The owner of Langer’s Deli, an L.A. institution, is under fire after he asked a gay couple to leave the restaurant for kissing.

A woman on Twitter, later identified as Rachel Curry, accused the deli’s owner, Norm Langer, of creating an “unsafe space” for LGBTQ people and said the incident, in which he stood over her table with a walkie-talkie and humiliated her felt “violent and wrong.”

Langer responded with his own statement on Twitter and spoke with the L.A. Times.

In the statement, Langer said that “Langer’s Deli is open and inclusive to all people,” adding “We have a long-standing policy against anyone from ‘making out’ whether straight or same-sex couples, it does not matter. I have stopped heterosexual couples from making out, and I would do the same if Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were making out. We are a family restaurant and I apologize if some people do not like our policy.”

Curry responded in kind, calling the incident, “blatant discrimination against queer people. He said ‘I can’t have this behavior in my restaurant. Coded language to tell us that our queer behavior would not be tolerated in his establishment.”

Said Langer to the L.A. Times: “The whole thing is absurd. The two ladies came in around 11:30, they were sitting next to each other and throughout the meal they started snuggling and making out. I walked over to the table and said, ‘Hi, I’m Norm Langer. I’m glad you’re here, but it’s not really a place to make out. They said are you against the LGBTQ community, and I said, ‘No, I’m not.’

Playwright Jeremy O. Harris is “the queer black savior the theater world needs”

Playwright Jeremy O. Harris is “the queer black savior the theater world needs”

Jeremy O Harris

Name: Jeremy O. Harris

Who is he: Playwright and actor

What he’s accomplished: In December 2018, Harris’ play “Slave Play” debuted at the New York Theatre Workshop, where it received rave reviews. The play explores themes of race, sex, and sexuality on a slave plantation in the Antebellum South.

Also in 2018, he won the Paula Vogel Playwriting Award, the Rosa Parks Playwriting Award, the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award, and the Lotos Foundation Prize, and he was deemed by Out magazine “the queer black savior the theater world needs.”

Then in February 2019, his play “Daddy” opened Off-Broadway in a co-production by the New Group and Vineyard Theater starring Alan Cumming. It, too, received rave reviews and tells the story of a young black artist who connects with a rich white art collector who becomes his sugar daddy.

Oh, and did we mention Harris did all this before he turned 30 and while he was still working on his M.F.A. in playwriting?

Why we’re proud: Harris isn’t afraid to address hot button issues head-on. His work directly confronts difficult topics like white supremacy, heterosexism, racism, and classism. And he isn’t worried about who he provokes or offends. His only concern is holding a mirror up to society and forcing people to look in a dramatic way.

“I don’t like to ask permission,” he told Vulture in March 2019. “I just like to do a thing. … I’m free. I’m going to do it.”

The significance of what he has accomplished isn’t lost of him either.

Speaking to the New York Times last November, Harris said, “It’s really humbling and feels crazy … I’m really excited that this gets to happen for a black queer person because it’s creating a new conversation about how big we can imagine.”

Not only does he challenge audiences to think more deeply about important issues that matter, but he serves as an inspiration for other black queer artists, both young and old, whose voices have yet to be heard.

Puerto Rico Governor Kills Anti-LGBTQ ‘Religious Freedom’ Bill Hours After Ricky Martin Denounces it in Open Letter

Puerto Rico Governor Kills Anti-LGBTQ ‘Religious Freedom’ Bill Hours After Ricky Martin Denounces it in Open Letter

Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rosselló told legislators to axe an anti-LGBTQ “religious freedom” bill hours after Ricky Martin published an open letter denouncing it.

Said Martin in the letter: “As a member of the LGBTT community, I join the constituency that affirms that there has never been a willingness among our LGBTT people to allow for the validation or legalization of discrimination against us. House Bill 2069, filed at the request of Governor Ricardo Rosselló and promoted by Representative Charbonier, achieve nothing more than opening the doors to hatred towards anyone who doesn’t share the same ideology, who simply belong to the LGBTT community, or who don’t  have the same color skin, amidst many other discriminatory measures. Authentic religious freedom calls for respecting everyone equally.”

Added Martin: “As a defender of human rights and a member of the LGBTT community, I am vehemently opposed to the proposed measure imposed upon us under the guise of religious freedom, which degrades us as a society and projects us to the world as a backwards country, unwilling to honor the basic constitutional right of individuality. This movement is not representative of the Puerto Rico that we all love, defend and hold so dear. We call on the Senate, the House and Governor Ricardo Rosselló to reject this effort, which is an open door to hatred and discrimination.”

Hours later the bill was axed.
