Pastor Charged After Incapacitating Two Men with Meth and GHB and Raping Them

Pastor Charged After Incapacitating Two Men with Meth and GHB and Raping Them

Christopher Cox / Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office

A Michigan pastor has been charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of possession with intent to deliver meth after he allegedly lured two men to his home and office then drugged and raped them.

One 19-year-old homeless man says Pastor Christopher Cox of Long Lake Church in Traverse City contacted him on Facebook and lured him to his office where he was given meth and GHB, Click on Detroit reports: “The 19-year-old told police he was incapacitated by the drugs and that Cox sexually assaulted him in the office. He was taken to Munson Medical Center, where evidence supported his claims that he was sexually assaulted, officials said.”

The Traverse City Record-Eagle adds: “A second man told troopers that Cox gave him meth sometime in October 2018 at Cox’s office in Traverse City — Moeggenberg did not immediately know the location. Like the account given by the other man, Cox gave the man meth and waited until he was high, drunk and incapacitated before assaulting him, despite the man’s efforts to fight him off, records show. The man told Michigan State Police troopers that Cox stopped several hours later, claiming he had to get back to his wife and child.”

HRC Mourns Loss of Ashanti Carmon

HRC Mourns Loss of Ashanti Carmon

HRC is deeply saddened by the loss of Ashanti Carmon, a Black transgender woman killed in Prince George’s County, Maryland, on March 30.

TransGriot’s Monica Roberts reports that Carmon was shot multiple times in Fairmount Heights and was pronounced dead at the scene. Earline Budd, a long time DC resident and staff member at HIPS, shared that other transgender people have been assaulted and attacked at this same place in the past. No arrests have been made. The investigation will be handled by the Prince George’s County Police.

“Until I leave this Earth, I’m going to continue on loving her in my heart, body, and soul,” said Philip Williams, Carmon’s fiance. “She did not deserve to leave this Earth so early, especially in the way that she went out. She did not deserve that.”

Williams said that they had gone out to dinner and a movie the night before she was killed. He said he couldn’t imagine why someone would want to hurt her.

Since 2013, HRC has tracked 134 incidents of fatal violence against transgender and non-binary people. Of these, 82 have been victims of gun violence. In November, HRC Foundation released “A National Epidemic: Fatal Anti-Transgender Violence in America in 2018,” a heartbreaking report honoring the trans people killed ahead of Transgender Day of Remembrance and detailing the contributing and motivating factors that lead to this tragic violence.

Carmon was killed the day before International Transgender Day of Visibility, which is a day dedicated to celebrating and highlighting the experiences of transgender people around the globe.

This juxtaposition is salient. While visibility is a powerful tool to advance transgender rights, for too many, it can also entail discrimination, poverty and violence. We all must work to dismantle the systemic racism, sexism, biphobia, transphobia, homophobia and discrimination that impacts transgender people — and that particularly targets Black transgender women — to create a world in which trans people can live authentically and openly without fear of violence.

9,451. The number of lies Trump has told in 801 days (though no doubt it’s higher than that).

ELECTORAL COLLEGE. Democrats to introduce legislation to abolish it: “The amendment is being led by Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) and initially will be supported by Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin of Illinois, Dianne Feinstein of California and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, who is running for president. It will be introduced on Tuesday, according to a person familiar with the plans.”

THE ETERNALS. More on the possibility of a gay character…Hercules?

HRC GALA. Cory Booker and Kamala Harris stand up for equality: ‘Both candidates offered a riff on their core campaign themes while addressing the Human Rights Campaign’s downtown Los Angeles gala — Booker, the New Jersey senator, extolling the power of love and hope, California Sen. Harris promising a return to truth and justice — but with specific nods to the struggles faced by gay Americans and targeted swipes at President Trump.’

SARAH PALIN. On not being invited to McCain’s funeral: “They didn’t have to embarrass me.”

ITALY. Thousands march against, anti-gay, anti-choice World Congress of Families: “A colourful procession of feminists and LGBT activists from several European countries marched through the city centre to state their opposition to the ultra-conservative policies of the movement. Activists came from as far afield as Britain, Croatia, Germany, Poland and Switzerland to protest.”

DAVID BLAINE. Superstar illusionist under investigation for sexual assault.

CHARLES RHINES. A jury may have sentenced a man to death because he’s gay, and now the Supreme Court could hear his appeal.

XTINA. Christina Aguilera missed the HRC dinner but sent a message in her place: “I have found the most solace and unimaginable strength in my friends who identify as queer, and I have crawled out of some of my darkest times thanks to the small group of people I surround myself with…”

FRANK BRUNI. The best restaurant if you’re over 50. “James Beard famously told people that when he was stopped in airports and asked what his favorite restaurant was, he answered: ‘It’s the same as yours,’” Meyer recalled. “‘It’s the one that loves me the most.’”

YOU’RE ALL DISGUSTING. P!nk shuts down comments on Instagram, lectures trolls who commented on her son.

AMY KLOBUCHAR. The former prosecutor and presidential hopeful on the Jussie Smollett case: “You have an obligation, when you represent the public, to explain what you’re doing. They made a decision to bring those charges and they made a decision to make those charges public, then they need to describe why they decided to go the other way. They didn’t do that.”

MIAMI BEACH GAY PRIDE. Detective Juan Sanchez chosen as Grand Marshall: ‘Organizers said Sanchez was chosen because of all he does for the LGBT community. “Juan is an incredible role model for our youth,” said Scott Bader with Miami Beach Pride. “He’s worked consistently with Pridelines to make sure that homeless youth are connected with resources they need and he’s generally just a wonderful man.”’

Lenten Devotional: Finding Peace

Lenten Devotional: Finding Peace

People — including the LGBTQ faithful — look to their faith as a source of guidance and inspiration. Throughout the Lenten season, HRC will share devotionals from faith leaders, LGBTQ people and allies. The campaign seeks to create an environment in which LGBTQ people of faith and their allies can practice the spiritual traditions of their faith in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

The Lenten season marks the days leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and subsequent resurrection. For Christians, the resurrection is both a celebration of life and a reminder that people continue to suffer, including members of the LGBTQ community.

It is important to note that the season of Lent is observed by many Christian denominations and may not resonate with all readers. With this series, HRC seeks to amplify and honor the voices of LGBTQ-affirming faith leaders in many religious traditions.

Today’s post is a reflection from Khizr Khan, a patriotic American Muslim and Gold Star Father, from Charlottesville, Virginia.

Assalamu alaikum – Peace be with you!

Great Lent is upon us once again, reminding us during this holy season to center the almighty God in our lives, in our hearts and in our minds.

The Qur’an also teaches us, “Those who have faith and whose hearts find peace in the remembrance of God – truly it is in the remembrance of God that hearts find peace.” (Qur’ān 13:28)

In today’s political climate, with all the hot-button issues swirling around in the news, many of us are conditioned to distraction. Often, we forget to listen to one another. We forget to hold each other in our hearts as God commands us. The consequence is that we don’t find peace because we have forgotten to remember one another — thus forgetting to remember God.

Prophet Muhammad’s sayings (hadith in Arabic), validated by the one of the most distinguished ninth century Islamic scholars, Al-Bukhari, teach us we are all created in God’s image — and that image lies not in our race, religion, sex, national origin or color, not even in our sexual orientation or gender identity. Rather, that image lies in the vision of God’s love that elevates, connects and redeems human life irrespective of these classifications.

As people of faith, each of us has been distracted from God in some form throughout our lives. Yet, in the Qur’ān, God is referred to as “the Merciful” more than 200 times, a core truth of Islam. As we continue to embark on this Lenten season, let us humbly accept God’s mercy and recommit ourselves to loving one another with a love that proceeds from the heart.

May Allah, God of Abraham, bless us and bind us together with cords that cannot be broken. Help us become one in Your name. Ameen

The Lenten Devotional is a faith-driven resource that compiles meditations written by 47 faith leaders from across the U.S. This project and other public education work with faith leaders in HRC’s Project One America states and HRC’s Religion and Faith Program is made possible in part by the generous support of the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.
