GLAAD Calls on White House to Release Official Notes from Meeting with SCOTUS Spouse Ginni Thomas on Transgender Americans, Marriage Equality

GLAAD CEO: “The fact that President Trump is taking counsel from known anti-LGBTQ activists like Ginni Thomas regarding policies that could impact LGBTQ people should have Americans gravely concerned about the foundations of our government.”

The New York Times reports meeting included: “members of the group denounced transgender people” […] “someone said that gay marriage was harming the fabric of the United States”

NEW YORK – GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today called on the White House to release official bookkeeping notes from President Donald Trump’s meeting with Ginni Thomas, the wife of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and her anti-LGBTQ group Groundswell last week.

According to news reports, Ms. Thomas led a meeting with President Trump at the White House where participants denounced transgender Americans and claimed the historic, nationwide marriage equality ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court was “harming the fabric of the United States.” The Supreme Court is expected to take up Trump’s ban on transgender service members sometime in the near future, and Ms. Thomas’s husband will vote on this critical case.

“The fact that President Trump is taking counsel from known anti-LGBTQ activists like Ginni Thomas regarding policies that could impact LGBTQ people and families should have Americans gravely concerned about the foundations of our government, and they deserve to see the official notes that came from that meeting,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO at GLAAD. “LGBTQ people know President Trump wants to roll back their hard-fought progress, but this clear display of coordination between the Executive Branch and the wife of a U.S. Supreme Court justice shows Americans the Trump Administration will do anything to push an agenda – even if it means shredding the checks and balances system. The White House has a responsibility to release official notes from the meeting and provide context in the violently anti-LGBTQ work that Thomas and her organization lead.”

Today GLAAD added Ginni Thomas to its Trump Accountability Project, a list of administration officials and related individuals with anti-LGBTQ activist records. According to GLAAD’s Trump Accountability Project (TAP), President Trump and his administration have been the most anti-LGBTQ in recent history, authorizing attacks on the LGBTQ community more than 92 times. For more about these, go to www.glaad.org/trump.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Ginni Thomas’s Anti-LGBTQ Past

  • Founding member of secretive far-right group Groundswell, which lobbies against LGBTQ rights.
  • Wrote a column for The Daily Caller that promoted viciously anti-trans activist Stella Morabito. In the article, the two insisted that transgender rights are part of a ‘politically correct propaganda tool’ that is ‘manipulating the masses.’
  • Proudly supports “public schools who have bathroom and locker policies that common sensically link to biologically as opposed to their progressive agenda that there is no difference between a man and a woman, and a gender that can change from day to day.”
  • Used her Daily Caller column to promoted an author who claims trans rights are part of an agenda to negatively transform America: “To [author Dr. Kim Holmes], the transgender issue uses a small number of “victims” to demonstrate who can make laws. By expanding an administrative interpretation of “civil rights,” without Congress, the federal state solidifies its capacity to dictate American law – even if it’s public school bathroom policies. Most Republicans fail to step up and fight, he says, because they fear a popular culture that is against them and are exceedingly shallow.”
  • Included “the emergence of transgender rights” as one of the host of horribles that left wing activists are supposedly imposing on America: “So help people connect the dots in America. There’s so much going on. Whether it’s suddenly the emergence of transgender rights, or the downing of statues or ESPN suddenly becoming left wing commentators instead of sports people, or the closing down of free speech on college campuses, or the censorship that’s happening by media providers to conservative or pro-American voices.”
  • Promoted Sam Sorbo, an anti-trans activist who claims that trans-inclusive public school policies “bully” other students.

DISTURBING AND INAPPROPRIATE — WIFE OF JUSTICE CLARENCE THOMAS MEETS WITH TRUMP DAYS AFTER SCOTUS ALLOWED DISCRIMINATORY TRANS TROOP BAN TO GO INTO EFFECT: Ginni Thomas led a group of hard-right extremists who, according to The New York Times, argued that women should not serve in the military because they have “less muscle mass and lung capacity” than men, asserted that marriage equality was harming the “fabric” of the U.S. and were “dismissive that sexual assault is pervasive in the military”. Meet the first non-binary New Yorker to get IDNYC’s new gender marker

Meet the first non-binary New Yorker to get IDNYC’s new gender marker

Abdool Corlette, GLAAD

Starting last week, transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming New Yorkers are now able to select a third gender on their IDNYC, New York’s free, government issued, state-id card.

To mark the announcement, GLAAD followed Jackie, a New York City student, as they became the first New Yorker to get the ‘X’ gender marker on their IDNYC.

In the below video, Jackie reflects on the ease of registering for an IDNYC, and explains why the new gender maker is so important to them.

GLAAD also spoke with Ashe McGovern, Senior LGBTQ Policy Advisor, Office of the Mayor of New York City, who explains why these third gender options are important to the community at large.

McGovern says, “we know that trans and non-binary folks, particularly folks of color and immigrant communities, experience widespread discrimination in housing, employment, healthcare, school, and in public spaces […][the addition of a third gender marker] helps to decrease the likelihood that folks are going to experience discrimination and puts power back in our communities to decide who they share information with and how about their gender identity or expression.”

Check out the full video below.

GLAAD President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis, applauded the new IDNYC card: “GLAAD is proud to work with New York City to amplify the importance of adding a third gender option on the IDNYC and how easy it is for transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming New Yorkers to receive. New York City’s move to recognize all LGBTQ New Yorkers should encourage other cities and states to create inclusive identity cards and documents as well.”

For more information about the IDNYC, call 311 or visit nyc.gov/idnyc. For more information about GLAAD’s work, please visit www.glaad.org, facebook.com/glaad, and twitter.com/glaad.

Trump Blasts FOX News Reporters, Pundit Ann Coulter

Trump Blasts FOX News Reporters, Pundit Ann Coulter

Donald Trump made a rare attack on State TV network FOX News in a tweet on Sunday night, accusing them of misreporting on how wonderfully he’s doing.

Tweeted Trump: ‘Never thought I’d say this but I think @johnrobertsFox and @GillianHTurner@FoxNews have even less understanding of the Wall negotiations than the folks at FAKE NEWS CNN & NBC! Look to final results! Don’t know how my poll numbers are so good, especially up 19% with Hispanics?’

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 28, 2019

Trump also attacked conservative pundit Ann Coulter.

Said Trump in an interview with the Wall Street Journal: “I hear she’s become very hostile. Maybe I didn’t return her phone call or something.”

CNBC added: ‘Trump told the Journal in an interview that he thinks there’s a less than 50 percent chance such a deal could be reached before the next government funding lapse on Feb. 15 — which is less than three weeks away. The president also said he doubted he would accept less than $5.7 billion for the border wall, nor would he agree to grant citizenship for “Dreamers” — immigrants illegally brought to the U.S. as children who would have benefited from never-passed proposals in Congress called the DREAM Act — in exchange for wall funding, according to the Journal report.’

Find a suspicious account? Report it! Learn how to deal with spam accounts
Ever get surprised by new friend notifications, suspicious offers, or unwanted messages from accounts you don’t know? If so, they’re probably from spam accounts.

Spam accounts use a variety of methods to try and get your attention. For example, they may pretend to be attractive person or use the LINE logo to appear like official accounts.

These accounts often want you to click on a link to make you buy a product or sign up for a paid website. Make sure you never click any links sent by spam accounts!

Is this really a LINE official account? How to spot spam accounts

Sometimes spammers pretend to be legitimate LINE official accounts. While it may be difficult at first glance to know if a spam account is fake, a real LINE official account will always have a green badge next to its name.

If you come across a spam account, report it!

Dealing with spam accounts is simple: If you get a message from one, just tap Report and then Block to say goodbye to the spam account.

▶ What if you friend a spam account by mistake?
Spam accounts usually want you to click on a link to make you buy a product or sign up for a paid website. There’s no harm if you happen to friend one by mistake. Just go ahead and report and block the spam account as usual.

Open the “V” menu in a chat, go to Settings, then tap Report. After reporting the account, you can block it as well.

What happens when you tap the Report button?

When you tap Report, LINE receives the last 10 messages the account sent to you as well as that account’s info. We then review that received data to determine if the account really is a spam account and take appropriate action.

By not just blocking spam accounts, but reporting them too, you help us find spam account operators and keep them from spamming other users.
How do spam accounts reach you?

You may be wondering how strangers are able to friend you in the first place. Spam accounts have a few methods of getting in touch with you.

1. By randomly entering and trying phone numbers
2. By randomly entering and searching IDs
3. Your account may have been inadvertently shared by a friend or fellow group member

While it may feel like that spam accounts are specifically targeting you and know your personal info, in fact spammers typically target large groups of users indiscriminately and are just attempting to appeal to as many users as possible.
How to stay safe

If you ever get a spam message, make sure to report and block the spam account. You can also take extra measures to avoid spam messages if you believe it is necessary.

1. Keep users from automatically friending your account via your phone number
Settings > Friends > Disable the “Allow others to add me” setting

2. Keep users from friending your account via ID searches
Settings > Privacy > Disable the “Allow others to add me by ID” setting

3. Automatically reject messages not sent by your friends
Settings > Privacy > Enable the “Filter messages” setting

Feel free to use these settings to keep spam messages away.

At LINE, we’re working hard every day to make sure your LINE experience is the safest and most secure possible. Stay safe out there!

Long Overdue GENDA Bill and Conversion Therapy Ban Both Signed Into Law In New York State

Long Overdue GENDA Bill and Conversion Therapy Ban Both Signed Into Law In New York State

On Friday, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into law the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) and the state’s ban on conversion therapy practiced on minors.

The long-stalled bills overwhelmingly passed the Legislature last week, a result due to Democrats seizing control of the Senate in November’s election said The Albany Times Union.

“By signing into law GENDA and a ban on the fraudulent practice of conversion therapy, we are taking another giant step forward in advancing equal justice for every New Yorker,” Cuomo said in a statement. “We are once again sending a clear and proud message that there is no place for hate in our state, and anyone who engages in bigotry and discrimination will be held accountable.”

Mental health professionals have long recognized that therapies intended to change a person’s sexual orientation pose serious health risks.

The legislation treats engaging in conversion therapy with a patient under 18 as professional malpractice.

Joseph Anderson, president of the LGBTQ student union Haven at Cornell University in upstate Ithaca, NY, told the Cornell Sun that the bill’s passage is long overdue. “It is a moment to celebrate and thank our lawmakers in Albany for protecting transgender, gender non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals,” he said.

The Sun says that the bill was originally introduced in 2003 but failed to reach a vote on the senate floor until this year, when Democrats regained control of the Legislature. Previously, the bill has been voted on successfully in the Assembly for ten consecutive times.
