RIP. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens dies at 99. “John Paul Stevens, whose 35 years on the United States Supreme Court transformed him, improbably, from a Republican antitrust lawyer into the outspoken leader of the court’s liberal wing, died on Tuesday at a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “
RIGHTEOUS INDIGNATION. John Lewis rises to speak in in support of resolution condemning Trump’s tweets.
DIABETES FUEL. Sugar rush: “Twinkies cereal, which looks like a cross between fried maggots and uncut penises, may be coming soon…”
ARTICLES OF IMPEACHMENT. House to vote on whether to consider…. “The move, forced by a Democratic lawmaker from Texas who used a procedural mechanism that required action within two days, is unlikely to succeed. Speaker Nancy Pelosi has long opposed efforts to immediately begin impeachment proceedings against Trump and confirmed she would not support Green’s resolution.”
MAXED OUT. Buttigieg’s celeb support robust…
NIGHTMARE FUEL. A MAGA-themed wedding. “It looked like America threw up all over my wedding and I’m not sorry.”
PREMEDITATED RACISM. A central tenet of Trump’s campaign: “Trump sees the four progressive women in The Squad as perfect foils until he gets a Democratic nominee to run against.”
FRANKLIN GRAHAM. U.S. may never recover from Equality Act: “This legislation will have catastrophic consequences for competitive sports, along with churches and faith-based nonprofits who would lose all protections to hire people who adhere to their Biblical statements of faith. Christians will be persecuted for their sincerely held beliefs as never before. The clear teachings of the Bible on the sins of homosexuality and abortion will no doubt be considered “hate speech.” It will be a nightmare from which this nation may never recover.”
IMPROV OF THE DAY. Comic plays on as the California earthquake hits.
KIM JONG UN. How he got his luxury bulletproof Mercedes around sanctions.
KATHY GRIFFIN. “Andy Cohen treated me like a dog.“

GLAAD Praises Groundbreaking “The Sims 4” Box Art with LGBTQ Couple
This week Electronic Arts revealed newly redesigned box art for its best-selling game The Sims 4 which, in a major groundbreaking move, features an LGBTQ couple. It is the first-ever LGBTQ couple in cover art for a game from a major studio. Sims characters Dela Ostrow and Mia Hayes, pictured in the lower left, are described as girlfriends within the game itself.
“The Sims franchise has been an industry leader on LGBTQ representation and this week it crossed another milestone. We applaud Electronic Arts and Maxis for putting an LGBTQ couple front and center on its new, rebranded box art for The Sims 4. LGBTQ players have been a major part of The Sims community from the beginning, and this recognition and visibility is important and well deserved. This is a breakthrough moment for representation in the video game space, and we encourage others to step up and match this kind of visibility in their new releases and updates,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President & CEO of GLAAD.
The Sims Mobile was among the nominees for the inaugural Outstanding Video Game category at the GLAAD Media Awards earlier this year, the latest in GLAAD’s emerging work to ensure that video games and the gaming community become more inclusive. In 2016, transgender and gender expansive characters were added to The Sims 4 through a collaboration between GLAAD and Electronic Arts. GLAAD is proudly continuing to work with industry partners and lead conversations at major gaming events, including E3, DICE, and PAX, to promote LGBTQ acceptance in gaming.

Billy Porter just made history. Now he wants an Emmy for his birthday.
Pose star Billy Porter is still reeling from his first-ever Emmy nomination.
Porter, who plays the emcee Pray Tell on the acclaimed FX series, became the first-ever out-gay African American actor nominated for Best Actor in a Drama at the Emmy Nominations on July 16. He remarked that he was “finally able to breathe” following the announcement. Pose also nabbed a nomination in the Best Drama category.
Porter also trumpets his and the show’s success as part of the ongoing struggle for acceptance by the queer community. “It really opens up and creates a different kind of conversation in a different space,” he says of the show’s nominations. “It’s about representation. It’s about all people’s stories being told. It’s about the art. We creative people have the power to transform hearts and minds doing the work that we do and I am just thrilled to be able to do that. It feels like a calling. I’ve lived in that ministry, came up in the ’80s and lived through the plague — and I’m here for a reason. I’m here so I can be on this other side to tell this story about this world. We’re here. We’ve always been here and we’re not going anywhere — get used to it.”

“When we were growing up, there was no context because you could never see it” Porter adds. “I’ve always had huge dreams but I realized now that my dreams have been springboarded off of things I have already seen. They weren’t about dreaming the impossible. They weren’t about dreaming things that didn’t exist. Ryan Murphy, Steven Canals, Brad Falchuk, FX — everybody involved in the show taught me how to dream the impossible. The sky is the limit now, honey!”
Amid the celebration of his nomination, Porter also noted that he has a birthday coming up: his 50th, which arrives one day before the awards ceremony. He also added that an Emmy would make for a great birthday gift. Personally, we can’t think of a better gift for such a talented man.
