HRC Global Brings Leaders Together to Share Ideas for Building a Stronger Movement

HRC Global Brings Leaders Together to Share Ideas for Building a Stronger Movement

Over the past several months, HRC Global staff traveled through Europe and Asia to share HRC’s experience and lessons learned from working for equality in the U.S. with partner organizations worldwide. In places like Bulgaria, Ukraine, Poland and Vietnam, HRC delivered customized capacity-building workshops to support HRC’s partners in their efforts to strengthen their advocacy for equality.

These workshops form part of HRC Global’s Partnerships in Innovative Advocacy program, in which HRC works with selected organizations on topics ranging from designing advocacy campaigns, challenging discriminatory laws and policies, engaging allies and changing societal institutions to be more inclusive. HRC partners with members of HRC Global’s alumni network, including HRC Global InnovatorsFellows and other advocates from around the world.

Bulgaria

Jay Gilliam, director of global leadership, joined LGBTQ advocates in Bulgaria for a week of training and capacity building in June. He shared strategies that HRC uses to support and uplift  LGBTQ youth through programs including HRC’s Welcoming Schools program and HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council. He also joined alumni to celebrate Sofia Pride.

.@HRC Global’s Jay Gilliam joined LGBTQ advocates and allies from:
Albania,
Bulgaria,
Hungary,
Romania and
Slovakia
for a four-day convening to share strategies to support LGBTQ youth.

Poland

For three days, Jean Freedberg, director of global partnerships, worked with KPH, Poland’s leading LGBTQ organization, to develop a strategic plan to help take the  group’s communications and messaging efforts to the next level. Under the auspices of the National Democratic Institute, the group explored topics such as audience and stakeholder assessment, values-based messaging, managing to do more with less and crisis response.

@HRC Global spent three inspiring days with the Campaign Against Homophobia in #Warsaw ( @KPH_official), sharing ideas about how strategic communications can help advance #equality in #Poland.

Thanks to @NDI for making this workshop possible. ️‍ pic.twitter.com/PPRxN0J3z7

Ukraine

Travelling to a retreat center outside Kyiv, Freedberg worked with a group of LGBTQ advocates from seven regions across Ukraine to help develop a public information campaign to change hearts and minds about LGBTQ people. This program, guided by the results of the National Democratic Institute’s polling on attitudes toward LGBTQ people, seeks to create ways for the country’s LGBTQ advocates to work together to build allies, reach out, change perceptions and engage the public.

Vietnam

Gilliam traveled to Vietnam in May to reconnect with HRC’s Global Fellow Thu Le. During his week there, Gilliam learned more about Le’s work at iSEE, a human rights organization in Vietnam, and met with LGBTQ community members and organizations. He shared HRC’s experiences in building community, raising awareness of LGBTQ issues and advocating for the rights of LGBTQ people in the U.S. and around the world. He also conducted a workshop for advocates to help build their capacities to develop strong membership bases and supporters for their work on LGBTQ equality.

For #APAHM, @HRC‘s Jay Gilliam is in Vietnam during #IDAHOT, along with @ACYPL, to visit Global Fellow Thu Le (@iSee_News) and other dynamic LGBTQ leaders and allies from organizations including @PFLAG Vietnam, Hanoi Queer, NextGEN, 6+ and It’s T Time. ️‍ pic.twitter.com/pnJT6YEOsZ

Ivanka Trump and Abe Lincoln

After video of Ivanka Trump awkwardly inserting herself into a conversation with several world leaders at the G20 summit in Japan went viral last weekend, the whole world was laughing at the United State of America. And rightfully so.

Many couldn’t help but wonder what the president’s daughter, who has zero qualifications to serve as a diplomatic representative of the United States, was doing at there in the first place.

Pretty soon the hashtag #UnwantedIvanka was trending on social media, with memers photoshopping the First Daughter into various scenes where she very clearly doesn’t belong.

We’ve already done one roundup of #UnwantedIvanka memes, but more keep coming, and they’re getting better and better.

‘I’ll Beat the Gay Out of You’ — Man Attacked in McDonald’s for Dressing Too Feminine: WATCH

In a video that has gone viral on social media, a man is seen attacking another man in a McDonald’s in Barcelona, Spain for his feminine dress. The altercation took place during the Pride celebration in Barcelona.

— Celopan #MerezcoAlgoMejor (@CelopanYT) June 28, 2019

The aggressor launched into a tirade over the man’s neon yellow crop top and short denim shorts, saying it was “disrespectful” to be dressed “like that” when there are children around.

Said the man being attacked to the security guard: “I really have to put up with a guy telling me that I can’t dress like this? It’s gay Pride day.”

Said the aggressor: “I don’t care what day it is, it is also a good day to hit you. Do you want to see? I’m going to beat the gay out of you. When you walk out of here I’m going to hit you so hard the gay will vanish.”

Said Pride Barcelona in a statement: “We are completely outraged by the serious episode of homophobia suffered yesterday in an establishment near Plaza Universitat. We offer all our support to the victim and we encourage him to make a report to the Observatori against Homophobia.”

On Sunday, hundreds joined GLAAD in the historic NYC Pride March as the city welcomed millions for WorldPride. This was the first time in history that any U.S. city has hosted WorldPride, with this year’s celebration coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. The 2019 March in New York is said to have attracted a record-breaking 4+ million attendees, making it the most celebrated Pride event in history.

In this year’s march, several celebrities and influencers joined GLAAD, including Melissa Etheridge, Billy Gilman, Raymond Braun, Sonya Deville, Geena Rocero, Stephanie Beatriz, and Kat Cunning. These notable guests joined GLAAD President & CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis atop a custom GLAAD float equipped with giant GLAAD amplifiers and wrapped in historic imagery representing 50 years of LGBTQ representation in media. Also on the float, GLAAD’s very own DJ Blacklow kept the energy alive all day with many LGBTQ anthems and remixes.

Each celebrity on the float, as well as the 150+ marchers who represented GLAAD, sported looks from the Express LOVE UNITES collection that benefits GLAAD. As an official pride & apparel sponsor, Express is donating 25% of the net income from each LOVE UNITES item purchased by July 15 to GLAAD’s ongoing work to accelerate acceptance for the LGBTQ community.

Check out some of the photos (credit to Cindy Trinh) and best social posts from the historic Pride event below. A special thank you to Express, and to all the celebrities and marchers who joined GLAAD as we celebrated WorldPride this year!

From secretly studying Stonewall in 11th grade to celebrating and honoring this monument during the World Pride Parade. I will never forgot riding by Stonewall, feeling the energy of New York City pulsing with Pride and love. . We made history. 4-5 million people celebrated Pride in New York City, making yesterday the biggest World Pride ever! I am so proud of our community and the way we honored Pride this year – so many people have shared their stories, their advocacy, their triumphs, their struggles, their protests, their art, their joy, their vulnerability, their catharsis. Each of us, in our own way, has contributed to the collective visibility and progress of our movement. Together, we create the most brilliant, colorful, dazzling, powerful mosaic of change. . In a world that politicizes who we are and who we love, our existence can be a beacon of hope for others. When we are visibly LGBTQ+, we help other people know that they can be, too. These images from World Pride will be broadcast around the world, and I hope they connect with anyone struggling. Pride is for you. Love you. . Thank you, @visualrev and @cindytrinh.photo for capturing these moments I’ll forever cherish!

WATCH: Hetero hater threatens to “beat the gay out of” a gay man during Pride

Barcelona Pride

There’s a sad anecdote that circulates every Pride of an NYC subway passenger who sees fellow queers removing their rainbow gear on their ways home because they’re afraid of getting harassed away from the parade. The story is apocryphal, but it conveys a truth: It’s not always safe to express your queerness in public.

Take this incident for example…

In a video recorded in a McDonald’s during Pride weekend in Barcelona, Spain this last Friday, a man in a neon yellow tank top, short cut-off jean shorts and sneakers was harassed by a presumably hetero hater with a fauxhawk. The hater tells the man, “I’m going to beat you till you become heterosexual.”

According to Gay Star News:

“The homophobe expressed that he ‘didn’t agree’ with the ensemble, and told him that it was ‘disrespectful’ to be dressed ‘like that’ in public.

‘I don’t care if you’re queer,’ he added.

‘I really have to put up with a guy telling me that I can’t dress like this?’ the victim complained to the security man in the clip. Flagging that is it ‘Gay Pride Day.’

Moreover, the man replied: ‘I don’t care what day it is, it is also a good day to punch you. Do you want to see?’ …

‘When you go out, I am going to hit you so hard your queerness will disappear.’”

The person recording the video eventually intervened and police arrived soon after, though the harassed man opted not to press charges.

Here is video of the incident:

“Te voy a hacer heterosexual a ostias”

— paleo_20 (@paleo_20) June 27, 2019

The Spanish accompanying the tweet above reads: “Today my friend has suffered an attack at a McDonald’s in Barcelona for his way of dressing so “feminine”. It is ironic that this happens the same day as the proclamation of pride but we must continue fighting to end these acts and these people.”

The city’s Pride organization also spoke out against the incident, urging the harassed man to file an official report so that his incident doesn’t go forgotten.

Shopper Flies into Abusive Rage Over Gay Pride Garden Gnomes

Shopper Flies into Abusive Rage Over Gay Pride Garden Gnomes

A short-tempered shopper at the UK retailer Asda had a meltdown because the shop was selling a pair of gendered Pride gnomes wearing rainbow hats.

Metro reports: ‘Four officers attended the Estover branch in Plymouth, Devon, at around 4.25pm on Saturday following reports of an abusive male shouting at staff. An eyewitness said: ‘[A man was] causing a disturbance over a gnome, sort of gay pride flag colours, which I’m all for. ‘The guy started saying random things like it’s a gnome, it’s offended him as they don’t have a sexuality. ‘I’m assuming the guy was offended as they look like they have a gender, that’s the bit I caught of the situation.’’

A spokesman for the chain confirmed to GSN that the gnomes are the same ones introduced for Pride in 2017.
