LGBTQIA+ Icons Madonna, Grace Jones, Cyndi Lauper, Melissa Etheridge and More Will Make WorldPride 2019 Unforgettable

It’s going to be a legendary celebration as WorldPride 2019 | Stonewall 50 kicks off Pride month in New York City with one of the greatest LGBTQ icons of the last half-century: Madonna.

The Queen of Pop broke the news on a video broadcast on The Today Show this week. She addressed rumors of her appearance that have been swirling for the better part of the last year.

“I hear you,” said Madonna in the video, while draped in one of her Madame X Rainbow Flags, “I will be on Pride Island, where I was born.”

Madonna will appear during the second night of Pride Island, the weekend-long concert experience held on Hudson River Park’s Pier 97, June 29 and 30. She is expected to perform a few songs at the close of the event Sunday. Grace Jones will headline Saturday evening, alongside performers Teyana Taylor and Kim Petras.

Tickets for both nights of Pride Island have already sold out.

That’s not the only opportunity to spot stars, however. The Opening Ceremony will bring the party across the East River to Brooklyn where Cyndi Lauper, Chaka Khan, Ciara, Billy Porter and more are slated to perform at Barclays Center.

EGOT-winner and LGBTQIA+ advocate Whoopi Goldberg will serve as the opening ceremony host. Tickets are on sale, and benefit the Ali Forney Center, SAGE and Immigration Equality.

Additionally, the Closing Ceremony will be a star-studded event featuring host Margaret Cho and performances from Jake Shears, Deborah Cox and Melissa Etheridge. Tickets are free for the Times Square performances, but pre-registration is required. Also be sure to check the list of permitted items as there will be extensive bag checks.

As this year’s Pride celebrations commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, politics remain front and center at this year’s festivities.

On Friday, June 28, LGBTQIA+ and human rights organizers and activists will take to the streets at Christopher Street and Waverly Place in the West Village. The free rally marks the anniversary of the “Gay Power” demonstration first held in Washington Square Park in 1969.

There’s also the annual Pride March which will feature an estimated 150,000 marchers. The route begins on the corner of 26th Street and Fifth Avenue, heads west on 8th Street, continues on Christopher Street, past the Stonewall National Monument, before turning up 7th Avenue and passing the New York City AIDS Memorial.

This year’s spectacular march will be highlighted by a collection of impressive Grand Marshals. The cast of Pose on FX (including Dominique Jackson, Indya Moore and MJ Rodriquez), UK Black Pride organizer Phyll Opoku-Gyimah, trans activist Monica Helms, the Trevor Project and the Gay Liberation Front are all among those leading this year’s march.

That’s just a sampling of the 50+ events taking place this month in New York City, including parties, political conferences, arts festivals and family events. Browse all this year’s programming at 2019-worldpride-stonewall50.nycpride.org.

Honey Mahogany helped create the world’s first trans cultural district

Honey Mahogany helped create the world’s first trans cultural district

Name: Honey Mahogany, 35

Who She Is: Drag queen, politico, activist

How She’s Contributed: Mahogany, aka Alpha Mulugeta, grew up near San Francisco and began performing in drag clubs as a student at the University of Southern California, eventually landing a spot on Season 5 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. She shocked fans of the show by singing her own songs rather than lip syncing. Following her stint on Drag Race, she embarked on a successful recording career, releasing her album Honey Love in 2014.

Mahogany’s impressive work doesn’t end when she comes offstage. In her hometown, she’s become a staunch advocate for transgender equality with a nod toward historic preservation. Last year, Mahogany helped establish the Compton’s Transgender Cultural District, the world’s first such designation, in the Tenderloin neighborhood. The district takes its name from Gene Compton’s Cafeteria, a restaurant popular with drag queens and transgender people during the 1960s where one of the first anti-police harassment riots took place.

In addition, Mahogany is active in Democratic Party of California, serves as co-president of the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club, and works as a legislative aide to Matt Haney of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Why We’re Proud: We love a celebrity who uses fame to further the cause of civil rights, and Mahogany’s groundbreaking work in establishing the Compton’s Transgender Cultural District qualifies as one hell of an achievement. Her efforts have helped create a safe trans space while preserving the history of the community, sparking collaboration—the developer of a new 12-story hotel has donated $300,000 to help with preservation.

Mahogany told NPR:

This place has really been a centerpiece for the community. It’s a place for people to meet during the day, at night. With gentrification, we’re seeing the continued destruction of a lot of the old buildings. And with the destruction of these buildings, we’re also losing the stories that go along with them. If we’re not fighting to provide economic opportunities for our community, and if we’re not fighting to improve our neighborhood, I’m not sure what we’re fighting for.

Trump Kills AIDS Research as Gift to Anti-Abortion Activists

Trump Kills AIDS Research as Gift to Anti-Abortion Activists

Donald Trump on Wednesday personally put an end to government-funded medical research that tests new HIV therapies using fetal tissue.

Said White House spokesman Judd Deere: “This was the president’s decision, another important policy . . . to protect the dignity of human life.”

The Washington Post reports: “The change represents a victory for antiabortion advocates, who immediately lauded the change, and a major disappointment to scientists who say the tissue collected from elective abortions has been instrumental to unlocking the secrets of diseases that range from AIDS to cancers to Zika, as well as to developing vaccines and treatments for illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease.”

The WaPo adds: “Immediately affected is a University of California at San Francisco laboratory whose multiyear contract with the National Institutes of Health to test potential HIV therapies using “humanized mice” was terminated for unspecified ethical reasons. The government has been the lab’s sole source of funding.”

Vice President Mike Pence “worked closely with HHS officials to develop the policy” according to an unnamed White House official.
