White House Responds to Taylor Swift’s Call to Pass Equality Act: It’s ‘Filled with Poison Pills’

The Trump administration responded on Tuesday after Taylor Swift noted that a petition at the end of her “You Need To Calm Down” video calling for passage of the Equality Act had reached enough signatures to warrant a response from the White House.

Said Swift upon accepting the “Video of the Year” award for “You Need To Calm Down”: “You voting for this video means that you want a world where we’re all treated equally under the law regardless who we love, regardless how we identify.”

Swift noted that at the end of the video there is a petition for people to call for passage of the “Equality Act,” legislation that would mandate equal protections for LGBTQ people under existing civil rights laws. Checking her watch, Swift said the petition now has half a million signatures “which is five times the amount that it would need to warrant a response from the White House.”

ICYMI: Gay White House Deputy Press Secretary Judd Deere Has a Lot to Say in Defense of His Boss Donald Trump

The White House responded on Tuesday to Swift’s request for a response.

Said (gay) White House Deputy Press Secretary Judd Deere to CNN: “The Trump administration absolutely opposes discrimination of any kind and supports the equal treatment of all; however, the House-passed bill in its current form is filled with poison pills that threaten to undermine parental and conscience rights.”

Harry Styles finally sets the record straight on all that bisexual stuff

Harry Styles finally sets the record straight on all that bisexual stuff

Harry Styles has long-avoided using words like “heterosexual” to describe himself and has remained coy when it comes to talking about his sexuality.

In 2017, he told the Sun he didn’t like labeling himself, saying, “It’s weird for me. Everyone should just be who they want to be.”

And in 2018, he released the song “Medicine” that sparked bisexual rumors with lyrics about “messing around” with “boys and girls.”

Now, in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Styles is finally setting the record straight (pun intended) on all that non-heterosexual, possibly bisexual stuff.

When asked about what’s up with him singing about hooking up with guys and girls, waving rainbow flags on stage, and saying stuff like “We’re all a little bit gay, aren’t we?” to entire stadiums of fans, Styles explained his motivations.

“I want to make people feel comfortable being whatever they want to be,” he said. “Maybe at a show you can have a moment of knowing that you’re not alone.”

He continued, “I can’t claim that I know what it’s like, because I don’t. So I’m not trying to say, ‘I understand what it’s like.’ I’m just trying to make people feel included and seen.”

And maybe pander to the gays just a little bit.

Styles added, “It’s not about me trying to champion the cause, because I’m not the person to do that. It’s just about not ignoring it, I guess.”

“Everyone in that room is on the same page and everyone knows what I stand for. I’m not saying I understand how it feels. I’m just trying to say, ‘I see you.’”

The 2019 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), which took place on Monday, were one of the queerest nights in the show’s history, with many LGBTQ artists and supporters of the community taking home a Moonman in several major categories.

Taylor Swift’s video for the pro-LGBTQ anthem “You Need Calm Down” – which features several out LGBTQ celebs like Ellen DeGeneres, Laverne Cox, Adam Rippon, Hayley Kiyoko, and the cast of Queer Eye – took home the award for Video of the Year and Video for Good. Lil Nas X made history when he won the VMA for Best Song with his record-breaking hit “Old Town Road” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, making him the first out LGBTQ musician to win in this category. The video for “Old Town Road” also won the VMA for Best Direction. Other LGBTQ artists who took home VMAs this year include Halsey (Best K-Pop for “Boy with Luv” with BTS) and Panic! At The Disco (Best Rock for “High Hopes”).

Several LGBTQ artists and allies of the community also took to the stage to perform throughout the night. Taylor Swift opened the show with her hit “You Need to Calm Down,” where she was accompanied by several drag queens and members of the LGBTQ community that appeared in the video. Ally Lizzo performed an electrifying medley of her two hits “Truth Hurts” and “Good as Hell.” Rapper Lil Nas X lit up the VMA stage with a futuristic performance of his new single “Panini.” During Missy Elliott’s Vanguard performance, Alyson Stoner appeared on stage to recreate her dance from Missy Elliott’s 2002 video for the song “Work It.” Later in the evening, Miley Cyrus also took to the stage to perform her emotional new single “Slide Away.”

On the red carpet, GLAAD had the chance to speak with various LGBTQ celebs and allies of the community about representation in entertainment, LGBTQ inclusion amongst this year’s VMA nominees, and growing support for LGBTQ artists in the music industry. Check out GLAAD’s interviews with Jonathan Van Ness, Bebe Rexha, Hayley Kiyoko, Lance Bass, Peppermint, and Alyson Stoner below.

A new Hulu documentary takes a deep dive into the monetization of cuteness, focusing on a Tennessee teen’s brushup with online celebrity, likes, and opportunity.

“Jawline” follows two subjects: Austyn Tester, “who built his following on wide-eyed optimism and teen girl lust as he tries to escape a dead-end life”, and Michael Weist, a keen 21-year-old gay social media manager from LA.

Liza Mandelup, who made the film, spoke to NNN about the strange and troubling dynamics at play:

People go [online] to find a community because they feel rejected in life and suicidal. There’s no way that can be a negative thing, but being out of touch with reality and losing touch with real-life friends, that’s not very good.

The whole interview is worth a read, and you can watch the trailer below:

Louis is Desroy’s husband. He is very loyal to Desroy and cares about him very much. He has always wanted to go adventuring with Desroy despite the danger which he isn’t afraid to face. He doesn’t like waiting helplessly at the sidelines but has the sense to know that Desroy only wants to protect him which is something that Louis is touched by but at the same time, he is determined to help in any way he can.
