BARRED. Israel bars Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) from entering country, at Trump’s suggestion. “The decision has been made, the decision is not to allow them to enter,” Hotovely told Israel’s Reshet Radio.

It would show great weakness if Israel allowed Rep. Omar and Rep.Tlaib to visit. They hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds. Minnesota and Michigan will have a hard time putting them back in office. They are a disgrace!

Nicholas Sparks says he’s the real victim in homophobic email leak, still won’t address his racism

Nicholas Sparks says he’s the real victim in homophobic email leak, still won’t address his racism

Bestselling romance novelist Nicholas Sparks is currently being sued by Saul Benjamin, the former headmaster at the Epiphany School, a faith-based prep school founded by the author in 2006, for allegedly creating a hostile work environment. The trial kicked off earlier this week and, like Sparks’ paperbacks, it’s already proving to be quite melodramatic.

“I have been asked to tell the whole truth, not just part of the truth,” Sparks testified yesterday, before ripping into Benjamin by accusing him of “weaponizing” his private emails, specifically the ones where he disparaged LGBTQ people.

Earlier this summer, leaked emails showed that in 2013, Sparks ordered Benjamin to ban an LGBTQ student group and then threatened at least two teachers with termination for defending the students’ right to meet up after school. When Benjamin told Sparks that banning the group was discriminatory, the author replied: “Not allowing them to have a club is NOT discrimination.”

In another email, Sparks suggested banning all forms of student protest after two lesbian students planned to come out during chapel services. When Benjamin refused to do so, Sparks accused him of secretly authorizing an “official School LGBT club” which “some perceive as an agenda that strives to make homosexuality open and accepted.”

In another set of emails, which are just as offensive but have gotten far less attention, Sparks made racist comments about African Americans, claiming that the lack of any Black students at his school had less to do with racist school policies (or, in his words, “vestiges of Jim Crow”) and more to do with African-Americans being “too poor and can’t do the academic work.”

Benjamin eventually resigned as headmaster, saying he could no longer stand Sparks’ bigotry, and is now suing for roughly $600,000, the remaining balance of his contract.

During his testimony this week, Sparks said he resented his private emails being leaked, saying they portrayed him as a bigot and a homophobe when he insists he is anything but.

“Personally, I’m for gay marriage, gay adoption,” he said.

Shortly after the emails leaked, Sparks issued an apology on Facebook that read: “I regret and apologize that mine have potentially hurt young people and members of the LGBTQ community, including my friends and colleagues in that community.”

He went on to say that he is “an unequivocal supporter of gay marriage, gay adoption, and equal employment rights and would never want to discourage any young person or adult from embracing who they are.”

Sparks has yet to acknowledge the racist remarks he also made the emails, specifically his claims that about Black kids being too poor and too dumb to attend his school.

Equinox tries to fix its PR nightmare, but is it enough?

Equinox tries to fix its PR nightmare, but is it enough?

It’s safe to say Equinox is in full damage control mode.

In the wake of a PR disaster after investor Stephen Ross hosted a fundraiser for Donald Trump (and subsequently raised $12 million to reelect the president), Equinox chairman Harvey Spevak released a memo to gym members, and the national press following the story closely, touting a new initiative to donate $1 million to five charities.

Spevak addressed the controversy, writing:

“Many of you have asked for clarification on Stephen Ross’s investment in Equinox. Mr. Ross is not the majority investor in Equinox. He is one of the investors including myself. He does not run the company. I do. I am the Executive Chairman of Equinox and have led the vision and strategic direction of the company since I joined in 1999. Our focus has always been about building a community centered on our values, not politics.”

Celebrities and activists have called on members to drop ties with Equinox and sister gym SoulCycle, as well as a number of other interconnected lifestyle brands, over Ross’s involvement in politics.

For his part, Ross said in a statement to The Washington Post that he plans to counter Trump on policies he disagrees with. He called himself “an outspoken champion of racial equality, inclusion, diversity, public education and environmental sustainability.”

Of course, it’s hard to take him seriously as a champion of these causes when the Trump administration fails so miserably on each item.

Spevak’s memo went on to introduce a new charity initiative:

“While I don’t have all the answers, what we have heard from many of you is that you would like Equinox to immediately help amplify your voice in support of causes we as a community have always held close. As a next step, Equinox will make a $1 million donation to benefit the five charities mentioned above. From August 17 through August 31, every check-in will be an opportunity for our members and employees to select how our donation will be allocated among the causes.”

“We will continue to listen to your thoughts and ideas,” he concluded, “and while we have a lot of work to do, I am confident that together we will come out a stronger community.”

When the story first popped up in headlines last week, many criticized the company’s initial response as insufficient:

Will this new charity donation be enough to neutralize the negative brand association?

Billy Porter, Billy Eichner, Zack Bornstein, Chrissy Teigen, Jonathan Van Ness and Brittani Nichols are among Equinox’s high profile now-former members who have publicly supported the boycott.
