A Man Was Fired for Being Trans. This is Why We Need the Equality Act Now

Carter Brown was living the American dream. He not only excelled in his career, but bought a home and settled down with his wife and newborn daughter in Texas.

All of that changed in an instant when Brown was outed by his colleagues as transgender. What followed was months of discrimination and harassment by his peers, managerial staff and even human resources. Brown was ultimately fired simply because of who he is that is unacceptable. That’s why HRC is working to pass explicit, guaranteed federal protections for LGBTQ Americans across the country.

Brown is not alone. An estimated 50 percent of LGBTQ Americans live in states where they’re at risk of being fired, denied housing, or refused service because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The Equality Act would fix the patchwork of protections and finally add explicit and comprehensive federal LGBTQ non-discrimination protections under our nation’s existing civil rights laws, protecting LGBTQ workers like Brown. The Williams Institute released a new report highlighting the millions of LGBTQ Americans the bipartisan legislation would protect in employment, housing, education, credit, public accommodations and other key areas of life.

Following the historic election of a new pro-equality majority in Congress, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and leadership have made clear that passing the Equality Act is a top legislative priority this session. Earlier this week, Brown joined HRC on the Hill to meet with lawmakers to advocate for shift passage of the Equality Act.

Anti-Gay Flyers Target Lesbian Chicago Mayoral Candidate Lori Lightfoot with Lies and Hate: WATCH

Anti-Gay Flyers Target Lesbian Chicago Mayoral Candidate Lori Lightfoot with Lies and Hate: WATCH

Lori Lightfoot would make history as Chicago’s first black female mayor and the city’s first openly gay mayor should she be elected in the April2 run-off election.

This week, anti-gay flyers targeted Lightfoot outside black churches in the city, the Sun-Times reports.

The flyers feature photos of Lightfoot and her wife Amy Eshelman with the words, “The Gay Equality Act!!! It’s Our Turn” with another line that reads “The Feminist and Gay Movement Have Come Full Circle.”

They also proclaim: “ALL CONTRACTS, JOBS AND EMPLOYMENT NEWLY ASSIGNED EXCLUSIVELY TO GAY PEOPLE!”

On the back of the flyers are lies including: “With our people in City Hall, I promise to enforce the Gay Equality Act: All churches will abide by the gay marriage laws. All public restrooms will be gender-free. All Public Schools will teach Gay History by mandate. School Restrooms must be DE-SEGREGATED.”

Another false claim: “We would like to thank Rickey Hendon (Willie Wilson’s chief of staff) for introducing the Gay Equality Act in Springfield.”

Lightfoot denounced the flyer:

Gay Trump Supporter Michael Sanchez Was Paid $200K to Leak Racy Photos of Jeff Bezos to ‘National Enquirer’

Gay Trump Supporter Michael Sanchez Was Paid $200K to Leak Racy Photos of Jeff Bezos to ‘National Enquirer’

In February, The Daily Beast reported that Michael Sanchez, a gay Trump supporter and the brother of Jeff Bezos’ mistress Lauren Sanchez, was behind the leak of Bezos’ racy photos to the National Enquirer.

Late on Monday, the Wall Street Journal reported that Michael Sanchez was paid $200,000 by the Enquirer‘s parent company AMI to do so.

HuffPost reports: “Michael Sánchez, a talent agent and Lauren Sánchez’s brother, was a longtime source for the Enquirer, the Journal reported Monday. He’d started talking to the tabloid last fall about his sister’s relationship with Bezos, the paper said, citing unnamed sources. The Enquirer had already been trailing and photographing Bezos and Sánchez at the time of those conversations. David Pecker, American Media Inc.’s CEO, reportedly approved the payment to Sánchez so the tabloid could acquire the sexually charged text messages that the couple had sent to each other.”

USA Today reports: ‘The amount is higher than the company typically pays sources, the Journal reported, saying it “reflected the significance American Media placed on Mr. Sanchez’s information. … The Journal reported that Pecker was unaware Michael Sanchez was paid up-front and had a heated meeting with general counsel Cameron Stracher in New York City. AMI source agreements require, in most cases, for the company to pay for information after the story is published and if a story is never published the company doesn’t have to pay, the Journal reported. The company’s contract with Michael Sanchez was different and stipulated he was to paid up-front, regardless of whether any story was published, people familiar with the contract told the Journal.’
