THE CRISIS AT THE BORDER IS AN LGBTQ ISSUE. HERE’S WHY: More than 120 LGBTQ asylum seekers are stuck in Tijuana, with the number sure to grow in coming weeks with the impending arrival of a larger group of people fleeing violence and danger, according to the San Diego LGBT Community Center and RAICES, an organization providing vital legal support to immigrants. Violence associated with gangs and drug trafficking has made Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala some of the world’s most violent countries — and advocates have said that being LGBTQ substantially increases vulnerability to violence, with transgender individuals facing the highest risk. HRC SENDS EXPANDED FOIA TO ICE & CBP FOR RECORDS OF TREATMENT OF TRANS DETAINEES: HRC is seeking all records regarding transgender detainees in ICE custody since January 21, 2017, as well as policies and procedures that guide treatment of transgender people in ICE custody. This follows an FOIA request by HRC in July for all records related Roxana Hernández, a transgender woman who died while in the custody of ICE and CBP. An autopsy that recently became public indicates she was physically abused while in custody. “HRC joins advocates, including efforts led by the Transgender Law Center, in calling for the full release of all records related to this tragedy to ensure those responsible for these cruel and fatal acts are brought to justice,” said JoDee Winterhof, HRC Senior Vice President for Policy and Political Affairs. Introducing live captions & subtitles in Skype

Introducing live captions & subtitles in Skype

Today, Skype joins the world in celebrating the United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities with the launch of call captioning with live captions & subtitles. This new feature works on the latest version of Skype for one-on-one calls with a friend, coworker, or to any phone number, as well as in group calls with a work team or friend group. The live captions & subtitles feature provides a more inclusive experience for everyone in the Skype community, especially for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Skype has been hard at work at making our features more inclusive, and live captions & subtitles are just one way we made Skype calls more accessible. Simple settings allow you to turn them on for a single call or keep them turned on for all your calls. Live captions & subtitles are optimized to be fast, continuous, and contextually updated as people speak. Currently, the captions and subtitles auto-scroll in your call, but coming soon, you’ll find additional viewing options, including the ability to scroll through them in their own side window, so you don’t miss a moment—be it in a video or in the live subtitles. To learn how to use this feature, read our support article.

Coming soon: translations that support over 20 languages

To show our commitment towards inclusivity, we’re also releasing translations that support over 20 languages and dialects in the coming weeks. Whether you’re learning a new language, having a tough time understanding your friend from across the world, or attending a meeting that is not in your native tongue, our new translations will help keep you up to speed. Once you turn translations on through a simple setting toggle, you can read subtitles in the language of your choosing in every call.

Check Out Scenes from ‘The Cher Show’, the Broadway Musical About the Legendary Icon, Opening Tonight: WATCH

Tonight is the opening night of The Cher Show, the new Broadway musical about the life of the living legend in which three actresses take the audience through six decades and 35 songs of the icon’s storied life and career.

In recent days, we’ve had a few juicy glimpses from the show, directed by Avenue Q and Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore. The first is a just-released publicity cut that  features “If I Could Turn Back Time”, “I Got You Babe”, “Believe” and more.

Asked in a recent interview by SiriusXM what it was like seeing her present self talking to her younger self, Cher replied, “I only wish it would have really happened. I could have saved a whole lot of painful sh*t okay? I wish they would have been there.”

Here’s a segment from last week on the TODAY show featuring Stephanie J. Block, Teal Wicks and Micaela Diamond, the three actresses who play Cher at various moments in her life.

Also in the cast are Jarrod Spector as Sonny Bono, Michael Berresse as Bob Mackie, Michael Campayno as Rob Camilletti, Matthew Hydzik as Gregg Allman, and Emily Skinner as Georgia Holt.

Block reveals that she found her “Cher voice” thanks to Crest White Strips.

Said Cher to SiriusXM about seeing Sonny for the first time on stage: “I think that’s one of my favorite parts and you can tell that it’s – he doesn’t have to say anything and the audience gets it. He just has to walk out and he kind of looks to the side and then and people just know who he is and everybody is excited and I get excited too. I mean it was you know it’s, it’s a great part of my life. It was just a really exciting part and she plays it well.”

Cher recently talked to Elle about how she’s been involved in the show: “I’m fussy ’cause it’s my story. I want it to be honest and right and funny and sad, like my life.”

Cher herself has paid several visits to the show during the production. Here’s video of her most recent visit to a preview, at which she was appropriately greeted by a thrilled audience.

Here’s Will & Grace‘s Eric McCormack talking with Kelly Ripa about seeing the show with Cher in the audience.

“Actual Cher was there watching three actual Chers!”
