Minneapolis gay bar owner says Jewish people ‘must be eliminated from existence’

gay bar
This is not a shot of the gay bar in question

Cheers was the name of a gay bar set to open soon in Minneapolis, Minnesota. But it might never see a single customer now that its owners anti-Semitic social media posts have caused an uproar.

Emad Abed, the bar’s owner, had his previous anti-Semitic posts shared online. In them, he claimed that the “Jew-nited States of America” is controlled by “a handful” of “zionist Jews” and that “all the world’s problems are caused by Israelis & Jews.”

In one particularly odious post, he wrote (with typos):

“Did you know Israel & it’s people must be eliminated from existence. They are like cancer, Europe got rid of this disease in World War One & Two by moving this disease to ‘PALESTINE’. Now as Palestinians we are stuck with this horrible sh*t until we eliminate them from existence.”

The bar was originally planning on opening this last Friday, according to its now-defunct GoFundMe page. But since Abed’s posts have circulated online, it has also deactivated its Facebook page and a local group called “Queers Against Cheers” has organized an upcoming protest.

On its Facebook event page, Queers Against Cheers wrote, “Let’s demonstrate the revolutionary spirit of Stonewall with a good old-fashioned sidewalk picket. We’re gonna show this dangerous bigot what happens when you try to come into our community to make a buck while degrading us. Hell to the no.”

However, since it seems like the bar’s opening may not actually happen now, the protest has been postponed until the fate of the bar becomes clear.

Queers Against Cheers wrote, “This event will be postponed indefinitely. It is NOT canceled. That is because if Abed attempts to open Cheers or any other business in any location, we will be ready. Watching. Waiting. He will not earn a penny from the queer community nor anyone else. Any opening will be met with protest which will sustain a boycott.”

The group also said that if Abed tries to open the bar as a non-gay music venue, it will alert musicians about the owner’s past posts.

In a response to critics of his anti-Semitic posts, Abed reportedly wrote:

“This community is a joke. We don’t want their business or support. They can take their money to the Saloon & Gay 90. Without this group commenting on this post we will do big business and we will be the number one gay bar in town Without all the stupid losers commenting on this post (Facebook user) Andy Birkey can take his post and shuv it up his gay *ss. ?? this group here they are all racist, prejudice, biased and discriminatory, that’s why they are not welcome in my bar. My bar will still be number one without them and without their money.”

Surely he’s trolling the entire community, right? You couldn’t invent a more cartoonish villain.

Indianapolis’ Cathedral High School Fires Gay Teacher to Save Itself from Being Axed by Catholic Church

Indianapolis’ Cathedral High School Fires Gay Teacher to Save Itself from Being Axed by Catholic Church

Indianapolis Archbishop Charles Thompson

Indianapolis’ Cathedral High School fired a gay teacher this week in order to protect its Catholic identity just days after the Indianapolis Archdiocese cut ties with another school, Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, which refused to fire a gay teacher.

The school wrote about its decision in an open letter from Cathedral’s board Chairman Matt Cohoat and President Rob Bridges, which read, in part: “It is Archbishop Thompson’s responsibility to oversee faith and morals as related to Catholic identity within the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Archbishop Thompson made it clear that Cathedral’s continued employment of a teacher in a public, same-sex marriage would result in our forfeiting our Catholic identity due to our employment of an individual living in contradiction to Catholic teaching on marriage. If this were to happen, Cathedral would lose the ability to celebrate the Sacraments as we have in the past 100 years with our students and community. Additionally, we would lose the privilege of reserving the Blessed Sacrament in our chapel’s tabernacle, we could no longer refer to Cathedral as a Catholic school, our diocesan priests would no longer be permitted to serve on our Board of Directors, and we would lose our affiliation with The Brothers of Holy Cross. Furthermore, Cathedral would lose its 501(c)(3) status thus rendering Cathedral unable to operate as a nonprofit school.”

Instead, news leaked out slowly. “Everyone seemed to be focusing more on clothes, nails, hair and the other aspects of the traditional female corporate uniform than they might have on a less consequential day,” Flitter writes. “It didn’t read as shallow; it was just the easiest way to connect with Ms. DuVally, to convey warmth and support.” Said DVally:  “I’ve been hugging a lot of people. Before I decided to come out, I don’t think I had ever hugged anyone at work.” Read the full piece here.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg Faces Town Hall Outraged Over South Bend Police Shooting of Black Man: WATCH

Mayor Pete Buttigieg Faces Town Hall Outraged Over South Bend Police Shooting of Black Man: WATCH

Mayor Pete Buttigieg left the campaign trail again over the weekend to face constituents in South Bend outraged over the fatal shooting of a black man by a police officer.

According to the South Bend Tribune, Sgt. Ryan O’Neill, a white officer, shot Eric Logan, an African-American man, in the parking lot of an apartment complex responding to a call that someone was breaking in to vehicles. According to O’Neill, he discovered Logan with his legs halfway out of a vehicle. Upon approaching the vehicle, he says Logan lunged at him with a raised knife. The officer shot Logan twice in the abdomen. He was transported to the hospital in a police car. The officer’s body camera was not on, nor was the cruiser’s dash cam, because O’Neill had not activated his emergency lights.

Buttigieg has been criticized for not bringing enough diversity to the police force in South Bend. In remarks over the weekend, he admitted that the city’s body camera initiative had failed.

Watching this Town Hall on the police shooting in SB reminds that presidential races are a series of tests. Some, like debates, you can anticipate Others you cannot. @PeteButtigieg faces one of those unanticipated tests now. Thru it, we will learn more about him.

— David Axelrod (@davidaxelrod) June 23, 2019

The South Bend Tribune reports: ‘Many made sure their voices were heard, often shouting over the mayor’s answers, calling him a liar or demanding that Ruszkowski be fired. When the crowd was asked to hold its anger, Komaneach Wheeler stood up and shouted “A mother of injustice cannot hold her anger!” Some of the questions were pointed squarely at Buttigieg, whose run for president has put the Logan shooting and ensuing reaction in the national spotlight. “How can we trust this process?” Blu Casey, a local activist, asked the mayor. “How are we supposed to trust you?” Buttigieg at one point admitted that he had failed to bring greater diversity to the Police Department, where 5% of the officers are African-American, though he said it wasn’t for a lack of effort as he mentioned some initiatives the city undertook or is exploring.’

Said Buttigieg after the event: “You can sense the pain not only around this incident … and not only around our city but what’s happening everywhere, when it comes to the disempowerment that so many black Americans have felt in relation to the police. When you lead a city and it’s hurting, you take that on board all the time, but you especially take that on board at a time like this.”

“This problem has to get solved in my lifetime,” Buttigieg added. “I don’t know of a person or a city that has solved it, but I know that if we do not solve it in my lifetime, it will sink America. And if nothing else, I hope people know that I am motivated, not out of some theoretical concern or some political imperative, but as somebody whose city is hurting. What I hope African Americans watching this see is that our city is facing this. We’re not running away from it. This isn’t theoretical for us, this isn’t something being debated in Washington. This is our problem, as it is a problem in so many places. And we are on the front lines of it. And we’re doing everything we know how.”

Let’s support the Equality Act and put an end to LGBTQ+ discrimination.

We believe everyone has the right to live how they want to live and love who they want to love. Imagine if holding hands in public, going to your favorite local bar, getting a job, or leasing an apartment was denied to you because of your sexual orientation. It’s easy to forget that the things we take for granted as rights are not certainties, nor are they permanent.

Until we live in a world where sexual orientation is not a crime, where all relationships are recognized and respected, and where all genders are treated as equal—we must act.

The Equality Act, which has passed the House and now needs to be brought to the Senate for a vote, is a bill that would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, and protect many other essential civil rights.

“Discrimination in any form violates the fundamental values that drive Tinder. We believe everyone should have equal rights, and by calling on our millions of users to show their support and take action, we hope to make real change for the LGBTQ+ community,” said Elie Seidman, CEO of Tinder.
