In the backward town of Taber, Alberta, there was a petition just recently to NOT raise the Pride Flag this year, and so sometimes you think you’ve made progress, but then you have to reassess.

I heard about an interesting history exhibit in the beautiful Lougheed House, a vital, historic home / museum funded by the province, and went the other day. There were many interesting artifacts and newspaper clippings and a lot of fascinating information. Alberta entered the modern age a bit late in the game in terms of human rights, and so LGBT Albertans lived in uncertainty for a long time, and many experienced discrimination and worse without recourse. I was very fortunate to have survived that era without any direct damage, and lived an open life since the early 1980’s. The lesson is clear: If we don’t understand and learn from history, we will make the same mistakes over and over again…
