VICTORY! Massachusetts Legislature to Send Anti-Conversion Therapy Bill to Gov. Baker’s Desk
HRC reacted to a vote by the Massachusetts Senate to pass bipartisan legislation protecting LGBTQ youth from the dangerous and discredited practice of so-called “conversion therapy” and called on Governor Charlie Baker to sign the bill. If enacted, Massachusetts would become the 16th state in the U.S. to protect youth from this egregious practice. Governor Baker has already stated his inclined support for this crucial legislation. This bill will go to a conference committee before being sent to the governor for his signature.
“Children everywhere deserve to live their lives authentically and should never be subjected to the dangerous and discredited practice of so-called conversion therapy. We laud and thank those who voted in the Massachusetts legislature to pass — in bipartisan fashion — these vital and potentially life-saving protections in the Bay State,” said HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse. “Now, we look forward to Governor Baker’s signing this bill into law, ending this egregious practice in Massachusetts.”
There is no credible evidence that conversion therapy can change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. To the contrary, research has clearly shown that these practices pose devastating health risks for LGBTQ young people such as depression, decreased self-esteem, substance abuse, homelessness, and even suicidal behavior. The harmful practice is condemned by every major medical and mental health organization, including the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, and American Medical Association.
When signed into law, Massachusetts will become the 16th state to enact statutory protections for youth from so-called “conversion therapy,” following Connecticut, California, Delaware, Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, Illinois, Vermont, New York, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Washington, Maryland, Hawaii, New Hampshire and the District of Columbia. Just yesterday, Puerto Rico’s Governor issued an executive order protecting minors in the commonwealth from the harmful practice. A growing number of municipalities have also enacted similar protections, including at least fifty cities and counties in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Washington, Florida, New York, Arizona, and Wisconsin.
According to a recent report by the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, an estimated 20,000 LGBTQ minors in states without protections will be subjected to conversion therapy by a licensed healthcare professional if state officials fail to act. Last year, national organizations representing millions of licensed medical and mental health care professionals, educators, and child welfare advocates declared their support for legislative protections against conversion therapy.
HRC has partnered with the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), the Trevor Project, MassEquality and local advocates in support of these vital protections. More information on the lies and dangers of efforts to change sexual orientation or gender identity can be found here.

‘Arrow’ Actor Colton Haynes Details Dive into Alcohol and Drug Addiction
Actor Colton Haynes told Attitude magazine that following the death of his mother and the split from his husband Jeff Leatham, his addiction to alcohol and drugs spiraled out of control
It was a spiral that started after he came out as gay, said Haynes: “I came out and, in a way, my downward spiral started. I felt extremely free but at the same time the amount of attention I was getting was making me spin out of control.”
Then came two other major moments: “I got married and that didn’t work out. That was extremely public and heart-breaking, and right when that was going on, my mom died. At that point I fell apart. My brain broke.”
Haynes said he “got so heavily involved with drugs and alcohol to mask the amount of pain I was feeling that I couldn’t even make some decisions for myself. I was drowning in my own shit.”
One week-long binge put the actor in the hospital after he was found heavily bruised at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills with a nearly-ruptured kidney and a partial loss of sight in one eye. He also had two seizures.
“In 10 years, there were maybe 25 days I didn’t drink. I remember when I started, it was a couple glasses of wine, and it regressed into really dark times. I used to blame it on my anxiety or depression issues, but really the root of all my problems was the alcohol and drugs,” he said.
Haynes is in recovery now and said he’s found an “amazing amount of true love for himself” and begun recognizing people who lift him up rather than tear him down.

GLAAD Praises U.S. House for Passing Resolution Condemning Trump Administration’s Ban on Transgender Service Members
ICYMI: Poll: 70% of U.S. voters support transgender military service
GLAAD to host special screening of TransMilitary on Capitol Hill on April 3
NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today hailed the U.S. House of Representatives for passing a resolution denouncing President Donald Trump’s ban on transgender service members from serving openly for our country’s armed forces. The resolution was approved just two weeks before the Trump Administration announced plans to implement the policy on April 12.
“Any person who wishes to serve and protect the freedoms of this country should be able to do just that – regardless of their gender identity. It’s a welcoming reassurance that the elected leaders in the U.S. House support the more than 13,000 brave transgender service members who proudly dedicate their lives to our nation,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “It’s time for President Trump to drop his proposed ban and stand with transgender patriots putting their lives on the line to keep us all safe.”
The House vote comes one week before GLAAD plans to host a special screening of the groundbreaking documentary, TransMilitary, on Capitol Hill on April 3. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Congressman Joe Kennedy, and transgender service members – including Captains Jennifer Peace and El Cook – will attend the event.
GLAAD has fought back against the Trump Administration’s transgender military ban since the President issued his directive on July 26, 2017. Not only has GLAAD condemned the administration’s attempt to prevent transgender Americans from serving the United States, but GLAAD also supported the production and publicity of TransMilitary, a documentary which tells the stories about the brave trans soldiers currently our country. GLAAD presented a copy of the documentary to every member of the U.S. House Subcommittee on Military Personnel ahead of the subcommittee’s hearing on the topic on February 27. TransMilitary is now available on iTunes and Amazon.
Since taking office, the President Trump and his administration have unleashed more than 98 attacks against LGBTQ Americans in policy and rhetoric, which includes banning transgender service members from openly serving in the country’s armed forces. GLAAD’s Trump Accountability Project (TAP) has catalogued every anti-LGBTQ action by this administration, available at www.glaad.org/trump.
