Queens of the Night Take the Runway on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ [RECAP and RANKINGS]
Queens of the Night Take the Runway on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ [RECAP and RANKINGS]
Oh, hell yes. My feelings about the early big, group lip sync challenges have been well documented. However, I am a sucker for a ball.
I particularly love a ball challenge when we have this many competitors. Thirty-three individual runways is a THRILL, and I think it’s a chance for these gals to show off who they are with far more flexibility than the sort of pre-written, pre-costumed schtick we suffered through last week.
Before we get to the supersized runway, the ladies returned to the work room, and the name of everybody’s lips was “BRANJIE.” That’s right, the ‘ho-mance between Miss Vanjie and Brooke Lynn is officially Drag Race CANON, DARLING, making the jump from stolen kisses on Untucked to acknowledged on the actual episodes.
The mini-challenge arrived tasking the queens to create a life-sized companion for the new RuPaul doll. Helping judge was special guest and All Stars 3 winner Trixie Mattel. Removed from all the All Stars scandal and blowback (#justiceforShangela), it’s nice to enjoy Trixie in all her Trixie-ness.
All of the girls did a decent job crafting characters and unique styles. Silky was a standout, serving a sticky-fingered character carrying lots of contraband while also, apparently, driving a donut truck. The win, however, went to Ra’Jah whose Starr-Kiesha Booty La’Rajah drove a bus and came with an extra-large cup of drank.
It didn’t, however, come with any sort of advantage for the main challenge: Monsters Ball. The girls needed to prepare lewks for three categories: Trampy Trick-or-Treater; Witch, Please; and Monster I’d Like to Freak. The final lewk was to be created in the work room, making it our second design challenge for the season.
With 33 ensembles to march down the runway, the majority of the episode’s runtime is dedicated to the fashion show. I’ll break down each individual queen’s runways in the rankings below, but let’s fast-forward to the judging, shall we?
It was immediately clear Brooke would be one of the judges’ favorites. They loved the drama of her mummified Trampy Trick-or-Treater, which she showcased while walking the runway completely on pointe. She probably got some bonus points for taking inspiration from Suicide Squad‘s Enchantress since model/actress Cara Delevingne was a guest on this week’s panel (along with a true Drag Race All Star, Elvira). The judges also loved Plastique’s three polished presentations, though Michelle worried she didn’t bring enough personality to the proceedings. Rounding out the top was Yvie Oddly, whose first showing as a trampy T-Rex ravaged the runway, but her M.I.L.F. was meh.
She still earned more kudos than Shuga, whose troll-inspired Trick-or-Treater didn’t translate, and her M.I.L.F. stood for Merkin I’d Like to Forget. It’s a shame, since her Blood Mary spin on witches was stunning. Silky received some slight criticism, mostly focused on the vagueness of her witch and shoddy construction on her third outfit. Ariel also found herself on the bottom as the judges had qualms with everything she showed.
Brooke took the win, while Ariel and Shuga were left to lip sync. Ariel really gave it her all, but she took a big spill that seemed to seal her fate. Bless her heart, she powered through the pain, but Ru still sent her sashaying away.
Finally, we’re down to our top 10. Let’s take a closer look at the lewks, and see where the queens stand in our rankings below.
- At this point, it appears Brooke Lynn is the queen to beat. She looked incredible for all three outfits. The simple mummy costume was elevated with big, bold makeup, and walking the runway on pointe was an inspired choice. (I actually think her choice to go flat-footed and give us the stereotypical mummy walk off the runway pushed the whole thing to another level of brilliance.) Her Enchantress had more presence and magnetism than Delevingne’s own. I think she looked great as a M.I.L.F., but I didn’t get any MONSTER, per se. It was dark, it was spooky, but was it a monster? Regardless, Brooke knocked it out of the park.
- That disappointing Voodoo doll aside, Yvie had a great showing. The T-Rex was so delightful, it transcended its lack of high-fashion flourish. I was particularly impressed with her Witch, Please interpretation, because it was true glamour. It showed she can do more than creative, crafty queen.
- I was shocked not to see Nina West place in the top this week. If I had to guess, I’d lay blame at her Trampy Trick-or-Treater, which was fun, but didn’t read trampy nor trick-or-treating. Still, I was tickled by her take on Witch, Please, and her M.I.L.F. was the most spot-on of the night. I hope she can stay out of her head and keep nailing these challenges.
- I still love Miss Vanjie, but I think we’ve hit our cruising altitude. There is some sameness to what she keeps showing on the runway. Her outfits are gorgeous, her makeup is perfect, but it feels like different colors of the same thing. The Victoria’s Secret Angel was good, but not particularly memorable. The best part of her witch was how she transformed from a feathery cape into the skirt, but we barely glimpsed it on camera. The headstone monster was cute, but it lacked the impact some of the other girls had.
- Ooh, Silky. Telling the judges you can only paint one mug is not a smart move. Versatility is the name of the game. Even if you’re not actually versatile, do like every other bottom on Grindr and LIE. The unicorn was cute, but still felt safe. She missed the mark with her Wiz-inspired witch, and that monster felt fully like amateur hour. Not her best. In fact, I’m starting to worry Silky might be all big bluster.
- Despite her top three placement this week, Plastique received the kiss of death from the judges. Michelle warning that she’s not showing personality does not bode well. The final makeup was unique, but everything else just felt like variations on pretty.
- Was A’Keria in this episode? None of her outfits were good (or terrible) enough to really register. My biggest beef was with her final spider outfit. Why not just add four extra arms instead of eight? I’d rather see her as part-spider monster than a monster with a giant spider on her back. It’s a small gripe, but it bothered me.
- Scarlet‘s Creature from the Black Lagoon couture far exceeded my expectations. It looked great on the runway. I also appreciated the beachy bog witch idea, but found it less exciting in execution. Her sexy pirate was just fine. Maybe it’s me, but I just don’t get her. I think she’s solid, but I’m not rooting for her. Maybe she’s merely OK, or maybe this is another Violet Chachki situation, and I’ve got it wrong. We’ll see.
- After last week’s fumble, Ra’Jah delivered three solid, if pretty unremarkable performances on the runway. Time is running out for Ra’Jah to score a MAJOR win (the mini-challenge this week doesn’t qualify).
- What happened, Shuga? Was this just a bad idea gone awry? That troll trick-or-treater was real bad, and her M.I.LF. was one of the worst we’ve seen on the runway. However, Bloody Mary was bloody BRILLIANT. She was unrecognizable, and the mirror presentation really sold it. Even her body language down the runway changed. It showed that she has potential. At least, she better, because she didn’t display a particularly strong lip sync.
- Despite even my own initial apprehension about embracing a self-proclaimed “Instagram Queen,” Ariel won my respect. She was not going to win this season, but she still showed she’s more than just a pretty picture. She knows who she is as a performer, but I don’t think she can give us any more than the Ariel we got.
How would you rank the queens?

HRC Sits Down with Parents for Trans Equality Council’s Mimi Lemay
HRC Sits Down with Parents for Trans Equality Council’s Mimi Lemay
Post submitted by Sula Malina, HRC Children, Youth and Families Program Coordinator
HRC recently sat down with Mimi Lemay, author and member of HRC Foundation’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council, to learn more about her family’s story. Lemay is an international advocate for transgender youth and the proud parent of a seven-year-old son, Jacob. She began her advocacy shortly after her son’s transition at an age of four, when an essay she wrote about the experience went viral.
The Lemay family was instrumental in the fight for the successful passage of an equal access public accommodations law in Massachusetts in 2016. Lemay’s memoir will be released in this fall, weaving her experiences growing up in, and ultimately leaving, her strict Ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, and her adult life parenting a trans child.
What inspired you to join HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council?
There are few forces in the world more powerful than parents whose protective instincts are awakened. The council has enabled me to fight alongside this country’s leading parent advocates and, with the expertise, experience and resources of HRC, there is nothing we cannot accomplish together.
What part of HRC’s work do you connect with the most?
The gift of HRC is that HRC is fighting on every front and, through it all, uplifting the voices of individuals and powerfully shifting hearts and minds. It is through these stories that we are then able to demand change in our government’s laws and our boardrooms’ policies. The culmination of all this work is the Equality Act. The idea of comprehensive rights nationwide is simple, necessary and long overdue.
This March, we celebrate Trans Day of Visibility. What does visibility mean to your family?
I have come to believe that the human spirit cannot thrive in hiding. My husband Joe and I experienced this with our son. In the months before Jacob’s transition, we could feel him withdrawing from us. When we began to educate ourselves about what it meant to be transgender, we realized that we needed to allow Jacob to fully become the person he knew himself to be. The change in Jacob once he was affirmed was instantaneous. It was like someone had suddenly flipped on a light switch in a dark room — and Jacob’s authentic self was blindingly beautiful. That is the power of visibility.
What’s one message you have for transgender youth who may not have the support of their families, but may one day be out and visible?
It breaks my heart to know that there are thousands of LGBTQ youth that have to stifle the truest and deepest parts of themselves in order to survive in hostile environments. To them, my message is: your day will come — you have not been forgotten. We will fight tooth and nail to change the world around you so that you can emerge as the valuable, precious, authentic individuals that you are.
HRC Foundation’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council is a coalition of some of the nation’s leading parent-advocates working for equality and fairness for transgender people. All I want for Christmas is equality
Introducing Height Verification
Introducing Height Verification
Say goodbye to height fishing.
Let’s be real, when it comes to online dating — honesty is the best policy. Yes, your height matters as long as every other shallow aspect of physical attraction does. Please try not to take it to heart.
It’s come to our attention that most of you 5’10ers out there are actually 5’6. The charade must stop. This type of dishonestly doesn’t just hurt your matches — it hurts us, too. Did it ever occur to you that we’re 5’6 and actually love our medium height? Did it ever occur to you that honesty is what separates humans from sinister monsters? Of course not.
You were only thinking of yourself. Well, height-lying ends here. To require everyone under 6’ to own up to their real height, we’re bringing truthfulness back into the world of online dating.
Introducing Tinder’s Height Verification Badge (HVB), because yes — sometimes it matters
It’s the tool we’ve had in our back-pockets for years, but we were hoping your honesty would allow us to keep it there. Our verification tool is super easy to use, and extremely hard to misuse.
Here’s how it works:
Simply input your true, accurate height with a screenshot of you standing next to any commercial building. We’ll do some state-of-the-art verifying and you’ll receive your badge directly on your profile.
Oh, and by the way? Only 14.5% of the U.S. male population is actually 6’ and beyond. So, we’re expecting to see a huge decline in the 80% of males on Tinder who are claiming that they are well over 6 feet. That’s fine by us — as long as we’re all living our truths.
Tinder’s HVB is coming soon to a phone near you.
Meet the Black LGBTQ trailblazers who presented Beyoncé & JAY-Z’s Vanguard Award
Meet the Black LGBTQ trailblazers who presented Beyoncé & JAY-Z’s Vanguard Award
At last evening’s 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, Beyonce and JAY-Z were honored with the prestigious Vanguard Award, which is presented to allies who have made a significant difference in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people. The power couple brought the crowd to their feet with incredibly powerful, emotional and personal speech about love and acceptance for the LGBTQ communuty. Before accepting, the power couple was introduced by four incredible black LGBTQ trailblazers, who each shared how Beyonce & JAY-Z have accelerated acceptance for the LGBTQ community, while also sharing their own inspiring stories. Meet the four presenters below:
The first presenter, Morris Singletary, is an HIV/AIDS advocate from Atlanta, who works with GLAAD and Gilead’s COMPASS Initiative. Morris spoke about being diagnosed with HIV and how Beyoncé and JAY-Z inspired him to become and activist: “And when I realized I wanted to dedicate my life to ensuring people with HIV get proper treatment so they can’t pass it on but can lead long, healthy lives, I looked to Beyoncé’s unending work ethic and her unending love for her fans and her kids to gain inspiration.”
Talking about the power couple, Morris stated “Beyoncé and JAY-Z concerts are like world peace is happening – it’s gay, straight, black, white, and everyone is dancing and singing together. Those concerts are a place where everyone is safe and accepted. Could you imagine if the world was one big Beyoncé and JAY-Z concert? What a wonderful world that would be.”
Trans writer, producer, and director Janet Mock took the stage second and delievered one of the most powerful moments of the night when she discussed how Beyoncé inspired her: “Beyonce, watching you evolve as an artist and an icon, a mother and a feminist, and a public black woman on the world stage who wields her voice like a weapon against racism, sexism and injustice, offered me a blueprint to do the same.”
Janet continued with a discussion of her role in JAY-Z’s ‘Family Feud’ video, directed by Ava DuVernay: “As a black trans woman who acknowledges that the life expectancy of my sisters is a young 35….who’s own womanhood and humanity is often questioned…who resists an administration aiming to erase us, to be included in the future, as a Founding Mother, was a vital intervention to a worldwide audience that LGBTQ people are deserving of being seen, heard and affirmed.”
Next, Beyoncé’s long-time stylist Ty Hunter came and surpirsed the couple. He said, ““I learned so much from Beyoncé Knowles Carter. She has shown me that you can be successful and still be humble. She carries herself with confidence, and taught me that I should also be proud of myself and my talent. The way I look, you hear things behind your back. But Bey said “Own it.” I do. I believe our entire community takes that lesson to heart.”
Ty continued his praised of Beyoncé & JAY-Z: “I know y’all are excited to see her and Jay tonight, but they’re not doing this for attention. They’re here because they believe in acceptance. Not only was Jay totally accepting of me and all the other LGBTQ people on our team, he is creating a space for other straight men, especially black men, to feel the same way.”
LGBTQ trailblazer and GLAAD Media Award-winner Lena Waithe closed the presentation with inspiring words about what Beyoncé & JAY-Z mean to the LGBTQ community: “Just your presence in this room tonight is revolutionary. Because right now you’re telling the world that the two most powerful Black people on the planet (you can duke it out with Michelle and Barack over that one, okay?) – but two magnificent Black people want the world to know they love, respect and accept the LGBTQ community – and that it’s the right thing to do.
Lena continued, “Tonight Black LGBTQ youth in the U.S. South, in Africa, and all over should hold their heads up a little higher and know they are loved just as they are. I thank both of you for shining that light.”
