Popular radio host who came out on live air last month says his family has quit talking to him

Iain Lee radio host

Iain Lee is a popular radio host, comedian, and reality TV personality for the U.K. Last month, he made a big reveal about his sexuality.

After surviving a bad car accident, Lee explained, he began seeing a psychotherapist, who helped him realize he was bisexual.

“He’s helped me realize that I’m probably bisexual. So, I guess, I’m coming out,” he said. “This is me coming out, I suppose, is how they would call it, at the age of 46, and I’m terrified by it.”

He went on to talk about how he first began experimenting with “significantly older men” when he was a teenager, though he’s since come to identify those experiences as sexual abuse.

“I’ve been reminded of a lot of stuff that kind of started when I was about 14 or 15 years old, and would involve me basically engaged in sexual acts with significantly older men,” Lee recalled.

“This went on for quite a while, and I’ve always had a lot of confusion around it, because I started putting myself in these positions so that these things would happen again.”

Now, he says, revealing that part about himself to the world has cost him his relationship with several family members.

In a heartbreaking social media post this week, Lee said he’s been having difficultly sleeping after certain members of his family have severed ties with him.

“Slept badly,” he tweeted on Wednesday. “Full of resentment at how some family members have completely cut me off after I told my story of being abused as an 8 and 14 year old and also about my sexuality.”

“Childish, disappointing and very sad. I expected more from family when strangers have been so kind.”

During a recent appearance on Good Morning Britain, Lee talked openly about the “shame” he used to feel about both his abuse and about being bisexual, but he said he’s in “in a great place” since coming out to the world.

“It has lifted a huge weight and nearly everyone has been brilliant and it’s not a big thing, it’s not like I am now going to go around and start queening up and going out with loads of guys and stuff,” he said.

“That’s not what it’s about, it’s about saying I have done this stuff in the past that I have had a lot of shame around and actually I don’t need to be ashamed about it. I am in a great place. My life has changed.”

Sadly, Lee’s experience with his family is not uncommon.

A 2016 study by Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health found that many bisexual men remain closeted for fear of being labeled as gay, becoming targets of violence, or being disowned by their families.

Another 2016 study by Vanderbilt University found that bisexuals reported the highest levels of psychological distress among the LGB community, with much of this due to feeling ostracized and isolated from friends and family.

Former antigay Rep. Aaron Schock has popped up again shirtless with a gay companion, this time on a beach in Malibu.

The reveal came courtesy of Jeremy Cormier, a New York-based Instagrammer whose feed consists mostly of shirtless pictures in various scenic locales. Cormier posted the pic, which he also tagged to Schock’s own Instagram.

Related: Twitter has a lot to say about that video of Aaron Schock stuffing dollars into a go-go boy’s briefs

We have to wonder if Cromier knows about Schock’s long anti-gay record. Schock was a reliable antigay vote while serving as U.S. Representative for Illinois’s 18th congressional district from 2009 until 2015. To add insult to injury, Schock has been living a seemingly out-gay life, all while refusing to address the damage he’s inflicted on the LGBTQ community.

Among his political positions, he voted against adding ‘sexual orientation, gender identity, gender and disability’ to the federal hate crime protection groups, against the repeal of ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ and for the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

His politics at one time earned him a 0 percent approval rating from the Human Rights Campaign for his opposition to LGBTQ equality.

For Cromier’s sake, we hope he’s just ignorant of the company he’s keeping. And since his social media presence appears as well-maintained as his six-pack, he may want to rethink how his latest share is going to play with other queer Instagram users.

Gay Man Runs for President of Tunisia, a First for Arab World: WATCH

In a first for Tunisia and the Arab world, a gay man is running for president.

France24 reports: “Liberal Party leader Mounir Baatour, an openly gay lawyer, announced on Thursday he would stand in Tunisia’s presidential elections, marking a first for the Arab world. Baatour’s candidacy marks ‘a first which will without doubt be a benchmark in history’, his party said. A lawyer at the Court of Cassation, Tunisia’s highest court, the Liberal Party leader presents himself as a defender of LGBT rights. But ahead of his announcement, a petition signed by 18 groups who campaign for those rights warned his candidacy would represent a ‘danger’ for their communities.”

Every week, The GLAAD Wrap brings you LGBTQ-related entertainment news highlights, fresh stuff to watch out for, and fun diversions to help you kick off the weekend.

1) The Netflix movie Rocko’s Modern Life: Static Cling is set to release on the streaming site this Friday, August 9th. The special, a continuation of the Nickelodeon TV series from the 90’s, will feature a prominent trans storyline with the character of Rachel, a member of the Bighead family. Set in the 21st century, Rocko and his friends must adapt to a changing world, while searching for (and accepting) Rachel. Watch the trailer for the 45-minute special below.

2) Adam, the new film from transgender director Rhys Ernst, hits movie theaters in New York next Wednesday, August 14, and Los Angeles theaters on Friday, August 23. This smart, nuanced comedy premiered at Sundance in 2019, and was snapped up by Wolfe Releasing soon after. It has played at Toronto’s Inside Out Film Festival and LA’s Outfest, where Ernst snagged a special award for directing. Adam is set in Brooklyn during the summer of 2006, when a growing number of trans men, trans women, and non-binary people were becoming more visible in the queer community. (Ernst was, himself, living in Brooklyn and coming out as trans during that time.) Adam is a 17-year-old, naïve cisgender boy who comes to New York to spend the summer with his queer older sister. At a party, Adam meets the girl of his dreams who assumes that he is a transgender guy – and he doesn’t correct her. This twist on the typical “transgender deception” narrative has caused some to express concern about the film. We encourage you to check out these articles about the film by trans and queer journalists including Jude Dry (IndieWire), Shannon Keating (Buzzfeed), Oliver Whitney (Vulture), and Jenni Olson (NewNowNext). Whether or not independent films can play in theaters around the country is often determined by how well they do on opening weekend in NY and LA. Consider seeing Adam on opening weekend to support a trans filmmaker and queer cinema. Check out the trailer below, and you can purchase tickets for New York and Los Angeles nowAdam will be rolling out in more cities, check out @AdamTheFilm on Twitter and Instagram for more dates.

3) The trailer for the second season of DC’s Titans has been released. The series also features an aspiring Broadway actor and drag queen, played by Jonny Beauchamp. The trailer for the second season of Mindhunter has been released. The series, which stars out actor Jonathan Groff, will take on the Atlanta child murders from the late 70’s in its new season, which premieres August 16th on Netflix. Watch the trailer here.

Pride is a six-part docu-series chronicling the fight for LGBTQ civil rights in America through the lens of history, pop culture, and politics. Each episode will be directed by a different LGBTQ director, and is produced by Christine Vachon’s Killer Films and Refinery 29. Additionally, Snowfall, which features a lesbian couple, has been renewed for a fourth season. Watch the trailer for season 3, which is currently playing on FX.

Memers come for Equinox and its Trump-supporting owner

Memers come for Equinox and its Trump-supporting owner

People have been up in arms all week after it was reported that Stephen Ross, the billionaire real estate developer who holds the majority stake in Equinox Fitness Clubs, will host a $250,000 per person fundraiser for Trump’s reelection campaign this weekend.

Gay Twitter lit up with tweets of outrage. Equinox members, and those of its subsidiaries like PURE Yoga, Blink Fitness and SoulCylce, began cancelling their memberships in droves. Political pundits began offering their opinions on the controversy.

And then came the memes…

Trump on Equinox Owner Stephen Ross: ‘He’s Probably More Inclined to Be a Liberal But He Likes Me, He Respects Me’ — WATCH

In a scrum with reporters before getting on his helicopter, Donald Trump was asked about Equinox owner Stephen Ross, who is hosting a fundraiser headlined by the president on Friday.

— CBS News (@CBSNews) August 9, 2019

Said Trump: “Stephen Ross is a great friend of mine. He’s a very successful guy. We were competitors and friends in real estate in New York in the old days. He’s a great guy. By the way, I think he’s probably more inclined to be a liberal, if you want to know the truth but he likes me, he respects me. … I understand the fundraiser was totally sold out. And it’s very successful.”

Calls to ‘boycott Equinox’ rang out across social media on Wednesday after news broke that Ross, who also owns the fitness companies SoulCycle, Blink Fitness and PURE Yoga as well as a long list of other properties including the Miami Dolphins, was hosting the $250,000/top ticket Trump fundraiser in the Hamptons on Friday.
