390 Prosecutors Sign Statement Saying Trump Would Be Indicted if He Weren’t President

If Trump were not president he’d be indicted for obstruction of justice, according to at least 390 prosecutors who signed a statement released Monday.

Said the prosecutors: “We are former federal prosecutors. We served under both Republican and Democratic administrations at different levels of the federal system: as line attorneys, supervisors, special prosecutors, United States Attorneys, and senior officials at the Department of Justice. The offices in which we served were small, medium, and large; urban, suburban, and rural; and located in all parts of our country. Each of us believes that the conduct of President Trump described in Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report would, in the case of any other person not covered by the Office of Legal Counsel policy against indicting a sitting President, result in multiple felony charges for obstruction of justice.”

The prosecutors cite:

  • “The President’s efforts to fire Mueller and to falsify evidence about that effort;
  • The President’s efforts to limit the scope of Mueller’s investigation to exclude his conduct; and
  • The President’s efforts to prevent witnesses from cooperating with investigators probing him and his campaign.”

They add: “As former federal prosecutors, we recognize that prosecuting obstruction of justice cases is critical because unchecked obstruction — which allows intentional interference with criminal investigations to go unpunished — puts our whole system of justice at risk. We believe strongly that, but for the OLC memo, the overwhelming weight of professional judgment would come down in favor of prosecution for the conduct outlined in the Mueller Report.”

Recently obtained documents shed light on the time Mayor Pete Buttigieg spent serving in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom after 9/11.

The Hill reports: ‘According to the documents, Buttigieg served in the Afghanistan Threat Finance Cell (ATFC) in Kabul, placing him in “an imminent danger pay area” from late March to mid-September 2014, while the then-32-year old was still serving his first term as mayor. The ATFC “identifies and disrupts Taliban, Al-Qaida and other insurgent financial support networks in Afghanistan.” Buttigieg represented ATFC at “high level briefings,” the documents say, and “coordinated intelligence sharing and targeting deconfliction” methods with multiple organizations.’

The documents do not detail any of the dozens of times Buttigieg has said he went “outside the wire” on patrol.

Buttigieg mentioned those during his campaign launch in South Bend, the NYT reported: ‘Mr. Buttigieg took a seven-month leave during his first mayoral term to serve as a Navy Reserves intelligence officer in Afghanistan. He mentioned “the 119 trips I took outside the wire” guarding or driving a vehicle. The men and women he escorted “cared about whether my M-4 was locked and loaded,’’ he said, “not whether I was going home to a girlfriend or a boyfriend.’’’

FROM THE BANGOR DAILY NEWS ED BOARD– “MAINE PROTECTIONS FROM DISCRIMINATION SHOULD BE NATIONWIDE”: “We built on significant, if unfinished reforms in 1964 with the Civil Rights Act — enshrining federal protections from discrimination for people on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. But even that landmark legislation falls short in protecting some groups today,” the Board writes. The law lacks clear, comprehensive protections for sexual orientation and gender identity. The Board argues eloquently for passage of the federal Equality Act — which is supported by Maine’s congressional delegation. Read the full piece at The Bangor Daily News.

Richard Madden Doesn’t Believe Gay Roles Should Be Restricted to Gay Actors

Richard Madden Doesn’t Believe Gay Roles Should Be Restricted to Gay Actors

Richard Madden as John Reid in Rocketman.

Richard Madden, who plays Elton John’s manager and lover John Reid in the upcoming biopic Rocketman, said he doesn’t believe gay roles should be restricted to gay actors.

Said Madden to The Guardian: “It’s a really terrible route to go down if we start restricting people’s casting based on their personal lives. We have to focus more on diversity and having everyone represented, but I’m also a firm believer in the best actor for the part.”

Taron Egerton, who plays Elton in the film, recently weighed in on the topic, telling UK’s Attitude magazine: “It’s easy for me to sit here as a white, heterosexual man and say I should be able to play a part I want. But I completely understand why a gay actor would feel that this is an opportunity for which they would be better suited. The way I feel about it is that Elton asked me to play him in a movie about his life. I am proud and privileged to be playing this person who happens to be gay. I want to live in a world where people are excited about playing people who are different from themselves. I believe that there is something inclusive and progressive about that.”
