Newly out NFL player Ryan Russell posts love poem to boyfriend and… wow
Put your hand up if you’d like a hunky, sensitive NFL level playing boyfriend; A man who’s so smitten with you that he feels compelled to come out; Who then takes to social media to post love poems about growing old with you?
Yes, we’re officially feeling a little envious. Last week, NFL free agent Ryan Russell, 27, came out as bisexual.
Related: “Ryan Russell might be the first out bisexual man to play in the NFL”
He wrote a candid essay for ESPN about being a bi male athlete.
At the same time, he introduced the world to his boyfriend, Los Angeles-based dancer Corey O’Brien. The two have just launched their own YouTube channel. Russell describes himself on it as a football player and writer.
Russell has received a flood of supportive messages since his ESPN essay. And now he’s out, he’s clearly not going to keep quiet about his feelings for O’Brien.
Yesterday he took to Instagram to post what’s clearly a love poem to his man.
I need to write more when I’m in love.
I need to stop holding your hand on these long Malibu walks
And write more.
I need to stop staring deeply into your eyes across the dinner table
And write more.
I need to stop watching you dance through the night
And write more.
I need to take a longer break between kisses,
Pull out my journal
And write more.
I need to stop thinking about how I’m going to make you mine.
And write more.
I need to stop planning our future together
And write more.
I need to stop imagining you holding our son
And write more.
I need to stop smiling at the thought of us
Old and gray, hand in hand,
And write more.

He tagged O’Brien at the end of the post. How sweet is that?
Whether you’re a fan of such public displays of affection or not, we hope other closeted athletes are watching and taking note – as well as all those sports-loving kids who look up to them.

Russell was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2015, and then played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016 and 2017. He was signed by the Buffalo Bills in 2018 but his season was cut short by surgery.
He’s currently a free agent and looking to get signed by a new team, writing in ESPN, “Today, I have two goals: returning to the NFL, and living my life openly. I want to live my dream of playing the game I’ve worked my whole life to play, and being open about the person I’ve always been.”
Here’s hoping he’s back on the field soon. And that we get to see plenty more of him and O’Brien.
Conversion Therapy Proponent Disavows ‘Ex-Gay’ Movement He Pushed for 20 Years: WATCH
McKrae Game, once called the leading voice in the “ex-gay” conversion therapy movement as the leader of the group Hope For Wholeness, came out as gay in June and is now disavowing his former organization in an attempt to help fix the damage that it caused, telling the Post and Courier that “conversion therapy is not just a lie, but it’s very harmful – because it’s false advertising.”
Said Game: “[Conversion therapy is] a lie and we have harmed generations of people. We’ve done wrong. We need to admit our wrongs and do what we can do to stop the wrong from continuing to happen.”
Wrote Game in a recent Facebook post: “At one time I was working with so many youth that I had a weekly youth group, where they’d share why they were there, and I would guide them in how to not be gay. What a sad commentary of my past verses today, or a bad joke as many may see it. I believe all of these young men are now out/gay and one that I worked with for many years is married to a man and living in San Francisco. I hope to catch up with him. I believe I’ll message him today. Hopefully he’ll not be too angry with me. When the reporter asked me if I’d like to see Hope for Wholeness shut down, I said I’d like all exgay ministry and conversion therapy counselors and organizations shut down. I told him I believed the only positive and productive use for HFW and exgay ministry is for those that believe that homosexuality is incongruent with their faith, to receive and have a community of like minded people so that they can live healthy lives, and in the end that was what I was trying to do. Today, I’m thankful to have it all behind me.”

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez destroys ‘straight pride’ in one tweet
Boston’s so-called “straight pride” has come and gone, drawing a crowd of around 200 and featuring such catchy sign slogans as “Make Normalcy Normal Again” and “Straight Lives Matter.”
Largely absent from the group, however, was a fairly large demographic of straight people: women.
To that point, US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had an astute observation.
“For men who are allegedly so ‘proud’ of being straight,” she wrote on Twitter, “they seem to show real incompetence at attracting women to their event.”
“Seems more like a ‘I-Struggle-With-Masculinity’ parade to me.”
She added:
“Hope they grow enough over the next year to support / join LGBTQ fam next Pride!”
We won’t hold our breath on that.
Her tweet struck a chord. It was shared over 26K times and liked by 150K+:

This isn’t the first pithy dig Ocasio-Cortez has fired off at the eye-roll inducing event.
When it was announced in June, she pondered an even more absurd scenario than “straight pride” itself, asking:
“Will ‘Straight Pride’ be a Freaky Friday type situation where all of our history books, movies, stories, media, news, etc feature mostly LGBTQ+ people & perspectives? Will people have to come out as straight?”
Will “Straight Pride” be a Freaky Friday type situation where all of our history books, movies, stories, media, news, etc feature mostly LGBTQ+ people & perspectives?
Will people have to come out as straight?
What would folks march in? Socks w/ sandals on? Dad jeans? t.co/7SUiWHWRMd

Of course, nobody can beat this woman’s viral response to straight pride. She still wins in our book.
Wedding Venue Owner Apologizes After Going Viral for Rejecting Gay and Interracial Couples Over ‘Christian Belief’ — WATCH
A Mississippi wedding venue apologized over the weekend after a video of its manager rejecting gay and interracial couples went viral on social media. The venue later took down its Facebook page.
In the video, viewed more than two million times in social media, the Boone’s Camp Event Hall manager tells LaKambria S. Welch that her brother and his fiancee, who had reserved the venue for their wedding, were no longer welcome.
Said the woman: “First of all, we don’t do gay weddings or mixed race … because of our Christian race, I mean, our Christian belief.”
When asked what in the Bible led to her decision, the woman replied, “I don’t want to argue my faith.”
Deep South Voice reported: ‘Welch says she believes the venue found out her brother and his fiancée, whose names she has not provided to DSV, through Facebook. “The owner took a look at my brother’s fiancée’s page and wrote her back to say they won’t be able to get married there because of her beliefs,” Welch told DSV. “He told my mom and she contacted the owner through messenger to only get a ‘seen’ with no reply. That’s when I took it upon myself to go get clarification on her beliefs.” The Mississippi Secretary of State’s website lists Donna and David Russell as the owner of Boone’s Camp Event Hall, LLC. Filings also show they own Boone’s Camp Mini Storage, LLC.’
A staff member at the venue, presumably the woman in the video, apologized in a now deleted post to Facebook, the Washington Post reports: ‘“To all of those offended, hurt or felt condemn by my statement I truly apologize to you for my ignorance in not knowing the truth about this,” the now-deleted apology read. “My intent was never of racism, but to stand firm on what I ‘assumed’ was right concerning marriage.”’
The City of Booneville distanced itself from the wedding venue in a post on Facebook, writing: “The City of Booneville, Mayor, and Board of Aldermen are aware of the comments recently made by a privately owned business located within the city of Booneville. The City of Booneville, Mayor, and Board of Aldermen do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, age, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status. Furthermore, the City of Booneville, Mayor, and Board of Aldermen do not condone or approve these types of discriminatory policies.”

MISSISSIPPI WEDDING VENUE OWNER REFUSES SERVICE TO COUPLE — SAYING THEY REFUSE TO DO INTERRACIAL OR SAME-SEX WEDDINGS: After being refused service by Boone’s Camp Event Hall, LaKambria Welch, a Black woman marrying a white man, uploaded a video of the interaction to Facebook. More from The Root.
The conduct in this video is illegal. A reminder that battles won long ago are being reignited. And when we have judges who are unwilling to affirm that Brown v Bd was correctly decided, these refusals of service & assaults on dignity must be met head on.
