Victory for HRC-Backed Candidate Jennifer Boysko VA State Senate Special Election
HRC released the following statement on the victory of Jennifer Boysko in the Virginia State Senate’s 33rd District:
“We are thrilled to have Jennifer Boysko join the Virginia State Senate and to work alongside her in fighting for LGBTQ rights in the commonwealth,” said HRC National Field Director Marty Rouse. “HRC was proud to endorse Boysko in this race, and we look forward to working closely with her to win LGBTQ-inclusive nondiscrimination protections and ensure equal rights and dignity for all Virginians this legislative session.”
“I want to thank the staff and volunteers of the Human Rights Campaign for their hard work,” said Jennifer Boysko. “I pledge to continue the work of making sure that everyone in Virginia receives dignity and respect no matter who they love.”
Jennifer Boysko has been a strong and consistent voice for LGBTQ equality in the Virginia House of Delegates. Boysko also worked to improve the schools and economy in Northern Virginia and fought to expand Medicaid to thousands of Virginians.
In November, HRC-endorsed Congresswoman-elect Jennifer Wexton (VA-10) defeated anti-LGBTQ Congresswoman Barbara Comstock. HRC deployed 14 staff and organizers for a major get-out-the-vote effort across the commonwealth alongside its local volunteer steering committees. Leading up to the election, HRC members and supporters knocked on thousands of doors. In addition to robust door-to-door, mail and phone canvassing in partnership with local groups, HRC hosted four Equality Action Academy trainings to give HRC members and supporters the tools they need to take action locally in legislative advocacy and in support of pro-equality candidate campaigns.

Elizabeth Warren Addresses The Anti-Trans Blemish On Her Record But Does Not Apologize
Because she’s one of the first Democrats to officially throw her hat in the ring for the 2020 presidential race, Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s (D-MA) record has been under a lot of scrutiny over the past week.
When it comes to LGBTQ issues, she has been a very consistent ally, with one exception, which her campaign has addressed for the first time says Think Progress.
In 2012, when Warren was facing off against Republican incumbent Scott Brown, a transgender inmate was suing the Massachusetts prison system after being denied transition medical care. Michelle Kosilek had fought for decades to receive the gender confirmation surgery her doctors said was medically necessary, but the Massachusetts Department of Corrections refused to provide it. This was despite the fact that she had been treated for depression and multiple attempts to self-harm her genitalia.
In September of that year, a federal judge ruled that Kosilek should receive the surgery she had been prescribed. Because it was one of the first major cases of a transgender prisoner seeking medical care, the ruling became a very hot topic. Both Warren and Brown were asked about it on the campaign trail, and both criticized the ruling. Brown called it an “outrageous abuse of taxpayer dollars,” and Warren similarly said in a radio interview, “I have to say, I don’t think it’s a good use of taxpayer dollars.”
