Lenten Devotional: Trusting God this Easter

Lenten Devotional: Trusting God this Easter

People — including the LGBTQ faithful — look to their faith as a source of guidance and inspiration. Throughout the Lenten season, HRC will share devotionals from faith leaders, LGBTQ people and allies. The campaign seeks to create an environment in which LGBTQ people of faith and their allies can practice the spiritual traditions of their faith in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

The Lenten season marks the days leading up to Jesus’ crucifixion and subsequent resurrection. For Christians, the resurrection is both a celebration of life and a reminder that people continue to suffer, including members of the LGBTQ community.

Easter marks the end of that journey, and an awakening to new life as Christ himself rose from the dead.

It is important to note that the season of Lent is observed by many Christian denominations and may not resonate with all readers. With this series, HRC seeks to amplify and honor the voices of LGBTQ-affirming faith leaders in many religious traditions.

Today’s post is a reflection on Luke 24:1-12, and it comes from Susan Cottrell of FreedHearts, a national coalition of parents of LGBTQ children.

I love this Easter story. Here Jesus comes alive from the dead and appears to the women gathered at his tomb. These women know Jesus. They’ve spent time with him and they get him.

But the men dismiss their eyewitness accounts. They don’t trust the women’s lived experience with Jesus, true to the values of the society in which they were conditioned and live. But the women know what they know. — and they know a Jesus who loves and cares.

How often does our conditioning overwhelm our ability to see what is right in front of us? The U.S. has a history of this kind of dismissal — from redlining people of color out of certain neighborhoods; banishing LGBTQ people and families from churches and their communities; privileging dominant-narrative male voices in business, politics, healthcare, entertainment. These dismissals effectively dominate our collective story, and, oftentimes, these things are done in God’s name.

But marginalized people are like those women. We know what we know, and we know a Jesus who loves and cares.

Peter stepped outside his privilege to truly hear these women. He opened his mind enough to think, “This sounds like Jesus!” In so doing, he discovered a whole new Jesus and a way of seeing Jesus beyond what he already knew. He was the first man to reach the risen Jesus.

How radiant is the living Jesus to those who are willing to see beyond their limited understanding!

May those who love Jesus be open to the real Jesus as he reveals himself — beyond our boxes, beyond our conditioning, beyond simply going about our business as usual. May we discover a Jesus free, full and lovely—compassionate, caring and kind — the Jesus we see in the Gospels. That is a Jesus well worth discovering!

The Lenten Devotional is a faith-driven resource that compiles meditations written by 47 faith leaders from across the U.S. This project and other public education work with faith leaders in HRC’s Project One America states and HRC’s Religion and Faith Program is made possible in part by the generous support of the E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Foundation.

Stephen Colbert Mulls Over All the ‘Crazy Sh*t’ in the Mueller Report: WATCH

Stephen Colbert Mulls Over All the ‘Crazy Sh*t’ in the Mueller Report: WATCH

“I want you to know that today the Mueller Report was released, and I’m here to tell you you’re not crazy,” said Stephen Colbert at the opening of his Thursday night show.

Colbert launched some scathing commentary on William Barr’s pre-release press conference: “If you got nothing to hide, why do you have to set up the report first?”

“Barr really sounded like he was channeling the president,” Colbert said, ripping the attorney general for his explanation that what looks like obstruction was merely Trump lashing out because he was frustrated and upset over the investigation: “Wait, when did feelings become a get out of jail free card? (In lawyer voice) ‘Sure my client’s actions might look like arson, but might I remind you, he was feeling tense and who doesn’t relax in front of a roaring fire?’”

Colbert then pointed out that the report was delivered to Congress on CDs: “I’m disappointed. Everyone knows obstruction sounds more authentic on vinyl.”

One of the revelations in the redacted Mueller Report was Trump’s reaction when he heard from then Attorney General Jeff Sessions that a Special Counsel had been appointed to investigate him.

Said Trump, according to “Oh my God. This is terrible. This is the end of my presidency. I’m fucked.”

Quipped Colbert: “That’s actually what I said at the beginning of your presidency. … I’m guessing that’s now how an innocent person reacts.”

Colbert then pointed out that at his press conference, Barr “told a bald-faced lie” about Mueller’s reasoning for not making a call on whether Trump obstructed justice.

Barr also said that Mueller did not indicate that his purpose was to leave the decision to Congress, adding “I hope that was not his view.”

Added Colbert: “Oh I hope so, too. Because if he said that, and then you made the decision anyway, that would be, in the words of James Madison, from the Federalist Papers No. 62, ‘Super f**ked up.’ I mean it would really make Barr look like a feckless stooge if Mueller had written on page 220, ‘The conclusion that Congress may apply the obstruction laws to the President’s corrupt exercise of the powers of office accords with our constitutional system of checks and balances and the principle that no person is above the law.’”

Colbert came back after a break for more Mueller monologue.

He tackled the report’s assertion that Trump’s efforts to obstruct the investigation were unsuccessful because many people declined to carry out his requests.

Said Colbert: “It’s a shock to find out both which associates declined to carry out his orders, and what they declined to do. Like his former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, who did not deliver the president’s message to Attorney General Jeff Sessions that he should confine the Russia investigation to future election meddling only.”

More on Don McGahn, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Trump’s written responses to Mueller’s questions below.

“There was one common thread among Trump’s responses: he remembers nothing.”

Gay Journalist Shot Dead During Riots in Northern Ireland

Gay Journalist Shot Dead During Riots in Northern Ireland

Lyra McKee, a 29-year-old gay journalist and LGBT activist, was shot dead during riots in Northern Ireland on Thursday.

The Guardian reports: ‘Her home, she said, was strangled by the chains of its past and present. “It’s a place full of darkness and mysteries … sometimes, I love it and hate it in equal measure.” On Thursday night the 29-year-old became what is believed to be the first journalist killed in the UK in the line of duty since Martin O’Hagan was shot in 2001 in Lurgan, County Armagh. Police blamed her death on a suspected dissident republican who was firing at officers during riots in the Creggan area of Derry. It was a shocking end for a young talent who made her name with a blogpost about growing up gay in Belfast which went viral and launched an acclaimed but brief career as a chronicler of the Troubles.
