Man ordered to pay fine for burning LGBTQ-themed books. “Paul Dorr, 63, of Ocheyedan, who runs the Christian group “Rescue The Perishing,” was fined $65 plus a 35 percent criminal penalty surcharge and court costs during his sentencing. The $65 fine is the minimum for his charge, a simple misdemeanor. Sioux County Attorney Thomas Kunstle, who represented the state of Iowa, requested Dorr be fined the maximum penalty of $625, a 35 percent surcharge and court costs for destroying the library’s property.”

Gebert, works as a foreign affairs officer assigned to the Bureau of Energy Resources, a State Department spokesperson told Hatewatch. Activists tell NCAA to look into school’s discrimination against LGBTQ students: ‘These advocates wrote last month to Mark Emmert, the NCAA president, imploring the NCAA to investigate the university’s policies on LGBTQ issues. Most of those who signed the letter are officers of Gamma Alpha Upsilon (which spells out “GAY” in Greek letters), an LGBTQ student group that has sought official recognition from the university for eight years. Formally known as the Sexuality Identity Forum, the organization has been continually denied formal recognition, though the university has never publicly explained why.’

Human Rights Campaign Honors the First-Ever Texas LGBTQ Caucus
Today, HRC celebrates the first-ever Texas LGBTQ Caucus, made up of members of the Texas House of Representatives. The caucus was started by five women in the House: State Rep. Mary González, Rep. Celia Israel, Rep. Jessica González, Rep. Julie Johnson and Rep. Erin Zwiener. Several of the members identify as openly LGBTQ. Last night at the National Conference for State Legislators in Nashville, the Human Rights campaign honored the members with a reception to celebrate their leadership and legislative success in 2019.
“HRC has been proud to partner with and work alongside the Texas LGBTQ Caucus, which was instrumental in defeating anti-LGBTQ legislation this legislative session,” said Rebecca Marques, Texas state director for the Human Rights Campaign. “This history-making session proved that when LGBTQ people are elected, they can make a difference on behalf of their constituents. We’re thrilled to have taken time to honor these leaders tonight, and look forward to our continued work together in making Texas a more equal place for all of us.”
Heading into the 2019 session, there were 23 anti-LGBTQ bills filed. With the leadership of the LGBTQ Caucus, the Texas legislative session concluded with only one anti-LGBTQ bill, SB 1978, being passed into law. SB 1978 was originally filed as a broad, sweeping anti-LGBTQ bill. However, after concerns raised by the LGBTQ Caucus, advocates and other organizations, significant changes were made to the bill.
