Buttigieg: “I’m really worried about… I feel sorry for the president, and that is not the way we should feel about the most powerful figure in this country. Somebody on whose wisdom and judgment our lives literally depend. … No matter how you cut it, this is an unbelievably sad state of affairs for our country. … This is humiliating. This is an embarrassing moment for our country. And we seem to see a new national embarrassment every day. … When the presidency has been reduced to this, all of us are diminished. … What we’re seeing there is literally pathetic. It makes you feel a kind of pity for everybody involved.”

CNN WILL BE EXCLUSIVE BROADCAST PARTNER OF HRC FOUNDATION’S HISTORIC 2020 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES TOWN HALL ON OCT. 10: The evening, expected to draw the largest-ever audience for a Democratic presidential town hall devoted to LGBTQ issues, will mark the first time in history that a major cable news network will air a presidential event devoted to issues of importance to the LGBTQ community. The town hall will take place on Thursday, October 10 at The Novo in Los Angeles. Said HRC President Alphonso David (@AlphonsoDavid): “We are eager to hear from this field of Democratic presidential candidates about how they plan to win full federal equality, defend the fundamental equality of LGBTQ people, and protect the most vulnerable among us — both here in the United States and around the globe — from stigma, institutional inequality, discrimination and violence.” More from HRC, CNN and Politico.

THROWBACK THURSDAY — A LOOK BACK AT HRC’S PREVIOUS PRESIDENTIAL TOWN HALLS: The HRC Foundation hosted presidential town halls in 2004 and 2008. At the 2008 event, co-sponsored by Logo and hosted by Melissa Etheridge, the main topics were marriage equality, ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ and… whether being gay is a choice. My, how times have changed. But what hasn’t changed is the need for a leader on LGBTQ equality in the White House:

  • Today, in 30 states, LGBTQ people remain at risk of being fired, evicted or denied services because of who we are, and 35 states have yet to ban the dangerous and debunked practice of “conversion therapy.”
  • Hate crimes are rising, and more than 100 transgender people — most of them transgender women of color — have been killed in the U.S. in the last five years.
  • The Trump-Pence Administration is directly attacking our community by banning transgender troops from serving our country openly, undermining health care services for people living with HIV and seeking to erase LGBTQ people from protections under law.

HRC MOURNS BAILEY REEVES, 17-YEAR-OLD TRANS WOMAN KILLED IN BALTIMORE OVER LABOR DAY WEEKEND: Local police are looking for more details, and have not identified a suspect or motive. HRC will be monitoring this story as we mourn Reeves alongside her friends and community. More from Washington Blade.

REP. JENNIFER WEXTON (D-VA) INTRODUCES BILL TO BLOCK HUD RULE ALLOWING ANTI-TRANSGENDER DISCRIMINATION IN SHELTERS: Said HRC Associate Legal Director Robin Maril at a July hearing on the HUD rule: “No one should be turned away from shelter or required to sacrifice their safety to get the services they need, especially when those services are funded by the U.S. taxpayer.” More from ThinkProgress.

MORNING MUST READ — COLUMBUS DISPATCH ON WHY OHIO MUST PASS THE FAIRNESS ACT TO PROTECT LGBTQ PEOPLE: “Ohio politicians of all stripes have a chance to take a stand against bigotry by supporting Senate Bill 11, the ‘Ohio Fairness Act,’ which would add sexual [orientation] and gender identity to the classes protected in the state’s anti-discrimination law,” writes the editorial board. “Passing it would make Ohio one of the majority of states that provide explicit protection.” Read the full piece from The Columbus Dispatch.

ICYMI — MISSISSIPPI WEDDING VENUE OWNER REFUSES SERVICE TO COUPLE — SAYING THEY WON’T ALLOW INTERRACIAL OR SAME-SEX WEDDINGS: “Religion should never be exploited as a license to discriminate,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “This incident is yet another glaring example of how white supremacy and anti-LGBTQ bigotry are not merely things of the past. We must take action against these blatantly illegal practices.” More from The New York Times.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS DIRECTS CORONER TO BEGIN COLLECTING DATA ON SEXUAL ORIENTATION AND GENDER IDENTITY: This information will assist in determining rates of causes of death among members of the LGBTQ community. More from the Los Angeles Times.

DATA SHOWS THAT BLOCKING LGBTQ KEYWORDS CAUSES BRANDS TO MISS BIG OPPORTUNITIES FOR ENGAGEMENT: Gum Gum CEO Phil Schraeder writes in AdAge that during the recent U.S. Women’s World Cup, keyword blocking to avoid terms like ‘gay,’ ‘lesbian,’ ‘queer’ or ‘LGBTQ,’ caused brands to miss “swarms of enthusiastic eyeballs with viral headlines and highly-clicked content including positive LGBTQ language.” More from AdAge.
