Aaron Hernandez’s Brother Speaks Out: ‘He Was Struggling with…His Sexuality’
Aaron Hernandez’s Brother Speaks Out: ‘He Was Struggling with…His Sexuality’
Late former NFL player Aaron Hernandez’s brother Jonathan spoke out in an interview with WBZ about his brother’s secrets and his sexual orientation. Aaron Hernandez, who was convicted of murdering Odin Lloyd in 2013, killed himself in his prison cell in 2017.
Jonathan Hernandez, who is publishing a book called The Truth About Aaron, told WBZ that when Aaron Hernandez was 6 years old, he was sexually abused by an older boy, but never told anybody. Jonathan also said his father didn’t approve of homosexuality and so Aaron kept another secret: “You could kind of see what, you know, his conflicts were and what he was struggling with, and it’s, you know, his sexuality … and accepting himself.”
Hernandez’s gay high school lover Dennis SanSoucie spoke out about their relationship in a recent profile in the Boston Globe.
SanSoucie told the paper that his relationship with Hernandez began in middle school and continued through high school. Their parents had known each other. SanSoucie’s father Tim had once been on the receiving end of a punch from Hernandez’s father when Tim was coaching their sons’ youth tackle football team.
In high school Dennis SanSoucie and Aaron Hernandez had become something of a phenomenon on the football team. SanSoucie was the quarterback and Hernandez broke a Connecticut high school record by catching 67 passes from SanSoucie.
SanSoucie told the Globe that they got high on marijuana often, and strove to hide their relationship: “Me and him were very much into trying to hide what we were doing. We didn’t want people to know.”
The profile also revealed that Hernandez’s family, particularly his father, was highly homophobic, and objected when Aaron came home one day as a young student and said he wanted to be a cheerleader.
‘Faggot’ was used all the time in our house,” said Hernandez’s brother Jonathan. “All the time. Standing. Talking. Acting. Looking. It was the furthest thing my father wanted you to even look like in our household. This was not acceptable to him.”
SanSoucie is now an out gay man, according to the profile, and believes Hernandez would be proud of him for talking about their relationship: “I really truly feel in my heart I got the thumbs-up from him.”
Shayanna Jenkins-Hernandez, Hernandez’s fiancee, wrote about rumors he was gay in the foreword to a book published in August by defense attorney Jose Baez.
Wrote Jenkins-Hernandez, via the Boston Herald: “There has been much speculation about Aaron’s sexuality since his death. I can say this: Aaron was very much a man to me. I saw no indication that he was gay or homosexual. I wish I had known how he felt, just so we could have talked about it. I wouldn’t have disowned him. I would have been supportive. I can’t fault him if he was feeling that way. When you love someone so much you just want to be there to support them. The fact that he felt he couldn’t come out to me or he couldn’t tell me these things hurts, because we had that bond. I’ve accepted that he may have been the way he was said to be, or that it may not be true. Regardless, I won’t know.”
In an Oxygen network special which aired in March, Aaron Hernandez Uncovered, defense attorney George Leontire said the former NFL player was tortured over the fact he was gay,
Said Leontire: “Aaron and I talked about his sexuality. This man clearly was gay. [He] acknowledged it. Acknowledged the immense pain that it caused him…I think that he also came out of a culture that was so negative about gay people that he exhibited some self-hatred.”

HRC Statement on OSCE Action to Investigate Anti-LGBTQ Atrocities in Chechnya
HRC Statement on OSCE Action to Investigate Anti-LGBTQ Atrocities in Chechnya
Today, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization, responded to a decision by 16 countries at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), including the U.S., to invoke the “Moscow Mechanism”, which authorizes a fact-finding mission to investigate anti-LGBTQ atrocities that have occurred in Chechnya over the last 18 months — and the Russian government’s failure to respond.
For more than 18 months, HRC has worked to shine a spotlight on the dire situation unfolding in Chechnya through the #EyesOnChechnya campaign. In that time, the Trump-Pence White House has refused to publicly condemn the systematic torture, abuse, and murder of LGBTQ people occurring in Chechnya, even as Vladimir Putin has licensed the violence to continue. While the U.S. Treasury Department did place sanctions on certain Chechen officials in response to their human rights violations, and Congress passed bipartisan resolutions condemning the atrocities, President Trump has never once spoken out against what has taken place there. In July, on the eve of the Trump-Putin summit in Helsinki, HRC projected an enormous message on the Presidential Palace demanding that Trump and Putin immediately condemn and investigate the ongoing anti-LGBTQ crimes against humanity occurring in Chechnya.
“It is well past time for the Russian government to hold accountable the perpetrators of violence against LGBTQ people in Chechnya,” said HRC Government Affairs Director David Stacy. “It is unconscionable that Vladimir Putin has allowed Chechnya’s human rights violations to go on with impunity for so long. With this investigation, we will finally get an objective multinational report on the atrocities against LGBTQ people in that region and the key perpetrators behind them. This is a big step toward justice for those targeted by violence, and for preventing anti-LGBTQ violence in the future.”
The 16 countries voting to invoke the Moscow Mechanism were Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.
On April 1, 2017, Novaya Gazeta, a Russian independent media outlet, first broke the news that Chechen authorities had rounded up and detained in secret prisons more than 100 men who were suspected of being gay or bisexual. Chechen leaders have denied these accusations, going so far as to deny the very existence of LGBTQ people in Chechnya — a claim the Russian government astonishingly repeated. Nonetheless, there have been numerous verified reports of torture and at least three and possibly as many as 20 men have been killed.
Chechen officials have also reportedly encouraged families to murder relatives they suspect might be gay or bisexual. While the initial detentions and attacks targeted men suspected of being gay or bisexual, the campaign has also brought about a surge in lesbian women sharing stories about humiliation, abuse, and threats they have faced from male relatives or from others. Transgender Chechens have also fled violence.
The Trump-Pence White House has refused to publicly condemn the attacks. In September 2017, a Washington Post article quoted a State Department spokesperson who said the U.S. will “continue to raise our concerns about this situation with Russian authorities.” While former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson did reportedly write a private letter to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov raising the issue, that letter was never released publicly nor was it accompanied by any public statement on Chechnya. In October last year, HRC filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the U.S. Department of State for all records regarding that letter — a request that has yet to be fulfilled. While the White House has remained silent, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate have passed bipartisan resolutions condemning the atrocities.
Since news of the attacks first broke, HRC has sounded the alarm through an #EyesOnChechnya campaign and repeatedly called on Donald Trump and Mike Pence to speak out and take action. In March, HRC also released a letter from HRC President Chad Griffin to Trump calling on him to end his deafening silence and publicly condemn the attacks as crimes against humanity. In June, a gay Chechen refugee joined HRC in Washington for a series of meetings with U.S. government officials, where he shared how he had been brutally tortured in Chechnya and managed to flee to safety in Canada with the help of the organization Rainbow Railroad. HRC also shared the first-hand story of one of the Chechen survivors on World Refugee Day.

Daryl Metcalfe, who you may remember as the Pennsylvania lawmaker who freaked out when his colleague touched his hand, snapping “I’m a heterosexual,” is back to his dirty anti-gay deeds.

CBS Pittsburgh reports: ‘A campaign mailing by Metcalfe is being denounced by his Democratic opponent, Daniel Smith, Jr., for making an issue of Smith’s sexuality…In the mailing, Metcalfe calls out Smith for being endorsed by “liberal gay activist groups,” and then uses a photo of Smith with Gov. Tom Wolf and another man, identified as Smith’s husband in quotation marks. Smith is legally married to that man…But the Cranberry Republican says it’s Smith, not him, who has made sexuality an issue by accepting support and money from gay activist groups.“He’s the one who’s made it an issue. More than a quarter of his funding has come from a gay activist in Philadelphia,” says Metcalfe.”
