HRC NAMES ALPHONSO DAVID AS NEW PRESIDENT – THE CIVIL RIGHTS LAWYER AND LONGTIME LGBTQ ADVOCATE TAKES THE HELM LATER IN AUGUST:  David, who made history as the first openly gay counsel to the governor of New York and the state’s first deputy secretary and counsel for civil rights, will be the first civil rights lawyer and the first person of color to serve as HRC president in the organization’s nearly 40-year history. “At a time when LGBTQ people, women, people of color, immigrants and refugees, and so many others are being confronted with daily attacks on our most basic rights, Alphonso is the fierce, compassionate, and strategic leader HRC and our broader movement for equality needs,” said HRC Board Foundation Board Chair Deb Taft. David has played an integral role in:

  •  Securing marriage equality in New York;
  •  Banning the abusive practice of “conversion therapy” on minors;
  •  Establishing non-discrimination protections for transgender New Yorkers;
  •  Expanding Medicaid coverage to cover transition-related care;
  • Making it easier to amend gender markers on birth certificates; and
  • Enacting policies and regulations to support people living with HIV, driving new diagnoses to an all-time low statewide.

Prior to his work for New York State, David served as a staff attorney at Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund. More from Associated Press, Advocate, Washington Blade and HRC

GLAAD Releases New Media Guide: Covering 2020: A Tip Sheet for Journalists Covering the 2020 Election

GLAAD Releases New Media Guide: Covering 2020: A Tip Sheet for Journalists Covering the 2020 Election

GLAAD’s 2020 tip sheet aims to help inform media about top issues important for LGBTQ voters

With LGBTQ acceptance waning amongst younger Americans, covering LGBTQ issues is essential in the 2020 election conversation

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, ahead of this week’s first 2020 Presidential Debates, today announced the first in a series of tip sheets for journalists covering the 2020 election aimed at informing national and political media about the top issues facing LGBTQ Americans. GLAAD’s guide, “Covering 2020: Vol. 1, A Tip Sheet for Journalists Covering the 2020 Election,” covers LGBTQ-specific topics like banning so-called conversion therapy practices while also focusing on the bread-and-butter issues that directly impact all voters, including LGBTQ families.

GLAAD’s “Covering 2020” tip sheet release comes in the wake of a new survey from GLAAD and The Harris Poll released yesterday, which found that LGBTQ acceptance fell amongst younger American voters ages 18-34, falling to a 45% level of “comfort” compared to 53% just last year.

“As we see acceptance of LGBTQ people wane within younger generations, it’s imperative for the media to cover our issues and perspectives and ask all 2020 presidential candidates the tough questions about what their plan is to help the LGBTQ community feel safe and accepted in the United States,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “We have a great deal yet to accomplish in order to achieve full equality and acceptance, and it’s critical that candidates in both parties and in the media address the issues that matter and not erase LGBTQ people from the 2020 narrative.”

GLAAD’s “Covering 2020: Vol. 1, A Tip Sheet for Journalists Covering the 2020 Election

GLAAD urges the media to use its “Covering 2020” tip sheet as a compass for covering LGBTQ-specific issues that matter to LGBTQ Americans. From the horrific violence transgender women of color face to the growing movement of LGBTQ organizations and allies demanding additional nondiscrimination protections for LGBTQ Americans, such as the Equality Act, the media have a responsibility to not just tell these stories but demand answers from elected leaders who wish to be in the Oval Office come January 2021.

So far under his presidency, President Trump and his administration have been responsible for issuing more than 115 attacks against LGBTQ Americans in policy and rhetoric since taking office in 2017. The entire list of the Trump Administration’s anti-LGBTQ actions, which include Trump’s ban on allowing transgender Americans from enlisting in our nation’s armed forces to opposing the Equality Act, can be found by visiting GLAAD’s Trump Accountability Project at www.glaad.org/trump.

Lawrence O’Donnell Rips Lindsey Graham, Donald Jr., and Trump Over Response to Rape Allegations: ‘That’s a Rapist’s Answer’ — WATCH

Lawrence O’Donnell Rips Lindsey Graham, Donald Jr., and Trump Over Response to Rape Allegations: ‘That’s a Rapist’s Answer’ — WATCH

Lawrence O’Donnell blasted Lindsey Graham, Donald Trump Jr., and the president over their defense of Trump Sr. amid the latest rape allegations from E. Jean Carroll.

Senator Lindsey Graham, R of SC, on the latest rape allegation against President Trump: “The president has denied it. I have no reason to .— you know, no. He’s denied it and that’s all I needed to hear.”

— Nicholas Fandos (@npfandos) June 25, 2019

Said Graham of Trump on Tuesday: “The president has denied it. That’s all I needed to hear.”

Said O’Donnell of Graham: “Like Donald Trump Jr before him, Lindsey Graham seems to have come to his public position of love of Donald Trump by working his way through his hatred and fear of Donald Trump.”

O’Donnell then moved on to Donald Jr.

Donald Trump Jr. also defended his father against the allegations, saying “Enough is enough with this bullshit!”

Enough is enough with this bullshit!

We all get it Media… you hate @realDonaldTrump, but giving every Avenatti like wacko a platform because they will say anything for press kills what little is left of your credibility.

Let him do his job. The results speak for themselves! t.co/xcTG60EJ94

— Donald Trump Jr. (@DonaldJTrumpJr) June 25, 2019

Asked O’Donnell: “Is that what Donald Trump Jr. said to his mother when his mother under oath accused his father of raping her? The very first person to accuse Donald Trump of rape was his first wife, Donald Trump Jr’s mother, and she did it under oath in deposition. She said Donald Trump attacked her and ripped her hair out and raped her because he was angry that her plastic surgeon did a bad job on his hair.”

O’Donnell then went on to rip Trump for his statement when asked if he raped Carroll: “She’s not my type.”

Said O’Donnell: “That’s the number one thing that came to his mind. The number one thing was not, ‘I’ve never raped anyone and would never rape anyone.’ The number one thing was, ‘She’s not my type.’ That answer doesn’t prove that Donald Trump is a rapist, but that is a rapist’s answer. A rapist might think that’s a good answer. And it’s an answer Donald Trump has used before.”
