Rejection 101: How to Break Up With Someone Like a Grown-up
Rejection – nobody wants to be on either side of it. Everyone knows it’s a horrible feeling to be rejected, but what people don’t talk about is how hard it is to be the one doing the rejecting. Having to break up with someone is all kinds of awkward, and because of this people have […]
PETE AND CHASTEN BUTTIGIEG. How they are working to lock up the LGBTQ vote: ‘Like President Barack Obama’s outreach to black voters in 2008 and Hillary Clinton’s appeals to women in 2016, Buttigieg’s campaign will seek to balance his ability to inspire a powerful group of potential supporters as a gay candidate with the risk of being seen as the gay candidate. But Buttigieg told reporters that embracing a group identity and embracing broader policy issues doesn’t have to be an either/or proposition’
LONDON. Man beaten, strangled, and dragged in homophobic attack: “The man, 36, was found with bleeding and bruising to the face near Blackheath Common following the attack by five men and possibly a woman. They hit him repeatedly and and held him by his neck, causing him to lose consciousness. He was then dragged along by his hood and hit his face on the pavement in Vanbrugh Road, Blackheath.
SHAWN MENDES. On his Calvin Klein underwear ad: It was “a goal of mine at the top of 2018. As much as it’s a stepping stone for me to play a stadium, it’s a huge moment for me to step in front of a camera and take my shirt off. I don’t see one being less meaningful than the other.”
SAVAGE LOVE. What to do when your small town hook-up always wants to wear a black ski mask: “He told you he wanted to wear the mask to preserve his anonymity + he sent you his real name + you found him on Instagram + he now knows you know who he is and what he looks like + he insists on wearing the ski mask when you f**k regardless = HE LIKES TO WEAR THAT F**KING SKI MASK.”
PERFECT CATCH OF THE DAY. Olly Alexander and this Rainbow flag.
SHARK SAVE OF THE DAY. Victoria Bay, George, South Africa. “In this video my friends and I came out of the water after a morning surf, then we noticed a baby shark struggling by the rocks. A group of us headed down to see what we could do to help the shark, with the help of the life guards that came along. After a few failed attempts to get the shark back out to sea from the rocks we decided to take the shark to a better location. We eventually got the shark back out to sea and saw it swim away :)”
Texas Rep. Julie Johnson Introduces Bill to Increase Access to Lifesaving HIV & AIDS Medications
Post submitted by Elisabeth Rutledge, HRC state legislative team consultant
On Tuesday, April 9, the Texas House Committee on Insurance held a hearing on HB 3058, a bill authored by Rep. Julie Johnson to eliminate a requirement for prior authorization of prescription medicines that treat HIV & AIDS. This bill would remove bureaucratic barriers between people living with HIV and access to the lifesaving medicines they need.
“Requiring prior authorization in treatment drugs for HIV & AIDS is a serious barrier to timely treatment for patents and is an adversary of Texas public health overall,” Rep. Johnson said in introducing the bill. “Eighty-five percent of physicians across the U.S. report that the prior authorization requirement is an interference in their continuity of care.”
For people living with HIV, timely treatment upon diagnosis and continuity of care are crucial because any delay accessing treatment — even a short delay — can trigger viral resistance. Once viral resistance occurs, the medication is rendered ineffective and the entire class of medications may no longer be an effective treatment option.
When health plan providers require prior authorization for these medicines, they not only put patients at risk but also dramatically increase public health risks and the overall cost of medical treatment.
While prior authorization requirements are designed to limit costs, in the case of HIV & AIDS, the cost of these medications is miniscule compared to the inability to access treatment. Patients living with HIV who are not on these treatments are able to transmit HIV more easily, which impacts not only the patient themselves but also public health.
“HRC is proud to support Rep. Johnson, a powerful advocate who is working tirelessly on behalf of her constituents, the LGBTQ community and all Texans,” HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse said. “This bill shows what a difference it can make to elect people like Rep. Johnson who understand and will address the challenges faced by LGBTQ Texans.”
Johnson worked with Dr. John Carlo, CEO of Prism Health North Texas, to craft this legislation with the goal of increasing access to these medicines and ultimately saving lives. Prism Health North Texas runs three non-profit health centers specializing in HIV treatment and prevention in North Texas.
First Ever Photos of a Black Hole; Pence’s Moon Shot; Headline Writers on High Alert
Scientists today announced today the successful capture of the first ever image of a black hole. The product of a vast international collaboration, the Event Horizon Telescope, “a planet-scale array of eight ground-based radio telescopes… — was designed” specifically for this purpose.
And it went something like this:
If you could fly past the black hole you would see things more clearly, but you would be at great risk of being pulled in. And, as many of us know from various fictional and documentary accounts, this strong gravitational pull is about as strong as it gets. Some might say “infinity” but that wouldn’t be exactly scientifically correct.
Under Bush and Obama, the US space program was not the field of dreams. They didn’t build it. We got an ill-conceived Mars shot, a clean-up of said Mars mission, along with distracting wars, recessions, and an ageing shuttle program started in 1981.
Last week, in spite of recent cuts and redirections of NASA budgets, Vice President Pence demanded that the agency up its game, saying 2028 was “just not good enough,” telling them it had to be by 2024 because, “we’re better than that”. Multiple reports from the speech in Alabama noted that this position and “encouragement” surprised everyone involved, that there were no resources or even back-up materials prepared as of yet, and noted that this new schedule would conveniently land on the moon in the final year of a two term Trump presidency. So the space program is once again the stuff of dreams.
Hubble and Event Horizon Telescopes Cause Massive Concern in News Rooms.
Just last month, Hubble announcements of massive storms on the iciest planets bolstered previous warnings to newsrooms and science beat reporters. First was last year’s announcement that scientists were reconsidering their previous lack of interest in Uranus and Neptune. And, by February there were reports of Auroras on the surface of Uranus, and then news of competing storms on both ice planets. Potentially more than just awkward. Newsrooms handled news blasts from uranus-focused researchers well, and everyone’s enjoyed the newfound fascination with Uranus. Until today…
Today the threat escalated. Event Horizon has taken journalists to the the highest threat level with a matrix of disastrous intersectional outcomes. Add to that the stress of the vaseline filtered images included with today’s release and i just don’t think this is “too soon”. To those serving on the front lines of this tense media situation, thank you for your service.
