Inclusive games to watch out for from E3 2019 and beyond

E3

Entertainment Software Association

E3, the gaming industry’s biggest annual consumer-facing event, descended upon Los Angeles this week for publishers and developers to show off their newest and greatest upcoming games. This time of year is a draw for all game enthusiasts, but LGBTQ gamers like myself have a particular interest to see how games are evolving and becoming more inclusive. While the industry still has a long way to go, there’s plenty for us to get excited about over the next few months. So, whether you’ve been following the recent E3 news or not, here’s a round-up of some LGBTQ-inclusive games we’re excited about.

First on the list is The Sims 4, a game widely known for its LGBTQ inclusivity. The Sims series has featured same-sex relationships going all the way back to the original in 2000, and in 2016, GLAAD partnered with Electronic Arts to bring transgender and gender-expansive characters to the game. This year, The Sims 4 is becoming even more inclusive, as EA partnered with the It Gets Better Project to bring a collection of Pride-themed items to the game. In a video at EA PLAY (EA’s pre-E3 weekend event), YouTube creator and The Sims fan Joey Graceffa revealed the new content, which will include Pride clothing and a gender-neutral bathroom door.

Sir Hammerlock in Borderlands 3

Borderlands 3 is the next big game to watch. Fans of the series know it as one of the most inclusive in all of gaming, featuring several LGBTQ characters and even a playable lesbian character—Athena—in Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. Sir Hammerlock, a canonically gay character who first appeared in Borderlands 2, is confirmed to be returning in Borderlands 3, and there’s no doubt the upcoming game will have far more inclusivity in store.

Next on the list is The Elder Scrolls Online, this year’s recipient of the inaugural GLAAD Media Award in the Outstanding Video Game category. The popular MMORPG recently launched its newest expansion, Elsweyr, and teased more upcoming content at Bethesda’s E3 press conference. The developers have promised even more LGBTQ-inclusive characters and storylines, and we’re excited to see what this future content brings.

Keep an eye on The Outer Worlds, a forthcoming sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment. While we haven’t seen confirmation that the game will include LGBTQ characters and storylines, we have good reason to believe that it will. The game is co-directed by the venerated, out gay game designer Tim Cain, whose previous work—from Fallout 2 to Pillars of Eternity—stands out for its LGBTQ inclusivity. And Obsidian Entertainment’s previous game—Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire—was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award this year.

We’re also closely following a pair of newly revealed games from Ubisoft. Gods & Monsters is an upcoming Greek mythology-infused action-adventure game from the same team that brought us Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, also a GLAAD Media Award nominee. Watch Dogs Legion is an ambitious open-world game that promises the ability to play as any character that exists in the game’s futuristic London setting. Ubisoft’s E3 presentation showcased a range of diverse playable characters, and given the history of inclusivity in the Watch Dogs series, we expect that LGBTQ characters will be among them in the final version of the game.

Finally, we’re compelled to mention The Last of Us Part II even though it did not make an appearance at E3 this year (Sony, the game’s publisher, skipped out). The game, which will feature Ellie as the first canonically gay protagonist to lead a full-length AAA game, wowed audiences last year with an extended trailer that included a memorable kiss between Ellie and her love interest Dina. No release date has been announced, but we expect to hear more about this widely anticipated title in the coming months.

Cop caught on camera calling gay people “freaks” and “animals” who should be “put to death”

Cop caught on camera calling gay people “freaks” and “animals” who should be “put to death”

Grayson Fritts is a deputy with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office in Knoxville, Tennessee. He also moonlights as a pastor at All Scripture Baptist Church in Knoxville, where he recently gave a fiery sermon about the evils of homosexuality.

In the sermon, which was delivered on the first Sunday of Pride month and then uploaded to Facebook, Fritts called LGBTQ people “f*gs,” “freaks,” and “animals” and said it was the duty of police officers like himself to enforce the homophobic teachings outlined in the Bible, including the one that says gay people should be “put to death.”

“Here’s how it should work,” Fritts ranted. “We go out and we enforce the laws, because the Bible says the powers that be are ordained of God, and God has instilled the power of civil government to send the police, in 2019, out to these LGBT freaks and arrest them.”

He continued: “Have a trial for them, and if they are convicted, then they are to be put to death. Do you understand that? It’s a capital crime to be carried out by our government.”

Fritts went on to say police should ambush Pride parades because they could roundup large swaths of LGBTQ people all at once.

“All the Pride parades, man, hey call the riot teams, we got a bunch of ’em, get the patty wagon out here, we got a bunch of ’em going to jail, we got a bunch of them we’re gonna get convicted because they’ve got their Pride junk on and they’re professing what they are, they’re a filthy animal!”

Then came the kicker: “After this onslaught, where the government’s arresting them, and carrying out God’s laws … they’re all dead!”

A spokesperson for the Knox County District Attorney told local media this week that its office had launched an investigation into the matter.

“We are looking into it and will respond accordingly,” said Knox County District Attorney General Charme Allen. “As District Attorney, I have dedicated my career to the belief that justice is blind and that all people are entitled to equal protection of the law. I always have, and always will prosecute fairly and justly, based upon the law and the evidence, without prejudice, bias, or discrimination of any kind.”

Meanwhile, Knox County Sheriff Tom Spangler said Grayson Fritts, who has been with the department for roughly 20 years, has requested early retirement and is no longer on active duty.

“Detective Fritts turned in his request for The Knox County Voluntary Workforce Reduction Buy Out approximately two weeks ago,” Spangler says. “I accepted his request. Detective Fritts is no longer on active duty with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, he is currently on paid sick leave until the effective date of the workforce reduction which will be July 19, 2019.”

He continued, “I want to be very clear that it is my responsibility to ensure equal protection to all citizens of Knox County, Tennessee under the law, my oath and the United States Constitution without discrimination or hesitation. Rest assured that I have and will continue to do so.”

‘Masterpiece Cakeshop’ Baker Hit with 3rd Discrimination Lawsuit for Refusing Transgender Woman — WATCH

‘Masterpiece Cakeshop’ Baker Hit with 3rd Discrimination Lawsuit for Refusing Transgender Woman — WATCH

Anti-gay baker Jack Phillips, owner of Masterpiece Cakeshop.

A Denver woman is suing Masterpiece Cakeshop and its anti-LGBTQ baker Jack Phillips for discrimination. Denver-based attorney Autumn Scardina, who has sued Phillips once before, says that the baker will not sell her a cake because she is transgender. SCOTUS ruled for Phillips in Masterpiece Cakeshop v Colorado Civil Rights Commission in June 2018.

The NYDN reports: ‘In the newest complaint, she claims Phillips refused to sell her a birthday cake “because she is transgender, despite repeatedly advertising that they would sell birthday cakes to the general public, including LGBT individuals.” The cake she wanted to order was blue on the outside and pink on the inside to celebrate her gender transition. But when she called the shop, she was told that they didn’t make cakes for “sex changes.” In her second lawsuit, Scardina claims “continued discrimination against the LGBT community in violation of Colorado’s Anti-Discrimination Act and the Colorado Consumer Protection Act.”’

How trans filmmaker Silas Howard made it to the big time to make shows about us

How trans filmmaker Silas Howard made it to the big time to make shows about us

Silas Howard with Indya Moore

Name: Silas Howard

Who He Is: Director

What He’s Contributed: Howard grew up in Vermont before moving to San Francisco, where he began exploring the arts scene, eventually playing guitar for noted queer rock group Tribe 8. It was there he met his frequent collaborator Harry Dodge, and the two opened gallery together.

Howard found his calling with his directorial debut By Hook or By Crook, co-written with Dodge. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival. By Hook or By Crook would go on to play festivals around the world, and pick up top honors at Outfest in 2001.

Fresh from his success, Howard threw himself headlong into directing short films, music videos and episodes of popular TV series like This is Us and The Fosters. He made history in 2015 when he became the first transgender director to helm an episode of Transparent. He’s also lent his talents to Pose and the forthcoming Netflix revival of Tales of the City. In 2018, he also returned to feature films with A Kid Like Jake. Starring Jim Parsons, Claire Danes, and Octavia Spencer, the movie deals with loving parents trying to cope with their child coming out as transgender…as a toddler.

Why We’re Proud: Howard’s talent and visibility have helped raise the bar and break down barriers for transgender directors everywhere. For that matter, his work on TransparentPose, A Kid Like Jake and Tales of the City has provided a valuable contribution to the ever-enriching tapestry of LGBTQ stories in film and television.

As he told ScreenCrush:

A lot of my work centers around trans and gender nonconforming – or really, centers around stories where the characters happen to be that. First, it’s about stories. And I’ve been very fortunate with TV to be able to work on Transparent and The FostersFaking It and I’m on Pose right now. So I’m working with incredible groundbreaking storylines around LGBTQ characters. I’m just so grateful because I’ve done it on my own for so long and now to see that land on such a wider platform, it’s important for people to be able to access it.

I really want room for the ambiguity. We live in a culture that’s so polarized, I just thought, “Oh my god, to protect this space where it’s not yet labeled but open.” I’m glad that it resonated. I think it was great that this was such a queer helmed project and that they brought me on as a director. Not to make it sound like that, but brought on someone who’s trans or gender nonconforming to tell this story, I think it’s important. Because I can kind of go into the messy areas, even places that made me uncomfortable because I knew where we were going. It felt like that ability to go into the messy areas was opening up a conversation in a way that a message movie would not. I didn’t want a message; I just think it’s hard to do the right thing and know what the right thing is.

What should Pride look like at 100?

When Pride turns 100, I hope we will be telling centered stories with the understanding that representation is the start, not the end, of our battle. Fifty years from now, I hope we will have learned to honor and celebrate those who are most vulnerable and often unrecognized in our communities, whose lives are driven by the fight for justice and civil rights on the ground. –Silas Howard

Wrote Alexa Abraxas on a GoFundMe page created to help pay for funeral expenses: “Today we lost an amazing human being! We lost a brother, a son, a best friend and most of all a sweet soul. Jules had an infectious personality, it was so easy to love being around him. No matter what he always made you feel loved and like family and now he’s gone. Jules was loved by so many and will remain in our heart forever. He had made his imprint and impact on this world and our community. Please help us raise money for his cremation and memorial and it is needed. Every little bit helps and is much appreciated.  Thank you so much for your donation and your kind words about this sweet angel.”
