ACLU Files Suit Against School That Won’t Allow a Student Gay-Straight Alliance to Call Itself ‘Gay’

The ACLU has filed a lawsuit against East Allen County Schools in Indiana after the school district told students in the school’s gay-straight alliance that it could not use the words “gay, GSA, or LGBT+, or similar language, in any of the announcements or promotions for the club” and must call itself something different.

The ACLU writes: ‘Throughout the country student clubs such as Leo Pride Alliance are known as “gay straight alliances” or “GSAs.” When Leo students sought to establish a GSA as one of the clubs at the high school, administrators would not allow the club to be called “Leo GSA.” They insisted the club be called “Leo Pride Alliance,” with “Pride” referring to an acronym used by the school, “Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diligence, and Excellence.”…Unlike other clubs, the Leo Pride Alliance is not allowed to meet outside of a single classroom, or participate in school fundraisers. The faculty advisor of Leo Pride Alliance is also required to send a list of all club members to all faculty. Since this has started some students have stopped attending the group.’

Said Jane Henegar, executive director of ACLU of Indiana: “This group aims to create an environment that provides social, emotional and educational support to students, during a time that otherwise might be increasingly difficult for LGBTQ students. The differential treatment aimed at Leo Pride Alliance by administrators is unwarranted.”

HRC RESPONDS TO LAME DUCK POWER GRAB BY WISCONSIN REPUBLICANS: HRC is calling on Governor Scott Walker to veto legislation designed to strip power from incoming Governor Tony Evers and incoming Attorney General Josh Kaul. “Elections matter and on November 6, Wisconsin voters came out in record numbers to reject the toxic leadership of Governor Scott Walker and Attorney General Brad Schimel,” said HRC Wisconsin State Director Wendy Strout. “Rather than accept the will of the people, Republican legislators have vindictively jammed through a sweeping set of bills designed to undermine the power and authority of our incoming, democratically-elected leaders. This illegitimate power grab is an affront to our state’s values.” Read more from HRC.

TRUMP-PENCE ADMINISTRATION REFUSES TO RELEASE DOCUMENTS ABOUT ITS “RELIGIOUS LIBERTY TASK FORCE”: “Since their first day in office, Trump and Pence have ruthlessly attacked the rights of LGBTQ people, often working to license discrimination against LGBTQ people under the guise of respecting personal belief,” David Stacy, HRC’s director of government affairs, said. “The lack of transparency in seeking to codify a license to discriminate across the federal government should alarm not just LGBTQ people but all Americans.” More from MetroWeekly.

THROWBACK THURSDAY — IT’S BEEN ONE YEAR SINCE BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA, EMBRACED A NON-DISCRIMINATION ORDINANCE PROTECTING ITS LGBTQ CITIZENS: “What we are seeing other cities notice in Birmingham is the formation of a model and a conversation that they haven’t yet considered,” said HRC Alabama State Director Eva Kendrick. “It has started the thought process with elected officials around the state and community leaders who are saying, ‘This does matter. This matters to my neighbor. This matters to my employee. This matters to the person that I attend church with and I want to listen more carefully.'” More from AL.com.

The award’s namesake and this year’s inaugural recipient will be announced in the coming days, along with the announcement of this year’s Cecil B. DeMille recipient.

Milo Yiannopoulos Dumped by Fundraising Site Patreon After One Day

Milo Yiannopoulos Dumped by Fundraising Site Patreon After One Day

Reportedly $4 million in debt, white supremacist homocon troll Milo Yiannopoulos was kicked off the fundraising site Patreon after one day using the service, because the platform doesn’t allow “association with or [support of] hate groups.”

Hi there, thanks for the tweet. Milo Yiannopoulos was removed from Patreon as we don’t allow association with or supporting hate groups on Patreon. For more info, please see our Community Guidelines. t.co/L7737I1ENi

— Patreon (@Patreon) December 5, 2018

Wrote Yiannopoulos on his Patreon page: “I’ve had a miserable year or two, banned and de-platformed and censored and blacklisted … and now I need your help. I want to get back on my feet and come roaring back in 2019 with the fabulous comedy and insightful, serious commentary that made me famous in the first place…The past two years hasn’t been easy. I am one of the most censored and most lied-about people in the world. Even my fans sometimes believe things about me that aren’t true, because journalists lie more about me than perhaps anyone else in America. They can’t stand the idea of gay man who thinks for himself and says what he thinks.”

According to documents assembled by his former Australian tour promoters and seen by Guardian Australia, Yiannopoulos is more than $2 million in debt.

However, after that figure was reported, Yiannopoulos took to his Facebook page and claimed that the number was too small, writing, “I was shocked to read more lies in the press about me today. They say I owe $2m. I don’t! It’s at least $4m. Do you know how successful you have to be to owe that kind of money?”

The Guardian reported: ‘The documents indicate that as of April 2018, Yiannopoulos owed $1.6m to his own company, $400,000 to the Mercers, $153,215 to his former lawyers, $76,574 to former collaborator and Breitbart writer Allum Bokhari, and $20,000 to the luxury jewellery brand Cartier. As of 2 October, Yiannopoulos owed sums of several thousand dollars to far right writers including Ian Miles Cheong, anti-Islamic ideologue Pamela Geller and science fiction writer Theodore Beale, aka Vox Day, the documents indicate, amongst others. They were published on the website of an Australian far right figure and United Patriots Front member.’
