GLAAD: It’s a “Missed Opportunity” That Not One LGBTQ Question Was Asked During Tonight’s Democratic Presidential Debate
NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, tonight released the following statement after the conclusion of the Democratic Party’s second presidential primary debate, in which viewers failed to hear any mention of the LGBTQ community from the media and 2020 presidential candidates.
“Omitting any questions about reversing the dangerous attacks President Trump has made against LGBTQ Americans since taking office is a missed opportunity that needs to be corrected in tomorrow’s debate and across future election coverage,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “At a time when the Trump Administration tries to erase the LGBTQ community at every turn, the media should make LGBTQ-specific issues a priority by asking each presidential candidate how they will fight for and protect LGBTQ people across the nation.”

ALL ABOUT THE BASE. Trump aides see Democratic sparring as way to grow base: “According to four people involved with or close to the Trump campaign, the president’s reelection team believes trumpeting these moments will help win over a certain type of voter that could help carry him to a second term. It’s the voter who might be wary of Trump, but is more alarmed by a Democratic Party they feel is drifting dangerously to the left.”
BREACH. Massive data breach affects 100 million Capital One customers: “The suspect, Paige Thompson, 33, left a trail online for investigators to follow as she boasted about the hacking, according to court documents in Seattle, where she was arrested and charged with one count of computer fraud and abuse.”

GAY STAR NEWS. UK-based LGBTQ publication shuts down. “There are a number of reasons, of course. But the biggest change was the level of confidence brands and businesses in the UK have, due to the uncertainty over Brexit. It won’t surprise anyone to hear that many media organisations are struggling with the same problem. There has also been another trend which has become more apparent this year. Brands which are wishing to ‘do’ LGBTI work are increasingly doing so in a tokenistic way.”
PLASTICS. Holiday Inn to ditch mini-shampoos: “The owner of Holiday Inn and InterContinental Hotels says Tuesday that its nearly 843,000 guest rooms are switching to bulk-size bathroom amenities as part of an effort to cut waste. The transition is due to be completed in 2021.”

Thus, a competency trial with a jury was arranged, Hall said.”

COVERING 2020: GLAAD Releases Second Tip Sheet for Journalists; Momentum Building for Constitutional Equality
GLAAD urges all 2020 candidates to support an expanded ERA that would explicitly protect women, people of color, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities
GLAAD President & CEO: “…the issue of non-discrimination has a rightful place in this week’s debate and through the campaign trail.”
NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today announced its second in a series of tip sheets for journalists covering the 2020 election ahead of the second Democratic Primary Debates in Detroit, Michigan. The second tip sheet, Covering 2020: An Amendment for Constitutional Equality, highlights an idea to expand the proposed Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to include explicit protections for other marginalized communities – including people of color, the disabled, and LGBTQ Americans.
The New York Times spotlighted GLAAD’s support for an Amendment for Constitutional Equality last month on the 50thanniversary of the Stonewall Inn Riots and the start of the first presidential debates for the 2020 election cycle. During those debates, Democratic candidates like Kamala Harris, Julian Castro, and Elizabeth Warren called for policies to protect LGBTQ Americans, people of color, and women – including ratification of the original ERA. Legal and policy experts convened by theERA Coalition have crafted draft language – The Amendment for Constitutional Equality – that meets this imperative.
“LGBTQ issues were nearly invisible in the last Presidential election and now need to be front and center alongside issues impacting other marginalized communities,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “At a time when marginalized communities are under attack, the issue of non-discrimination has a rightful place in this week’s debate and through the campaign trail.”
