GOP Presidential Candidate William Weld’s Pro-LGBTQ Record Isolates Donald Trump as Lone Anti-LGBTQ Candidate

GOP Presidential Candidate William Weld’s Pro-LGBTQ Record Isolates Donald Trump as Lone Anti-LGBTQ Candidate

GLAAD CEO: “Weld can help usher in a new wave of acceptance for a political party that has been dominated by politicians who have fought against hard-won progress made by the LGBTQ community.”

President Trump becomes only nominee from a major political party to hold an anti-LGBTQ record

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today released the following backgrounder to the national media highlighting the pro-LGBTQ record of former Massachusetts Governor William Weld just after he announced his 2020 presidential campaign. Weld’s announcement now marks the first credible primary challenger to President Donald Trump, the most anti-LGBTQ United States President in recent memory.

Weld’s 2020 entry now makes President Donald Trump the only elected leader from a major political party to be fully anti-LGBTQ, lightning-speed progress from just a decade ago.

“Governor William Weld represents what is needed and has been missing within the Republican Party: a campaign message about acceptance for all marginalized communities, including LGBTQ people,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “Anti-LGBTQ activists have hijacked the Republican Party for far too long, and it’s past time that voices like Governor Weld’s enter the dialogue. Weld can help usher in a new wave of acceptance for a political party that has been dominated by politicians who have fought against hard-won progress made by the LGBTQ community.”

The Trump Administration has issued more than 100 attacks against LGBTQ Americans in policy or rhetoric since 2017. To see the entire list of attacks on Trump’s attacks on LGBTQ Americans and for more information on GLAAD’s Trump Accountability Project, go to www.glaad.org/trump

Touted his early leadership on LGBTQ rights: “In office, in my case, even though I was then a Republican and not a Libertarian, I was way out there by myself on gay and lesbian rights, starting my first month in office, in January 1991. And for 10 years, no one followed suit. I appointed the woman who wrote the decision holding equality of marriage as constitutionally compelled, which led to the Supreme Court case holding that.”

— Said “marriage equality is dictated by the due process clause and equal protection clause.”

— Created the Governor’s Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth.

— Has delivered homilies at multiple same-sex weddings, as early as 2004. “He could never ever understand why or how anyone could care that I was gay,” remembers [his former college roomate], who had Weld give the homily at his June 2004 wedding to Kevin Smith, a former Weld chief of staff. “And he could never understand how it was anyone else’s business but my own.”

— Signed an amicus brief calling on the Supreme Court to overturn Proposition 8.

— Supported the Obama administration’s guidance on trans bathroom access: “If bathroom access for transgender people rises to the status of a right that needs protection, then why not?”

HRC Announces Mayor Pete Buttigieg Will Keynote the 2019 Las Vegas Dinner

HRC Announces Mayor Pete Buttigieg Will Keynote the 2019 Las Vegas Dinner

Today, HRC announced that Pete Buttigieg, a trailblazer who made history in launching his presidential campaign, will speak at the HRC Las Vegas Dinner on Saturday, May 11. South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg is the first openly gay candidate to run for the Democratic presidential nomination.

“Mayor Pete Buttigieg is changing hearts and minds across America in his trailblazing campaign to be the Democratic Party’s first out nominee for President of the United States,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “As a visible and outspoken advocate for LGBTQ equality, Mayor Pete has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to our community and we are honored to welcome him to our Las Vegas Dinner.”

A longtime public servant, Pete Buttigieg has served as the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, since 2012. After coming out as gay in 2015, Buttigieg became the first openly LGBTQ executive in the state and the highest elected official in Indiana to come out. In late 2015, he was re-elected to his second term as mayor of South Bend with more than 80 percent of the vote. A champion of LGBTQ equality, Buttigieg helped lead the fight against then-Indiana governor Mike Pence’s efforts to license discrimination against LGBTQ Hoosiers in 2015. Buttigieg is an outspoken advocate of the Equality Act — critically important, bipartisan legislation that would finally provide clear protections against discrimination for LGBTQ people across the country. He is a graduate of Harvard University, a Rhodes Scholar and an Afghanistan war veteran.

Following the launch of Mayor Buttigieg’s exploratory committee in January, he made one of his first stops at the Human Rights Campaign HQ in Washington, D.C. to address and thank HRC staff, volunteers and members for the organization’s advocacy. Earlier this month, Pete’s husband Chasten Buttigieg, a former teacher and outspoken advocate for education and civil rights, spoke at the 2019 HRC Houston Dinner.

Set to take place at Caesars Palace, the 2019 HRC Las Vegas Dinner brings together HRC’s most active members and supporters in the Las Vegas area to raise crucial funds in the fight for LGBTQ equality. Additional special guests at the event will include Ally for Equality Award recipient Stephanie Stallworth of Cox Communications and Equality Leadership Award recipients the Pinocci-Wrightsman Family. Tickets and further information are available here.

Victory! American Museum of Natural History Cancels Event with Anti-LGBTQ President Jair Bolsonaro After GLAAD Speaks Out

Victory! American Museum of Natural History Cancels Event with Anti-LGBTQ President Jair Bolsonaro After GLAAD Speaks Out

GLAAD CEO: “…we hope the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce will follow suit and withdraw their award for an elected leader who is targeting LGBTQ Brazilians for unequal treatment under the law.”

Associated Press: “Natural History Museum backs out of event honoring Brazilian president after pressure from GLAAD, others”

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today hailed the American Museum of Natural History for canceling an upcoming event featuring Brazilian President and notorious anti-LGBTQ activist Jair Bolsonaro. The announcement came just hours after GLAAD joined environmental groups in calling on the Museum to revoke their invitation for the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce’s planned gala that would’ve honored Bolsonaro as its “Person of the Year” at the Museum. The Museum confirmed they canceled the event with an announcement on Twitter yesterday.

“The American Museum of Natural History has done the right thing by declining to host an event that features the anti-LGBTQ President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “His extremist voice has no place at one of New York City’s most beloved institutions. At GLAAD, we hope the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce will follow suit and withdraw their award for an elected leader who is targeting LGBTQ Brazilians for unequal treatment under the law.”

Brazilian President has a horrific and barbaric anti-LGBTQ record, and since his election last year, President Bolsonaro – like the Trump Administration – has systematically tried to erase LGBTQ families from the fabric of Brazil. Just recently, President Bolsonaro even praised the anti-LGBTQ efforts made by President Trump and his administration since taking office in 2017 – a total of 103 attacks on LGBTQ Americans overall.

  • Said he’d prefer his son die in an accident than be gay (Rough translation: “There are certain things that I say are as death. It would bring me disgust, would make me sad, and I even think that he, himself, would abandon me in that case. To me, it is death. And more: I’d rather he died in an accident than show up with some guy. To me, he really would have died.” Original interview, in Portuguese, can be found here: web.archive.org/web/20110709235317/http://playboy.abril.com.br/entretenimento/entrevista/jair-bolsonaro/

  • Claimed LGBT rights activists wants to recruit children for sex: “They want to reach our children in order to turn the children into gay adults to satisfy their sexuality in the future. So these are the fundamentalist homosexual groups that are trying to take over society.”
  • Said being gay is a “behavioral issue” inspired by “liberal habits” “drugs” and “women also working,” adding that is a young person starts hanging out with certain people with a certain behavior, he’ll adopt that sort of behavior. Slate of Hate Advances Through Tennessee Legislature

Slate of Hate Advances Through Tennessee Legislature

The Tennessee legislature is working to fast track and pass several anti-LGBTQ bills, including business license to discriminate, child welfare and anti-trans bills, known to advocates as the Slate of Hate.  With a number of bills having had significant movement in the House, bills are being scheduled in the Senate. These proposed measures will not only cost taxpayers, but will ultimately have a significant impact on the State of Tennessee.

The are four dangerous bills HRC is currently monitoring:

SB 1499, a bill to require the Attorney General to defend anti-transgender school policies, is scheduled for a hearing today in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Its companion bill, HB 1274, has already passed the House Judiciary and has now been scheduled in the House Finance Ways & Means Subcommittee on Wednesday, April 17. SB 1499 would require the Tennessee Attorney General to either pay for legal costs or itself defend discriminatory anti-transgender school policies – an obvious attempt to encourage school districts that want to deny transgender students access to the correct bathrooms and locker rooms in K-12 schools. In short, this bill would mandate that taxpayers foot the bill for schools determined to discriminate against transgender students in violation of federal civil rights law.

HB 1151, a discriminatory bill amending the state’s indecent exposure law, has passed the House and has passed first consideration in the Senate.  Though a House subcommittee amended the bill to remove some of the most harmful anti-transgender language, the bill still could put transgender and non-binary people at increased risk of harassment and entanglement with law enforcement simply for using restrooms and locker rooms consistent with their gender identity. The Senate companion, SB 1297, was similarly amended, and has passed the Senate Judiciary Committee and is currently in the Senate Calendar Committee to be scheduled for a floor vote.

HB 836, a bill that would create a license to discriminate in child welfare services, passed the House by a vote of 67-22, and has been received in the Senate on second reading.  HB 836 would allow state contractors who provide taxpayer-funded adoption and foster care services to refuse to make child placements with qualified, loving families if the family doesn’t share all of the agency’s religious beliefs. SB 1304, companion bill, has been reset for the last Senate Judiciary calendar. If SB 1304 is scheduled, this will put the license to discriminate in child welfare bill one-step closer to the governor’s desk. These proposals state-licensed child-placing agencies would be allowed to disregard the best interest of children and turn away qualified Tennesseans seeking to care for a child in need. This would include LGBTQ couples, interfaith couples, single parents, married couples in which one prospective parent has previously been divorced or other parents to whom the agency has a religious objection.

BREAKING: SB 364 REMOVED FROM CONSIDERATION! SB 364, a “business license to discriminate” bill, is scheduled for a hearing today, April 16, in the Senate State & Local Government Committee. The companion bill, HB 563, has already passed the House and is on second reading in the Senate. These bills would prohibit cities and state agencies from implementing policies that bar taxpayer funds from being used by businesses, organizations, contractors, and grantees to discriminate against LGBTQ people in employment policies.

HRC is proud to join with the Tennessee Equality Project to vigorously oppose bills that seek to discriminate against LGBTQ Tennesseans and their families. Text HRCTN to 472472 or visit hrc.im/HRCTN to stop this dangerous legislation from becoming law.
