Gus Kenworthy leaves little to the imagination… for a good cause
Well, you can’t fault the guy for not knowing his audience.
Days ahead of the eighteenth annual AIDS/LifeCycle, the June bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles that raises an impressive amount of money for HIV/AIDS services, Gus Kenworthy has made one final fundraising push.
And do you hear that? That’s the sound of nobody complaining about his tactics.
First, the out Olympian posted a photo that understandably grabbed gay Twitter’s attention:
just another headless torso for your grid pic.twitter.com/Y2v8Scxv7H
— Gus Kenworthy (@guskenworthy) May 29, 2019
And shortly after:
k now that I’ve gotten your attention please donate to my AIDS/ Life Cycle campaign! ???? t.co/rw55Ophoc6
— Gus Kenworthy (@guskenworthy) May 29, 2019
As of this posting, Kenworthy has personally raised an incredible $210K for the cause, and we can’t imagine this last-minute photo push hurt his donation pacing.
The ride will kick off June 2 and arrive just in time for Los Angeles Pride. In 2018, the grand fundraising total was $16.6 million. Well OK!
Reaction to Gus’ photo was as to be expected:

Trump Issues Laughable Tweet Recognizing ‘Pride Month’ as His Administration Continues to Attack LGBTQ People
Donald Trump on Friday recognized LGBT Pride Month in a pair of tweets while his administrations continues to attack LGBTQ people from all angles, much of it in the guise of “religious freedom.” Here’s a handy timeline.
Tweeted Trump: “As we celebrate LGBT Pride Month and recognize the outstanding contributions LGBT people have made to our great Nation, let us also stand in solidarity with the many LGBT people who live in dozens of countries worldwide that punish, imprison, or even execute individuals……..on the basis of their sexual orientation. My Administration has launched a global campaign to decriminalize homosexuality and invite all nations to join us in this effort!”

48 AND COUNTING. Democrats calling for impeachment.
CHICAGO. Police have begun to release Jussie Smollett’s case files.
POORLY CONCEIVED. NYT bans journalists from “partisan” shows: ‘It’s not just Maddow. The Times has come to “prefer,” as sources put it, that its reporters steer clear of any cable-news shows that the masthead perceives as too partisan, and managers have lately been advising people not to go on what they see as highly opinionated programs. It’s not clear how many shows fall under that umbrella in the eyes of Times brass, but two others that definitely do are Lawrence O’Donnell’s and Don Lemon’s, according to people familiar with management’s thinking. Hannity’s or Tucker Carlson’s shows would likewise make the cut, but it’s not like Times reporters ever do those anyway. ‘
RIP. Gay Kenyan writer Binyavanga Wainaina remembered: “How I would like people to remember Binyavanga? I think would be encapsulated by just a very brief thought – Ken’s life was a seed and he planted that seed not for himself but for others, just listening to the number of artists who found their voice because Ken believed in them, gave them a platform, to speak in many different fields, be it musically and other types of artistic impressions, and that’s how I would like him to be remembered, and that is what life is about.”
PROGRESS BAR. Chicago gay bar faces backlash after announcing rap music is banned. “This is f—ing racist as f—,” one person wrote on Twitter. “Progress is frequented by [people of color] and banning rap is basically saying ‘f— you’ to these patrons.”
NORTH KOREA. Diplomat reportedly executed after failure of summit between Kim Jong Un and Trump. “Kim Hyok-chol was investigated and executed at Mirim airport with four foreign ministry officials in March,” an unnamed North Korea source said, according to the newspaper, adding that they were charged with spying for the US.
SCRIPPS. National Spelling Bee ends in historic 8-way tie. ‘Texas seventh-grader Rohan Raja became the eighth and final winner of the National Spelling Bee’s 92nd annual competition on Thursday after a correct recital of the word “odylic”, earning a wild round of applause from the audience.
EAGLE CREEK SALOON. Art piece remembers San Francisco’s first black-owned gay bar: ‘The original Eagle Creek Saloon didn’t look anything like the new one. When Barnette took over the bar, he knocked down a good chunk of the front wall and replaced it with a big picture window to let the light in. The bar itself was made of dark wood and so were the floors. The ceilings were high. There was a neon sign there, too — “Eagle Creek Saloon” — but it wasn’t pink like the one his daughter had installed in this art exhibit.’
JERUSALEM. First openly gay Orthodox rabbi ordained: “Daniel Landes, a prominent American-Israeli rabbi, granted semichah, Hebrew for ordination, to Daniel Atwood alongside a mixed group of men and women at the Jerusalem Theater on Sunday evening during a ceremony attended by more than 200 guests. Atwood was informed earlier this year that he would not be ordained after completing his studies at New York’s Yeshivat Chovevei Torah despite the school previously saying it would ordain him.”

NEW YORK. State weighs ban on gay and trans panic defenses: ‘New York could become just the fifth state in the union to ban gay and trans panic defenses in court if legislation in Albany becomes law by the end of June. But as so often occurs, what would seem like legislation set to sail to easy passage in a state like New York may be undone by the typical bickering and dysfunction that define the Albany process.’
EUROPE. Where it stands on gay marriage and civil unions.
BILLY PORTER. Advice for his 16-year-old self. “Extract yourself from the people who don’t know how to love you. Extract yourself from anything that’s toxic. Change the narrative of, ‘I need the love of people, my mother, my father, my family to exist on the planet’. No! “

Colorado’s Gay Governor Signs Ban on Conversion Therapy for Minors
Jared Polis also signed a bill making it easier to update gender markers on birth certificates.

Out Colorado governor Jared Polis signs new LGBTQ protections into law
Colorado governor Jared Polis, the nation’s first openly gay governor, just signed extra protections for LGBTQ people into law.
The first-term Democrat signed two bills into law. The first bans so-called “conversion therapy,” making Colorado the 18th state to ban the practice of trying to change sexual orientation. The medical field has widely attacked the practice as extremely harmful and ineffective.
Related: Colorado will become the 16th state to ban conversion therapy
The second bill allows for an easier change of gender listings on government documents. The move will benefit transgender and non-binary people to change their gender without having to go through surgical procedures, provide a doctor’s note, or make public declarations of name and gender changes. Both bills passed Colorado’s legislature with bipartisan support.
Fellow lawmakers praised the move. Senator Steve Fenberg, who co-sponsored the bills, called the move “a huge step, first and foremost for LGBT youth. He also noted that states have a greater responsibility to protect queer citizens in the era of Trump. “[It’s] a big deal because at the federal level we’re seeing rollbacks and a lot of the progress that was made under the Obama administration dissolve,” he said following the signing ceremony. “This responsibility to protect LGBT youth and to further the cause of ensuring that there’s fairness and nondiscrimination now really lies to the states.”
Protecting LGBTQ Youth and Families from Harmful Legislation
Against the backdrop of National Foster Care Month, HRC and our partners have been hard at work to fight back against harmful child welfare-related legislation in states around the country.
These “licenses to discriminate” in the provision of child welfare services seek to enshrine discrimination into law by allowing taxpayer-funded government contractors to refuse to work with LGBTQ individuals, same-sex families or other qualified prospective parents who don’t meet a contractor’s religious criteria.
From organizing local volunteers to mobilize in support of LGBTQ youth to delivering testimony in the state capitol, HRC was proud to work with partners to fight off Tennessee’s attempt to pass such a dangerous bill.
Wrapped into Tennessee’s “Slate of Hate,” HB 836 / SB 1304 would have allowed state contractors who provide taxpayer-funded adoption and foster care services to refuse to make child placements with qualified, loving families if the family doesn’t share all of the agency’s religious beliefs.
Under these proposals, state-licensed child-placing agencies would be allowed to disregard the best interest of children and turn away qualified Tennesseans seeking to care for a child in need.
Thankfully none of these dangerous bills passed into law this year.
Additionally, HRC was disappointed when, in February of this year, Oklahoma lawmakers voted against HB 2533, a bill that would have partially repealed SB 1140, the state’s existing license to discriminate in taxpayer-funded child welfare services. HB 2533 would have limited SB 1140’s discriminatory scope to private service providers who do not receive state or federal taxpayer funds.
Stories like that of Lupe Ortiz-Tovar underscore the importance of this work.
“As a child, I think you remember, kind of, the honeymoon phase of going into a family, but it’s never yours,” she told HRC. “It’s really like you’re a visitor in someone else’s home, and you don’t know how long that’s going to last.”
These discriminatory bills would only exacerbate the challenges LGBTQ young people face in care and further restrict the pool of prospective parents, making it harder for all children to find their forever families.
These attacks are especially cruel, given that research consistently shows that LGBTQ youth are overrepresented in the foster care system.
Many of these young people enter foster care after experiencing family rejection because of their LGBTQ status and they continue to be vulnerable to discrimination and mistreatment while in care.
It is vital to speak out for LGBTQ youth and families not just this National Foster Care Month, but all year long. HRC’s All Children – All Families project helps agencies improve their services for LGBTQ youth in foster care.
If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a foster parent and supporting LGBTQ youth in care, check out HRC’s resources about foster parenting. This month be sure to also take time to watch “The F Word,” a powerful series chronicling the story of a queer California couple looking to adopt a child from foster care.
