More lurid details emerge regarding that Jerry Falwell Jr. x-rated photos scandal

Both the Miami Herald and The New York Times published reports this week with lurid new details regarding the Jerry Falwell Jr. x-rated photos scandal that broke earlier this year.

Quick backstory: In May, Reuters reported that the evangelical leader and antigay activist contacted Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s longtime personal attorney, for help regarding an “embarrassing personal matter” involving him, his wife, Becki Tilley, and their 20-something pool boy, Giancarlo Granda, in 2016.

Rumor had it, Granda had somehow gotten his hands on some scandalous photos of Falwell and was blackmailing him to the tune of $1.8 million, and Falwell needed Cohen’s assistance in navigating the situation.

Naturally, as soon as the story broke, Falwell denied the whole thing, telling Fox News, “There are no compromising or embarrassing photos of me,” and rushing out a statement saying he had never employed Michael Cohen to represent him in any legal matters.

Within a week or so, the story died. The end.

And then this week came the sequel!

On Wednesday the Miami Herald confirmed that the photos do, indeed, exist and that they feature Falwell’s wife “in various stages of undress.”

There are three photos total. Two of them were taken at the family’s farm in Virginia and the third was taken at a vacation lodge in Islamorada, Florida.

So when Falwell said, “There are no compromising or embarrassing photos of me,” he wasn’t really lying. The photos aren’t of him, they’re of his wife.

Now onto the pool boy.

Falwell and Granda

According to the Herald, the Falwells met Granda while vacationing at the Fontainebleau hotel in Miami Beach, where he was working as a pool boy.

Talking Points Memo reports:

The couple was reportedly impressed with Granda’s ambition to get into Florida real estate, a friend told the Times. Soon Granda was embarking on hiking and skiing trips with the couple and flying on their private jet. At some point after their initial meeting, Granda traveled to the Cheeca Lodge with the Falwells, according to the Miami Herald, the same resort where Tilley is reportedly seen in at least one of the photographs.

As the relationship deepened, the Falwells agreed to lend Granda $4.7 million so he could purchase a youth hostel, which also included a restaurant and a liquor store, in the Miami area.

Because lending $4.7 million to some random young man you and your wife met at a hotel is a totally normal thing, right?

Anyway, Granda purchased the hostel and everything appeared to fine for a while. Granda upgraded the property and co-managed it with another business partner. But then something–it’s not clear what–happened, and his relationship with the Falwells soured.

Then, according the New York Times, someone–possibly (read: probably) Granda–got ahold of “personal” photos of Tilley and used them to try and blackmail the Falwell, which is when Michael Cohen purportedly got involved.

Falwell hired him to make the whole thing go away.

According to the Times, in a recorded phone call between Cohen and comedian Tom Arnold, Cohen said: “There’s a bunch of photographs, personal photographs, that somehow the guy ended up getting–whether it was off of Jerry’s phone or somehow maybe it got AirDropped or whatever the hell the whole thing was.”

Cohen didn’t say who “the guy” was, but he did reference a “pool boy” later in the call.

He went on to tell Arnold he was going to pay “the guy” off but ultimately didn’t have to because he ended up just deleting them freely on his own.

For his part, Granda has denied knowing anything about anything, releasing a statement in May saying he had “no idea about the alleged ‘personal photographs’” of Falwell and that he definitely never tried blackmailing the evangelical leader.

Clearly, there are still a lot of missing pieces to this puzzle. But we’re sure it will all come together eventually.

HRC’s Welcoming Schools Hosts Annual National Facilitator Training

HRC was proud to host nearly two dozen educators and leaders from around the country for its annual Welcoming Schools National Facilitator Training. The training provides already highly-skilled facilitators l practice in delivering Welcoming Schools professional development across the country.

“We have amazing facilitators from across the country who have joined us for four days learning how to facilitate our Welcoming Schools modules to educators and other youth-serving professionals across the country,” said Welcoming Schools Director Johanna Eager.

This year marked the first time HRC Foundation’s Welcoming School is partnering on the training with the National Education Association, Equality Florida, SMYAL DC, the National SEED Project and the Utah State Board of Education, all of which sent representatives to become Welcoming Schools facilitators in their respective organizations.

“Everywhere I go throughout the state, educators are asking for tools and answers to their questions,” said participant Holly Bell, Equity Specialist with the Utah State Board of Education. “I’m hoping that through this training, I can provide more answers to help educators feel more comfortable addressing the real issues happening in their schools and the real diversity in their student populations.”

Over four days with HRC, participants covered the Welcoming Schools training modules and shared strategies and lessons learned from their work back home. For training participant Ez Rodríguez, the Safe and Healthy Schools Coordinator for Equality Florida – Pinellas, having the opportunity to learn from other educators was one of the most impactful parts of the week.

“Sometimes when we feel like we’re working in a silo in our own area, it’s really great to come together like this and have community,” Rodríguez said. “We’re learning together and can use the data and information that we have to make programming to support all of our LGBTQ youth.”

While Wanda Newman, a member volunteer facilitator of several curricula within the National Education Association’s Human and Civil Rights Department, has been a strong advocate for inclusive schools for many years, this training is an important part of her work to support students and educators alike.

“Our elementary school kids come from homes and communities where they see these issues every day — but we just don’t talk about it at school. We hide it under a rug,” Newman said.

“But now it’s time for us to bring these issues out into the open to try to eliminate some of the inequalities that we suffer in this world,” Newman continued. “It’s about making a fair and a safe haven for everyone who’s in public education.”

HRC Foundation’s Welcoming Schools is the nation’s premier professional development program providing training and resources to elementary school educators to welcome diverse families; create LGBTQ and gender-inclusive schools; prevent bias-based bullying; and support transgender and non-binary students.

Katya talks sex dreams, shapeshifting & her one-woman show. What more could you want?

Katya talks sex dreams, shapeshifting & her one-woman show. What more could you want?

Her one-woman show may be called “Help Me, I’m Dying,” but Katya Zamolodchikova, aka Katya, aka Brian McCook is doing just fine, thank you.

The RuPaul‘s Drag Race season 7 and Drag Race All-Stars season 2 standout has had a wild ride, from coming up in the Boston drag scene to finding a massive audience through TV and an ever-expanding one with the success UNHhhh, her web series with Trixie Matell. UNHhhh was later picked up by Vice for television as The Trixie and Katya Show for one season, and now the pair are back to producing UNHhhh.

Along the way, McCook took time off from the series, and from drag, to focus on mental health, and his willingness to be open about the process was a welcomed dose of honest realness.

It’s easy to scroll through Instagram and convince yourself that people are living the ‘dream,’ but we all have work to do throughout our lives. As queer people, some of that work can be especially challenging to unravel.

The good news? Katya is back and on a world tour, baby! “Help Me, I’m Dying” is set to make its way across Europe, Canada and the US. Head here for tickets and info.

Queerty’s Dan Tracer caught up with Katya to talk about dreams, drag names, shapeshifting, and more.

Hi Katya! Good morning–is it morning where you are?

Yeah, I’m in bed still.

Oh wow, that’s actually the perfect location for my first question. As Katya, part of the gig is you have to be so extroverted out in public, but you also seem like an ‘inner world’ queen, too. What are your dreams like?

[Laughs]

It’s going to be that kind of an interview.

OK perfect. Actually last night I had sleep paralysis! Do you know what that is?

That’s like when you consciously wake up but your body is completely inaccessible.

I got it a lot as a kid. I’d start to fall asleep and then I’d feel like I’m being attacked. The one that happened last night, I was on my side and I felt like there were two people, one on my back and one facing me, that were trying to attack and I was trying to scream “Help!” And I couldn’t get anything out of my mouth.

Oh that’s terrifying.

It’s horrible, yeah. But there were two sleep monsters this time. Usually, there’s only one.

Have you ever lucid dreamed?

Yes. Yes!

What’s that like for you? I have too, I’m obsessed with lucid dreaming.

Yeah it’s really cool. It invariably goes sexual.

Yeah?

Because I’m in a dream and I can do whatever I want.

Right, you have that moment where you’re like, “Oh, anything’s possible?!” Mine’s always flying. I’ll think, “Oh I can do anything? I can fly!” And then I’ll float up and get so excited that I wake up.

[Laughs] Oh that’s funny.

So in dream world or in real world, if you could choose between invisibility or shapeshifting as a power, which one would you go for?

Oh shapeshifting for sure.

I mean you kind of already are a shapeshifter.

Right but it would be so much easier to just do it at the drop of a hat.

Oh god, yeah, that would save you several years of your life. And plausible scenarios, if a UFO came down right now, and some goopy alien prince discreetly took you aside, and you know, offered you some tea, was very nice to you, and then gave you the chance to leave, right now, no time to tie up loose ends, no goodbyes, would you go?

[Pause] Yep.

Yeah, that’s fair. And if he said you could make one phone call before you left, who would you call?

I’d call my mom. Or… maybe Barak Obama.

Oh! [Laughs] I sort of assumed you’d have to have the person’s phone number already, but that wasn’t part of the question. I would love to hear that conversation, you, on the line with President Obama, just before your interstellar departure. But leaving Barry out of the picture, you’re close with your family, yeah?

Yeah they’re amazing.

So they do know you’re a drag queen?

Nope. They think I work for UPS.

Your secret’s safe with us.

I have a really wonderful family, an older brother and a younger sister. They’re great.

Has your older brother ever tried on one of your wigs?

Well we used to have wig parties.

Oh!

And he just had a child. So I’m an uncle now, and I’m looking forward to procuring some child wigs.

What names did you cycle through before becoming hermetically sealed to Katya?

Gosh I can’t even remember… There was Sigourney Beaver. She was in the mix at some point.

Stop it. The name I’ve been floating for years is So-horny Beaver.

Ohh that’s like a double-whammy.

And run us through the characters in your one-woman show, Help Me, I’m Dying. It’s a one-woman show, but you come out in multiple characters. Katya is there but she doesn’t snag all the stage time. Who are the other featured players?

So there’s Katya the Russian character, so I go through her origin story, and then I come out as another character called Trish, who’s like a junkie/townie from the suburbs of Boston. And then I come out as me, like, without any character, just me in drag, which is slightly confusing.

Which of those three is the most comfortable for you?

Probably the Russian one. I just get into the accent and the origin story, which changes all the time. And I love that about it. It’s like, “Now I’m going to tell the truth,” and it’s never the truth.

I was lucky to have seen the show at the ACE Theater in Los Angeles back in March, which featured Trish in the most bizarre and brilliant physical comedy crowd-play I could ever imagine. For people reading this, you brought an audience member up onto the stage, sat him in a chair and crawled all over him, creating what I can only describe as some kind of kinetic, living, comedy sculpture. Has it changed or evolved as you’ve been touring?

Yeah, it changes all the time. In Singapore, I actually had another performer come up who I used to perform with in Boston, join me on stage, and we did a duet — we did Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion’s “Tell Him,” which is a song about a woman in love — she’s so in love with this guy but she’s too afraid to let him know how she feels, and the audience member we brought up was really not up for it. He was this straight dude who was probably dragged there by his girlfriend, and the song is really long, so he was just tortured for probably like, ten minutes. It was hysterical.

And did the audience love that or was it uncomfortable?

Oh they loved it.

That sounds right.

Yeah it was amazing to watch and probably harrowing for him to experience.

But maybe, ultimately, a good experience for him?

Yeah, or maybe not!

Or not! And so you’re touring now, you have quite an ambitious schedule ahead of you, and I strongly encourage folks to make it out to your gigs — how does the tour life treat you?

It hasn’t been so bad! And we’re actually on a bus starting next month, which I’m very excited about.

And I see you have a show in New York during World Pride, are you even ready for that much queerness?

I don’t think so.

They say 4.5 million people are expected to descend upon the city.

That’s too much gay, I think I’m going to be homophobic by the end of that.

And the reason it’s this massive confluence is it’s the 50th anniversary of Stonewall, and here at Queerty, we’re doing our Pride50 series honoring 50 LGBTQ trailblazers. We’ve been asking people where they see the movement headed in the next 50 years. What do you think Pride100 will look like?

Well, it’ll probably look like Atlantis because we’re going to be underwater. But one of the things I find encouraging is that young people these days, their conception of sexuality is much more fluid and less defined, which I really like. On the one hand, Gay Pride is great, but I also love this kind of like… ‘it doesn’t matter’ sort of attitude about it. You’re interested in who you’re interested in, it’s the blurring of the boundaries of sexual identity.

Identity changes. I think it would be better if there were more consensus on larger, broader issues like compassion, non-violence.

That sounds pretty good to me. Now one last question, a really important one. There is this theory that when the Big Bang happened, it actually created our reality and a second mirror reality which is just like ours except time moves in reverse. So I want to know… what is your drag name in the mirror reality?

Ohh… in the Benjamin Button one. Oh gosh. Sharon Stone.

Sharon Stone.

Sharon Stone, yeah. Just like the actress.

Oh because I guess she wouldn’t really exist as “Sharon Stone” in that universe.

No, she’d be something else.

So you’d just be Sharon Stone.

I’d just be Sharon Stone with a dick and that would be the huge gag in Basic Instinct.

Hello! That’s a great place to leave off, thanks!

Anti-Gay Australian Rugby Superstar Raises $460K in GoFundMe Money Beg for Defense of His Hateful Religious Views

Fired rugby superstar Israel Folau has raised nearly half a million dollars on a GoFundMe campaign after begging supporters to fund his legal defense. Folau, who is hoping to make $3 million on the GoFundMe, is also suing Rugby Australia for $10 million.

In April, Rugby Australia said it was terminating Folau’s contract after the player posted a meme to Instagram that said Hell awaits all homosexuals. Folau challenged the firing and the “code of conduct” panel was assembled.

Those that are living in Sin will end up in Hell unless you repent. Jesus Christ loves you and is giving you time to turn away from your sin and come to him. _______________ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these , adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:19‭-‬21 KJV _______________ Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 2:38 KJV _______________ And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all

A post shared by Israel Folau (@izzyfolau) on

Said Rugby Australia at the time: “Rugby Australia and the New South Wales Rugby Union have made repeated attempts to contact Israel both directly and via his representatives since 6.30pm on Wednesday, and at this point he has failed to communicate directly with either organisation. Whilst Israel is entitled to his religious beliefs, the way in which he has expressed these beliefs is inconsistent with the values of the sport. We want to make it clear that he does not speak for the game with his recent social media posts.”

Said Folau in his GoFundMe message: “I believe that sharing the Bible is an act of love and compassion. I know some people do not like or believe in the Bible. Indeed, what makes our country so wonderful is that we have such a diverse community made up of so many different cultures and values. But my faith defines me as a person. I do not believe that it is fair or right that I be punished for my religious beliefs.  Sadly, after I uploaded the messages from the Bible, my employers, Rugby Australia and Rugby NSW, tore up my employment contract. As a result, I have lost my job, my livelihood, and the ability to play for my country. It looks like I will never be allowed to play rugby in this country again.”

You may recall that Folau was nearly expelled from the sport in 2018 after a series of similar homophobic actions.

Folau, a devout Christian raised as a Mormon who converted to the Assemblies of God fellowship with his family in 2011, made headlines in September 2017 during Australia’s debate over same-sex marriage, when he tweeted, “I love and respect all people for who they are and their opinions. but personally, I will not support gay marriage.”

One year ago in April 2018, Folau replied to a follower in an Instagram post who asked, “what was gods plan for gay people?”

In the comments section of the post, Folau, who plays for New South Wales Waratahs, replied, “HELL.. Unless they repent of their sins and turn to God.”

Rugby Australia and the New South Wales Waratahs, for which Folau plays, said they would seek an explanation from Folau and denounced the player.

Rugby Australia declined to punish Folau, though its inclusion policy states: “Rugby has and must continue to be a sport where players, officials, volunteers, supporters and administrators have the right and freedom to participate regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race or religion and without fear of exclusion. There is no place for homophobia or any form of discrimination in our game and our actions and words both on and off the field must reflect this.”

Then, one month after coming under scrutiny, Folau tweeted an anti-gay video.

The video featured a sermon by evangelical preacher David Wilkerson and footage of a Pride march where Christian street preachers were being protested, and a clip of the White House lit in rainbow colors against narration that said, “Now is the time to get right with God because this generation has lost the fear of God. There’s no fear of God left in the land.”

Folau also said he’d rather walk away from rugby than defy the Bible.

Join HRC in Stopping a HHS Proposal That Would Rip Away LGBTQ Health Care

A new proposal at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) seeks to strip away explicit health care protections on the basis of gender identity, effectively targeting transgender and gender non-conforming people’s access to critical care.

Erasing these protections is not only discriminatory, but against the public health and the mission of HHS. Join HRC in flooding HHS with comments TODAY.

Here are a few reasons we need to shut this proposal down for GOOD:

  • Studies have shown that 56% of lesbian, gay, and bisexual patients and 70% of trans patients have experienced discrimination from a health care provider. This discrimination takes many forms, each painful — some life-threatening.
  • Instances of harsh language or treatment severely undermine care, while the denial or delay of treatment can lead to long-term health problems or death. In fact, nearly one-third of trans people report being denied care because of their gender identity.
  • The explicit protections under section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) have been a powerful tool in combating discrimination against trans and gender non-conforming people.

Write your comment and tell HHS discrimination is NOT OK!
