You’ll never guess the queer director replacing Bryan Singer on ‘Red Sonja’

Producers of the upcoming Red Sonja reboot have fired embattled director Bryan Singer and announced his replacement: out-queer director Jill Soloway.

Soloway, best known for creating the show Transparent, came out as non-binary queer in 2017. Prior to their work on the series, Soloway also wrote and produced the acclaimed HBO series Six Feet Under.

Singer landed the job helming Red Sonja despite his firing from Bohemian Rhapsody late in shooting and several allegations of sexual misconduct. Millennium Films, the production company with the rights to Red Sonja, initially stood by Singer, though as more allegations of misconduct surfaced, they removed him from his role.

Soloway’s debut feature Afternoon Delight premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim and nabbed Soloway the coveted Directing Award at the festival. Millennium Films has announced they will take on writing duties as well as directing chores on the big budget action film.

Created by Roy Thomas, Red Sonja spun off from his popular Conan the Barbarian stories and first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1973. After her family is murdered, a goddess bestows incredible fighting skills on Sonja, on the condition that she swear off sex with men unless they defeat her in combat.

The character previously received the cinematic treatment in 1985 with actress Bridgitte Nielsen playing the title role.

Elton John Receives France’s Highest Civilian Honor: WATCH

Elton John received the Legion d’Honneur, France’s highest civilian honor, from French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday.

Macron praised Elton for his work on AIDS and urged the international community to push harder to end the epidemic, calling on world leaders to donate to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.

Said Elton: “Like music, the fight against AIDS has been my passion for many many years. And like music this fight reminds me every day of the extraordinary power of the human spirit. And that things that bind us are stronger than those that divide us. It is this magical human spirit I will carry with me as a proud member of the Legion d’Honneur.”

Longest-married same-sex couple in the U.S. shares their story on the eve of Stonewall 50

Michael McConnell and Jack Baker

When Michael McConnell and Jack Baker were married in 1970, the American Psychiatric Association still considered homosexuality a “mental disorder.” It wasn’t until three years after their union that the APA finally removed it from the official list of disorders.

Of course, same-sex marriage was nowhere close to being legalized. But Jack, who was an aspiring lawyer at the time, was determined. So he found a legal loophole that allowed for the couple to be legally wed.

In 2016, the guys wrote about their incredible story in The Wedding Heard ‘Round The World. Now, on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, they sat down with Global News to talk about their 48 years together and what it’s like being the longest-married same-sex couple in the United States at such a historic time during the LGBTQ movement.

Watch.

In honor of Pride month, Grammy award-winning duo A Great Big World has released a new cover of Greg Holden’s song, “Boys in the Street.” Listen to the exclusive cover below:

A Great Big World’s Chad King, who is openly gay, spoke about why they chose to record this song and why it was so significant this Pride month:

“I remember being on tour with Greg Holden. And during a show he played a song he wrote called ‘Boys In The Street’ and I started crying immediately from it. It resonated so deeply with me. And for the rest of the tour I sat side stage every night when Greg would play that song.

For me, the song reminds me of the shame I felt for over a decade of my life growing up. A time in my life when I was terrified to be my true self. A time when the thought of my true self disgusted me so much I developed a deep sense of homophobia.

And that last verse is a reminder of the moment I finally let go of that shame. ‘He’s finally realized I’m not lying. We sit in silence but we’re smiling. Because for once we are not fighting.’ It’s the moment, for me as a gay man, after you’ve come out and you stop holding on so tight to the idea of what you SHOULD be, and let yourself be exactly as you are.

I feel so pulled to share this with the world because I know this experience is shared with so many others. I hope you enjoy this one. And Greg, thank you so much from the bottom of my heart.”
