South Korea To Shut Down All Dog ‘Slaughterhouses’

Seoul “will shut down all dog slaughterhouses” vowed the city’s mayor as South Korea’s dog meat trade faces increasing calls to terminate them immediately from many quarters according to The Daily Mail.

“Seoul mayor, Park Won-soon, vowed to close all dog butcheries in the city and made the announcement to an audience at the weekend after a screening of an animated film called Underdog.”

The movie is about abandoned dogs that find themselves in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).

8,500 dogs are estimated to be abandoned in Seoul and “a quarter of them are euthanized because they are not adopted,” he told the crowd.

Olympian skier Gus Kenworthy was famously upset at the situation that many potential canine companions have to endure in South Korea while he was there for the Olympics last year.

Elite Daily said last year: [Kenworthy] leaves PyeongChang, this amazing human will be adding another four-legged little pooch — rescued from a dog meat farm — to the mix. Gus Kenworthy’s post about dogs in South Korea is so sad, but at least there’s a happy twist. Not only did he save one sweet pup by adopting her, he is now giving a voice to the voiceless with a raw and emotional post about the experience on Instagram.

Kenworthy and his boyfriend ended up adopting a pup before the returned stateside saying in a post on Instagram: “This morning Matt and I had a heart-wrenching visit to one of the 17,000 dog farms here in South Korea. Across the country there are 2.5 million dogs being raised for food in some of the most disturbing conditions imaginable. Yes, there is an argument to be made that eating dogs is a part of Korean culture. And, while don’t personally agree with it, I do agree that it’s not my place to impose western ideals on the people here. The way these animals are being treated, however, is completely inhumane and culture should never be a scapegoat for cruelty. I was told that the dogs on this particular farm were kept in “good conditions” by comparison to other farms. The dogs here are malnourished and physically abused, crammed into tiny wire-floored pens, and exposed to the freezing winter elements and scorching summer conditions. When it comes time to put one down it is done so in front of the other dogs by means of electrocution sometimes taking up to 20 agonizing minutes. Despite the beliefs of some, these dogs are no different from the ones we call pets back home. Some of them were even pets at one time and were stolen or found and sold into the dog meat trade. Luckily, this particular farm (thanks to the hard work of the Humane Society International and the cooperation of a farmer who’s seen the error of his ways) is being permanently shut down and all 90 of the dogs here will be brought to the US and Canada where they’ll find their fur-ever homes. I adopted the sweet baby in the first pic (we named her Beemo) and she’ll be coming to the US to live with me as soon as she’s through with her vaccinations in a short couple of weeks. I cannot wait to give her the best life possible! There are still millions of dogs here in need of help though (like the Great Pyrenees in the 2nd pic who was truly the sweetest dog ever). I’m hoping to use this visit as an opportunity to raise awareness to the inhumanity of the dog meat trade and the plight of dogs everywhere, including back home in the US where millions of dogs are in need of loving homes!”

Reddit Wants Robert Pattison To Be The Next Batman Really Bad

Reddit Wants Robert Pattison To Be The Next Batman Really Bad

Speculation about who will play a younger than Ben Affleck Batman in director Matthew Reeves reboot of the franchise called The Batman has run rampant.

Everyone from Nick Jonas to Scott Adkins have been rumored to have read or expressed interest in the role but Pattison seems more likely to meet the criteria.

Adkins even made an audition tape for the role.

And the fans seem to be here for Pattison unlike the nearly universal detriment expressed when it was announced that Affleck would don the cowl as the lead in 2016’s Batman Vs Superman: Dawn Of Justice opposite Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot as Superman and Wonder Woman respectively.

Ill will and nasty responses from fans have been a consistent theme for casting announcements for the cinematic adventures of the caped crusader–with fans rapidly dialing down or doing a complete 360 to the actor in the role when the film has debuted (Michael Keaton–I’m looking at you).

Reeves is reportedly eyeing a younger actor (ideally an unknown) to play Bruce Wayne in his film, and play up the vigilante’s reputation as the world’s greatest detective–-something that hasn’t been done cinematically.

One fan on Reddit is so stoked to see Pattinson take on the role of Bruce Wayne that he made this phenomenal rendering of Pattison in Christian Bale’s The Dark Knight Rises costume. Saying “if [director] Reeves needs a younger actor to portray Bruce Wayne, I can totally see him even if others can’t seem to.”

Heroic Hollywood reported: “Plot details for Matt Reeves’ The Batman have yet to be revealed, however, rumors have pointed to a previous version of the script once featuring Ben Affleck bookending the film as his current Batman while the film introduced a younger version of the DC superhero.”

Pioneering PrEP Advocate Has Died

Pioneering PrEP Advocate Has Died

Dr. Mags Portman has died at 44 according to BuzzFeed News.

In the last few days, leading figures from across the HIV sector have paid tribute to her “inspirational” work and dedication to patients — as well as her limitless energy and humor they reported.

The LGBT Foundation issued a statement that said in part: “Mags was a pioneer in the fight against HIV, something she dedicated her entire career to. She was part of the team who proved the efficacy of PrEP – a vital development in the fight against HIV. She pushed the General Medical Council to clarify whether clinicians can recommend treatments to their patients that are not available on the NHS. This proved a vital moment in the availability of PrEP. She later went on advise doctors in sexual health clinics on prescribing PrEP at a time when many were crying out for access to the medication.”

Portman appeared in a BBC documentary in 2017 called The People Vs The NHS: Who Gets the Drugs? based on the story hose who fought to bring PrEP to the masses and people that needed it.

The Terrence Higgins Trust (the largest HIV advocacy and charity org in the UK) began The Mags Portman Access Fund whose goal is: to ensure people in need of PrEP can access it. Our fund supports people with no income or in receipt of benefits who do not have access to PrEP on the NHS.

Portman’s work has prevented and reduced countless HIV transmissions.

We are all deeply saddened at the news of the passing Dr. Mags Portman. Her pioneering work, advocacy and fight for access to PrEP will forever be remembered by all who continue to struggle to get PrEP for everyone who needs it t.co/oGQ2Rtr45o pic.twitter.com/LPYzt7k9Nq

Sam Smith Talks About His Battle With Fat Shaming and Body Dysmorphia

In an Instagram post out singer Sam Smith spoke candidly about his life long battle with his weight and body dysmorphia.

In the past if I have ever done a photo shoot with so much as a t-shirt on, I have starved myself for weeks in advance and then picked and prodded at every picture and then normally taken the picture down. Yesterday I decided to fight the fuck back. Reclaim my body and stop trying to change this chest and these hips and these curves that my mum and dad made and love so unconditionally. Some may take this as narcissistic and showing off but if you knew how much courage it took to do this and the body trauma I have experienced as a kid you wouldn’t think those things. Thank you for helping me celebrate my body AS IT IS @ryanpfluger I have never felt safer than I did with you. I’ll always be at war with this bloody mirror but this shoot and this day was a step in the right fucking direction

“I’ll always be at war with this bloody mirror but this shoot and this day was a step in the right fucking direction” Smith said that the shoot, with photographer Ryan Pfluger, represented a major shift in the way he sees himself.

Smith says in the post: In the past if I have ever done a photo shoot with so much as a t-shirt on, I have starved myself for weeks in advance and then picked and prodded at every picture and then normally taken the picture down. Thank you for helping me celebrate my body as it is.

Pfluger spoke about his experience on his own Instagram page saying that Smith reminded him of his master’s thesis about how “photography is therapy.”

“Being a photographer can often be a very thankless job (let’s not even get started on overdue payments, lack of crediting, unrealistic expectations etc.) – Yet true collaboration brings all the gratitude and good vibes for complete fulfillment said Pfluger.
