Man convicted of hate crime for threat to kill gay man: ‘A Portland police investigation showed Smith approached two men sitting outside a residence on Aug. 13 to ask for a cigarette and started “using homophobic language and threatened to kill the men” when they didn’t respond, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office. The residence is part of a treatment community that involves people diagnosed with HIV or AIDS, and many of the people living there are gay, the District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.’

Brunei Must Immediately Rescind Barbaric Anti-LGBTQ Law—And the U.S. Must Act
HRC released the following statement as Brunei implemented a new law imposing barbaric punishments on LGBTQ people, including death by stoning, torture and whipping:
“The eyes of the world are on Brunei today, and we must all speak with one voice against this barbaric law that threatens LGBTQ people with death by stoning and torture,” said HRC Director of Global Partnerships Jean Freedberg. “Given the urgency of this situation, it is increasingly crucial that the United States show moral leadership and join the international community in speaking out against these human rights abuses. We need to seize this moment and demand that Brunei repeal this law without delay.”
The new measures mandate penalties such as floggings and prison for those convicted of engaging in consensual same-sex relations, and the possibility of death by stoning. This makes Brunei one of only a handful of countries in the world that impose the death penalty for consensual same-sex relations.
A small country with half a million people, Brunei is a wealthy state with riches derived from oil production. LGBTQ life in Brunei is severely restricted due to constraints imposed by anti-LGBTQ religious and social views. Working with The Brunei Project and other human rights advocates, HRC has been monitoring LGBTQ human rights issues in the country since 2014.
Over the last several weeks, HRC, international organizations and major celebrities have worked to bring attention to the regime responsible for this law and urged supporters of LGBTQ equality to be conscientious about where they spend their dollars, influence and visibility. HRC is continuing to drive awareness through an #EyesOnBrunei digital campaign.

A sickening attack on a transgender woman in a Paris crosswalk near a rally against Algeria’s president has gone viral, and she’s speaking out.
The BBC reports: “Julia, 31, was set upon on Sunday as she walked up steps at the metro station in the Place de la République. A big rally was taking place in the square against Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Algeria’s long-ruling 82-year-old president, who has since announced his resignation. Wearing a black-and-white striped blouse, Julia was blocked by protesters who taunted her in Arabic. One man ruffled her hair, while a girl draped in an Algerian flag came to try to help Julia. After the girl moved on, a man repeatedly punched Julia while another could be seen kicking at her.”
Julia spoke out about the attack to Paris media, telling Le Parisien: “One of them yelled at me, ‘you‘re a man!‘ I did not answer him and tried to pass. He shifted to block me again and said ‘I asked you a question, you answer! You will not pass!’ Another said to me ‘But you have breasts’ and touched my chest. I pushed him away and told him not to touch me. A third then exposed his penis and shook it and said that I was going to make him happy. Meanwhile, I had beer thrown on me.”
“The hardest thing is not the blows, it’s the humiliation,” she added.
She added: “The violence against this [transgender] community takes place every day. But some people won’t have the strength that I have and they’ll be destroyed by these attacks.”
