Equinox Owner Stephen Ross’s Company Blocks Access to Brand Subsidiary List Amid Trump Fundraiser Boycott Furor

The Related Companies blocked access to a list of its brand subsidiaries including Equinox and SoulCycle gyms, after news broke that owner and chairman Stephen Ross was hosting a Donald Trump fundraiser in the Hamptons on Friday.

After the news broke, calls for a boycott of the luxury gyms rang out, prompting a statement from the gyms about Ross’ involvement.

The gyms are far from the only properties owned by or attached to Related, which include Hard Rock Stadium, the &pizza chain, Bluestone Lane Coffee, the Momofuku restaurant chain, the Miami Dolphins, gyms Blink fitness and PURE Yoga, and the marketing firm RSE ventures. The company developed the Time Warner Center in New York City and the Hudson Yards, which is still under development.

But amid calls for a boycott, it doesn’t want you to see them and blocked access to its brand subsidiary page.

This information, of course, is available literally everywhere else, but nothing like stonewalling uselessly to repair and build future trust in your friendly corporate brand!

— Matthew Schneier (@MatthewSchneier) August 8, 2019

Ross released a statement of his own late on Wednesday: “While some prefer to sit outside of the process and criticize, I prefer to engage directly and support the things I deeply care about. I have known Donald Trump for 40 years, and while we agree on some issues, we strongly disagree on many others and I have never been bashful about expressing my opinions. I started my business with nothing and a reason for my engagement with our leaders is my deep concern for creating jobs and growing our country’s economy. I have been, and will continue to be, an outspoken champion of racial equality, inclusion, diversity, public education and environmental sustainability, and I have and will continue to support leaders on both sides of the aisle to address these challenges.”

HRC Mourns Pebbles LaDime “Dime” Doe, a Black Trans Woman Killed in South Carolina

HRC Mourns Pebbles LaDime “Dime” Doe, a Black Trans Woman Killed in South Carolina

HRC is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Pebbles LaDime “Dime” Doe, a 24-year-old Black transgender woman who was killed in Allendale County, South Carolina, on August 4.

Doe was found dead in a car parked in a driveway, according to reports. Further details about her death have not been released, but police are urging anyone with information to contact their local law enforcement.

Doe’s friends and family remembered her on social media as having a “bright personality” and being someone who “showed love” and who was “the best to be around.” Another friend wrote, “If I knew Friday was my last time seeing you, I would have hugged you even tighter.”

Tragically, Doe’s death is the 15th known case of deadly violence against the transgender community in 2019, and the second in South Carolina in the last few weeks alone. On July 20, Denali Berries Stuckey, also a Black transgender woman, was killed in North Charleston.

As occurs far too often in the reporting of anti-transgender violence, initial reports also misgendered and misnamed Doe in coverage of the crime, delaying HRC’s awareness of her death.

Anti-transgender stigma is exacerbated by callous or disrespectful treatment too often seen from media, law enforcement and our highest elected officials. In the pursuit of greater accuracy and respect, HRC offers guidelines for journalists and others who report on transgender people.

The Alliance For Full Acceptance, a social justice organization advocating on behalf of LGBTQ people in Charleston and South Carolina, and South Carolina Equality, a civil and human rights organization advocating for LGBTQ South Carolinians, have both released statements mourning Doe’s death. HRC joins both groups in sounding the alarm on violence targeting the transgender community, particularly Black transgender women.

In November, ahead of Transgender Day of Remembrance, HRC Foundation released “A National Epidemic: Fatal Anti-Transgender Violence in America in 2018,” a heartbreaking report honoring the trans people killed and detailing the contributing and motivating factors that lead to this tragic violence.

It is clear that fatal violence disproportionately affects transgender women of color, and that the intersections of racism, transphobia, sexism, biphobia and homophobia conspire to deprive them of necessities to live and thrive.

This epidemic of violence that disproportionately targets transgender people of color — particularly Black transgender women — must cease.

Gay Twitter responds to the Equinox Fitness/Trump fundraiser debacle

Gay Twitter responds to the Equinox Fitness/Trump fundraiser debacle

After news broke yesterday that Stephen Ross, the real estate developer who holds the majority stake in Equinox Fitness Clubs, is a major Trump supporter, a campaign encouraging Equinox members, and those of its subsidiaries like PURE Yoga, Blink Fitness and SoulCylce, to cancel their memberships went viral.

Ross, who has an estimated net worth of more than $7 billion, will be hosting a $250,000 per person fundraiser for Trump’s reelection campaign in Southhampton.

In response, Equinox rushed out a statement saying it has nothing to do with the fundraiser and claims no company profits will be used to pay for it. It also refers to Ross as a “passive investor” who isn’t involved in the day-to-day operations of the gym.

Elizabeth Warren: Trump is a White Supremacist

Elizabeth Warren responded clearly and directly when asked by the New York Times whether she believes Donald Trump is a white supremacist.

Said Warren: “Yes. He has given aid and comfort to white supremacists. He’s done the wink and a nod. He has talked about white supremacists as fine people. He’s done everything he can to stir up racial conflict and hatred in this country.”

Children Left Homeless, Crying in Streets After Massive ICE Raids of 680 Undocumented Immigrants Across Mississippi: WATCH

Children have been left abandoned and homeless, crying in the streets of cities across Mississippi after a massive raid by ICE.

The moral vandalism of this administration has no end—how is traumatizing these kids, abandoning them, making anyone any safer? t.co/4UorOvu27n

These ICE raids are designed to tear families apart, spread fear, and terrorize communities. These children went to daycare and are now returning home without their parents because Trump wants to play politics with their lives. pic.twitter.com/hOm5TkTqxL

— Kamala Harris (@KamalaHarris) August 8, 2019

WJTV reports: “Community leaders in Forest, Mississippi came together Wednesday night to put them up in a community gym. 12 News reporter Alex Love was granted permission to talk to community leaders and the children. These children — some as young as toddlers — were relying on neighbors and even strangers to pick them up outside their homes after school and drive them to a community center where people tried to keep them calm. But many kids could not stop crying for mom and dad.”

CNN reports: ‘US immigration authorities arrested about 680 undocumented immigrants at seven sites in six different cities in Mississippi on Wednesday. The raids are “believed to be the largest single-state immigration enforcement operation in our nation’s history,” said US Attorney for the Southern District of Mississippi Mike Hurst.’
