HRC President Alphonso David Kicks Off Tenure with National Tour of Critical States
Today, HRC announces that on Thursday, HRC President Alphonso David will embark on a national tour of seven key cities to meet with and rally HRC members, advocates, voters and pro-equality candidates ahead of the 2019 and 2020 elections.
David officially began his tenure at HRC on August 7th. His appointment was previously announced in late June. An accomplished and nationally-recognized LGBTQ civil rights lawyer and advocate, David is the first civil rights lawyer and the first person of color to serve as President of HRC in the organization’s nearly 40-year history.
The #WeAreHRC tour marks David’s first official act as the head of the nation’s largest LGBTQ civil rights group and will highlight his priorities for the coming years, including passing the Equality Act, stopping the disturbing trend of anti-trans violence, expanding access to inclusive health care, ending the HIV and AIDS epidemic and electing pro-equality candidates up and down the ballot.
“Our vibrant, diverse community is the fuel that drives our movement and our progress,” said HRC President Alphonso David. “From ending violence against transgender women of color to electing more pro-equality champions at every level of government, many of our biggest battles remain ahead of us. Our work and priorities must always be informed by those who are living these issues and challenges every day, which is why I’m proud to begin my tenure by traveling the country to hear from many of the advocates and activists doing lifesaving work around the country.”
Over the next two weeks, David will travel to Richmond, Virginia; Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio; Dallas, Texas; Los Angeles; Las Vegas, Nevada; and Wilmington, Delaware. In coming months, David will also travel to additional destinations to meet with other HRC members and supporters, activists and elected officials.
David most recently made history as the first openly gay Counsel to the Governor of the State of New York and, before that, served as the first Deputy Secretary and Counsel for Civil Rights in New York. In these roles, he played an integral role in securing marriage equality in New York in 2011, banning the abusive practice of so-called “conversion therapy” on minors, establishing non-discrimination protections for transgender New Yorkers, expanding Medicaid coverage to cover transition-related care, making it easier to amend gender markers on birth certificates, and enacting policies and regulations to support people living with HIV and drive new diagnoses to an all-time low statewide.

He has also helped lead efforts to expand access to reproductive healthcare, restore voting rights to New Yorkers, advance workplace protections for disadvantaged communities, and require access to free translation services in essential state services. Prior to his work for New York State, David served as a staff attorney at Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund.
With more than three million members, the Human Rights Campaign is the largest LGBTQ civil rights organization in the U.S. and around the globe. Founded in 1980, HRC has grown into one of the most effective advocacy organizations in America, leading the way to expand LGBTQ protections at every level of government, elect pro-equality lawmakers, defend the fundamental civil rights of LGBTQ people, and work through groundbreaking Foundation programs to enhance the lived experiences of LGBTQ people at school, work and in every community. HRC has played a pivotal role in sweeping progress for LGBTQ people over the last several decades, from winning marriage equality and passing federal hate crimes legislation, to advancing comprehensive LGBTQ non-discrimination legislation through Congress, to working with thousands of companies to expand workplace protections, to repealing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ and banning so-called ‘conversion therapy’ in a growing number of states.
David is the seventh president of the Human Rights Campaign, succeeding Chad Griffin, who had served since 2012.

INTERVIEW: Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney talks “David Makes Man” and the importance of Black LGBTQ visibility in Hollywood
On Wednesday, Academy Award winner Tarell Alvin McCraney (“Moonlight”) stopped by the GLAAD headquarters in New York to speak with journalist George M. Johnson about the new OWN original TV series “David Makes Man.” The series, which premieres on August 14, is McCraney’s first TV project, serving as the creator and co-executive producer alongside showrunner Dee Harris-Lawrence (“ShotsFired,” “Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G.”). Michael B. Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Mike Kelley, and Melissa Loy also serve as co-executive producers for the series.
Check out the full interview below:
When asked about the reason for including LGBTQ characters in “David Makes Man,” McCraney stated that “the fabric of the story could only be told with them in it because of the experiences that I had, and a lot of people who have helped to collaborate and make this story all have LGBTQ folks in their lives.” He continued, “The people you see are a representation of the people who were part of my community and are a part of my community. It was important to tell the truth, but also easier.”
In a discussion regarding the “room for growth” for Black storytelling in Hollywood, McCraney mentioned: “The fact that we have to talk about ‘room’ means there is still stuff to do. But you know…we’re not where we were 10 years ago and that’s to be celebrated and to be advanced.”
The one-hour lyrical drama “David Makes Man” focuses on the life of a “14-year-old prodigy from the projects who is haunted by the death of his closest friend and relied on by his hardworking mother to find a way out of poverty.” The series, which is set in South Florida, is inspired by events in McCraney’s own life, looking at the themes of “childhood trauma and the power of imagination to survive.” The new series features a star-studded cast, including Akili McDowell (“The Astronaut Wives Club”), Isaiah Johnson (“Hamilton”), Travis Coles (“Liza on Demand”), Phylicia Rashad (“Creed II”), Nathaniel Logan McIntyre (“Celebrity Ghost Stories”), Cayden K. Williams (“Girls Trip”), Ade Chike Torbert (“East Los High”), and Jordan Bolger (Peaky Blinders).
“David Makes Man” airs on OWN on Wednesdays at 10pm ET.

Homophobic Oregon man makes history as first person charged under new hate crime law
A Portland man made history over the weekend when he became the first person in the state of Oregon charged with violating the state’s new hate crime law, which went into effect on July 15.
58-year-old Robert Oden was arrested Saturday after allegedly assaulting a group of gay Latino men leaving CC Slaughters, a popular gay nightclub in Portland.
According to court documents, the three men exited the nightclub at around 2 a.m. As they were strolling down the sidewalk, they passed by Oden.
The men paid no mind to him until, unprovoked, he started shouting antigay slurs at them then told them to “go back to your country” before hitting all three in their faces, resulting in one man suffering a “swollen and bloody lip.”
Witnesses called police and Oden was arrested. During his arrest, he continued shouting racist and homophobic slurs as he threatened more assaults.
Last month, lawmakers in the Beaver State passed Senate Bill 577, which makes it a felony to cause physical injury to another person because of their perceived race, color, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, or national origin.
Prior to the new law being passed, in order for a person to be charged with a felony, two or more people needed to commit the offense.
Oden has been charged with one count of bias crime in the first degree, felony assault in the fourth degree, two counts of harassment and two counts of bias crime in the second degree.

JEFFREY EPSTEIN. Two prison guards slept through checks, falsified records: “The two staff members in the special housing unit where Mr. Epstein was held — 9 South — falsely recorded in a log that they had checked on the financier, who was facing sex trafficking charges, every 30 minutes, as was required, two of the officials said. Such false entries in an official log could constitute a federal crime. In fact, the two people guarding Mr. Epstein had been asleep for some or all of the three hours, three of the officials said.”

You know, gays like things a little tighter, a little shorter, a little skimpy or a little shearer. They like it a little sexier,” Block said. “Now, we’re just becoming a kind of big city. Money comes in, developments come in, restaurants come in.”
NORTH CAROLINA. North Carolina Gay + Lesbian Film Festival is now the OutSouth Queer Film Festival: “The new name reflects programming efforts to include everyone under the LGBTQ umbrella, an important change for the second-largest LGBTQ film festival in the Southeast, which is dwarfed only by OUTshine in Miami, a festival that has undergone a similar rebranding in recent years.”
