GLAAD Calls for University of Texas at El Paso to Reject Heather Wilson as Its President

Wilson voted against The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act in 2007

Heather Wilson has long history of anti-LGBTQ activism, dating back to 2000.

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today joined students and activists at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) by calling on the university to reject Heather Wilson to be its next president, citing a long history of anti-LGBTQ activism dating back to 2000.

“The students of the University of Texas at El Paso deserve a President, who has demonstrated that she will stand up for them, and Heather Wilson has proven time and time again that she will not stand up for LGBTQ people.  Simply put, her record should disqualify her without question,” said Zeke Stokes, Chief Programs Officer at GLAAD.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Heather Wilson’s Anti-LGBTQ Record 

  • Said she does not “approve of” homosexuality.
  • Attacked an anti-LGBT bullying bill on the basis that teasing is just a part of a child’s life.
  • Voted for a federal amendment to the US Constitution banning marriage equality for same-sex couples, going so far as to say she opposed civil unions as well.
  • Declared that “marriage — the union of one man and one woman as husband and wife — is the best institution for raising children,” and vowed to “oppose any effort to undermine” this position.
  • As member of US House, twice voted against LGBT-inclusive hate crimes legislation.
  • Voted against an LGBT-inclusive Employment Nondiscrimination Act.

Netflix today revealed the first six images from its reboot of Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City, premiering this summer. Laura Linney and Olympia Dukakis reprise their roles as “Mary Ann Singleton” and “Anna Madrigal” with Ellen Page joining them as “Shawna” and Murray Bartlett (Looking) as “Michael ‘Mouse’ Tolliver”.

Other casting: Barbara Garrick is returning as “DeDe Halycon Day.” Paul Gross (Due South, Alias Grace) will be reprising his role as “Brian Hawkins,” ex-husband of “Mary Ann Singleton” and father of “Shawna”; Charlie Barnett (Chicago Fire) as Mouse’s boyfriend “Ben Marshall”; newcomers Josiah Victoria Garcia as “Jake Rodriguez,” a newer resident on Barbary Lane who is a transgender man and a caregiver for Anna Madrigal and May Hong (High Maintenance) as Jake’s long-term girlfriend “Margot Park.”
