Transgender HS Student Named 1 of 2 ‘Royal Knights’ After Prom Battle Compromise Dumps Gender Labels

Last week we reported that officials at Johnson High School in Hall County, Georgia removed a transgender student from the Prom King ballot and told the student he should be running for Prom Queen instead.

Dex Frier, who says he started identifying as male during his sophomore year, told WSB-TV: “They don’t have a clear rule that says you have to be biologically male to run for prom king (or that) you have to be biologically female to run for prom queen. There is no rule that states that.”A petition to put Frier on the Prom King ballot by members of the student body reached more than 30,000 signatures.

Frier’s friend Sam Corbett posted an update to the petition, saying a compromise had been reached.

“Yesterday, March 23, 2019, Dex Frier was named one of two ‘Royal Knight’ seniors at the Johnson High School Prom,” wrote Corbett. “The voting ballot was not divided on lines of ‘King’ or ‘Queen’ as it had been in past years, rather, it was a list in which two students, regardless of gender, could be voted Prom Royalty. This plan was one of compromise on both sides, and we would like to thank administration, both at the school and county level, for listening and welcoming our concerns—and most importantly, implementing a plan to address them.”

Corbett thanked supporters of the petition, and asked supporters to consider supporting a GoFund Me campaign that would allow Frier to begin transitioning.

HRC Partners With Dustin Lance Black and Paris Barclay on “Americans for the Equality Act” Campaign

HRC Partners With Dustin Lance Black and Paris Barclay on “Americans for the Equality Act” Campaign

HRC announced the launch of a star-studded Americans for the Equality Act public awareness and advertising campaign filmed by award-winning directors Dustin Lance Black and Paris Barclay. The series, which launches today with a debut video featuring Academy Award-winning actress Sally Field and her son Sam Greisman, will feature prominent figures in entertainment, sports and beyond speaking about the need for the Equality Act — a crucial civil rights bill that would extend clear, comprehensive non-discrimination protections to millions of LGBTQ people nationwide.

Currently, 50 percent of LGBTQ Americans live in one of the 30 states without statewide legal non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people — leaving millions at risk of being fired, denied housing, or refused service because of who they are or whom they love. The Equality Act would guarantee existing civil rights laws apply to LGBTQ people by providing clear, consistent non-discrimination protections based on sexual orientation or gender identity across key areas of life, including employment, housing, credit, education, public spaces and services, federally-funded programs and jury service.

Reintroduced in Congress on March 13, the measure has unprecedented support from nearly 70 percent of Americans, more than 280 members of Congress, 170 major businesses and more than 300 social justice, religious, medical and child welfare organizations. Recent polling finds that a growing majority of Americans support federal non-discrimination protections and LGBTQ equality. A recent survey by PRRI found that nearly seven in 10 Americans support laws like the Equality Act, including majorities in every single state and majorities of Republicans, Independents and Democrats alike.

Over the coming days and weeks, HRC will roll out videos from a powerhouse lineup of supportive film and television actors, influencers, musicians and professional athletes, including Adam Rippon, Shea Diamond, Alexandra Billings, Blossom Brown, Charlie and Max Carver, Dustin Lance Black, Paris and Christopher Barclay, Gloria Calderon Kellett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jane Lynch, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita, Justina Machado, Karamo Brown, Marcia Gay Harden, and Nyle DiMarco. The new series is modeled after HRC’s successful Americans for Marriage Equality campaign. The campaign will continue as the legislation is considered in Congress, with additional videos being produced.

“This is an exceptionally important effort, and I’m so proud to have had the opportunity to both direct this series and participate with my family,” said Emmy Award-winning director Paris Barclay. “So much of the progress of the LGBTQ movement has hinged on our ability to tell our stories and move people — and that’s the same spirit with which we’ve approached this compelling project. I was moved by the stories from the talented people participated in this campaign. We join them in working to make history again by passing the Equality Act.”

“Every American deserves a fair shot at a job to support themselves and their family, and the security of a roof over their head,” said Academy Award-winning director Dustin Lance Black. “These are key ingredients in what we’ve long cherished as our ‘American Dream.’ But until the Equality Act is signed into law, this dream may not be a reality for far too many Americans in many areas of our wild and wonderful country. I believe we must all share our personal stories and struggles with our fellow Americans in order to help this great dream become a reality for more of our loved ones, coworkers, and neighbors.”

“The advocates and artists featured in HRC’s ‘Americans for the Equality Act’ video series amplify the chorus of voices urging Congress to pass the Equality Act,” said HRC President Chad Griffin. “The harsh reality is that LGBTQ Americans still face real and persistent discrimination in their everyday lives, and Congress must pass the Equality Act to protect them. We’re grateful for these incredible champions for using their voices and platforms to help ensure every person is treated equally under the law, no matter who they are or who they love.”

INCOMPLETE. Trump didn’t have to explain anything: “Mueller never tried to take actions he was stopped from taking. We know of no subpoena that was served on the president, but because his lawyers thought he would lie, he didn’t go in for an interview. They’re the ones that stopped him. He was the one that wanted to go in and do that, but this thing was concluded and he didn’t have to explain anything.”

KELLY CRAFT. Trump’s pick to replace Nikki Haley as UN ambassador is a billionaire who showered donations on the senators who will vote to confirm her: ‘Craft, whom President Donald Trump has said he’ll nominate to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, gave $5,400 to Marco Rubio’s primary and general election campaigns for his 2016 Senate race. She also donated the maximum allowed — $2,700 — to Sen. Todd Young’s and Sen. Ron Johnson’s respective general election campaigns that year.’

LOGAN LYNN. Singer-songwriter says he was attacked after full-frontal Jay Mohr video: ‘Anonymous users began making wild accusations that Lynn says have no basis in truth. They alleged that he had molested children, was a serial rapist and other unprintable allegations. They photoshopped his face onto pornographic images, created memes with racist sayings that they falsely attributed to Lynn, and even alleged that he was a member of a prominent pro-pedophilia organization.’

DICK MOVE. Tucker Carlson sent CNN’s Brian Stelter a box of donuts: ‘It’s not quite clear what has prompted Carlson to mess with Stelter at this particular moment, though sources in the CNN camp think that Carlson’s intention is to “fat-shame” Stelter. Some sources guess that it’s over a story that Stelter wrote all the way back in November that suggested Carlson may have overstated the risk posed to his family by a protest at his home.’

It all started at 20 years old on stage at the NFL draft when my dream came true, and now here I am about to turn 30 in a few months with a decision I feel is the biggest of my life so far. I will be retiring from the game of football today. I am so grateful for the opportunity that Mr. Kraft and Coach Belichick gave to me when drafting my silliness in 2010. My life experiences over the last 9 years have been amazing both on and off the field. The people I have meet, the relationships I have built, the championships I have been apart of, I just want to thank the whole New England Patriots organization for every opportunity I have been giving and learning the great values of life that I can apply to mine. Thank you to all of Pats Nation around the world for the incredible support since I have been apart of this 1st class organization. Thank you for everyone accepting who I am and the dedication I have put into my work to be the best player I could be. But now its time to move forward and move forward with a big smile knowing that the New England Patriots Organization, Pats Nation, and all my fans will be truly a big part of my heart for rest of my life. It was truly an incredible honor to play for such a great established organization and able to come in to continue and contribute to keep building success. To all my current and past teammates, thank you for making each team every year special to be apart of. I will truly miss you guys. Cheers to all who have been part of this journey, cheers to the past for the incredible memories, and a HUGE cheers to the uncertain of whats next.

HRC announced its endorsement of Lori Lightfoot for mayor of Chicago, Illinois. If elected, she would make history as the city’s first openly LGBTQ mayor.

“As an experienced manager, advocate and reform expert, Lori Lightfoot is prepared to tackle tough challenges and find solutions to create greater opportunity for every Chicagoan,” said HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse. “With her demonstrated leadership in support of LGBTQ equality, Lightfoot will continue to work to ensure that Chicago is an inclusive and welcoming place for everyone. I look forward to working with HRC to make history on April 2nd and build a more equitable and inclusive Chicago in the years to come.”

As mayor, Lori Lightfoot has pledged to safeguard the civil rights of the LGBTQ comnunity. GLAAD announced today that American rapper, singer and songwriter Lizzo will perform her funk-pop infused anthem “Juice” at the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on March 28th. Other presenters were also announced for this year’s event, including Lena Waithe, Janet Mock, Gwyneth Paltrow, Meghan Trainor, Olivia Munn, Erika Jayne, Adam Rippon, Hayley Kiyoko, and Barbara Corcoran.

With her debut album Cuz I Love You set for release on April 19, Lizzo has previously showcased her star power and talent with hits such as “Boys”, the aforementioned “Juice” and her latest track “Tempo” with rapper Missy Elliott. Lizzo has appeared on HBO’s 2 Dope Queens with Phoebe Robinson and Jessica Williams, as well as the Ellen DeGeneres Show and NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Lizzo has been outspoken on LGBTQ issues and has been a role model for body positivity and female empowerment.

Lizzo and the incredible presenters confirmed today add to an already star-studded roster for this year’s L.A. ceremony, hosted by Ross Mathews. Earlier this month, it was announced that Beyonce and Jay-Z will receive the Vanguard Award, which recognizes allies who have made a significant difference in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people. Additionally, Emmy-winning Will & Grace actor Sean Hayes will be honored with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award. Other guests scheduled to appear at the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards include Allison Janney, the cast of Netflix’s Queer Eye, Nico Santos, Jameela Jamil, Shangela, Gigi Gorgeous, and Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons.

“The GLAAD Media Awards advance LGBTQ representation across the media and provide a stage for LGBTQ people and allies to send messages of acceptance that travel around the world,” said Rich Ferraro, GLAAD’s Chief Communications Officer and an Executive Producer of the annual awards. “From Phil Donahue speaking at the first Awards in 1990 to Cher surprising her son Chaz after he transitioned in 2012, to the message that Beyoncé and Jay-Z will send to LGBTQ people of color this year, the GLAAD Media Awards inspire and empower. This year’s star-studded events will reflect on how LGBTQ images in the media moved culture forward over the last 30 years and will celebrate the next generation of diverse LGBTQ creators, actors, and storytellers who are raising the bar at a critical time in our community and our country.”

The L.A. ceremony will be followed by the GLAAD Media Awards ceremony in New York City on May 4, where Madonna will receive the Advocate for Change Award and Sarah Jessica Parker will present the Vito Russo Award to Andy Cohen. Additional special guests for the New York City event include Don Lemon, Samantha Bee, and cast members of Pose.
