RAINBOW WAVE: GLAAD celebrates history-making midterm election outcomes

GLAAD

GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, today celebrated the LGBTQ-affirming wave of elections in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as key victories in Governorships and Statehouses nationwide. GLAAD also applauded voters in Massachusetts for supporting a “Yes” vote on Question 3, upholding the state’s transgender nondiscrimination law which protects transgender people from discrimination in public spaces like restaurants, hotels and hospitals. The victory in Massachusetts marks the first statewide popular vote in favor of rights for transgender Americans.

The 2018 midterm elections were historic for LGBTQ, people of color and women candidates as several swept to victory in a wave of opposition to the Trump Administration’s anti-LGBTQ, hate-fueled, and anti-woman policies. As of this morning, the LGBTQ Victory Fund notes that LGBTQ people won 8 federal office seats, 86 state office seats, and 34 local office seats. Sharice Davids of Kansas became the first out Native American woman elected to Congress. Angie Craig of Minnesota and Chris Pappas of New Hampshire became their states’ first out officials elected to Congress. Jared Polis of Colorado became the first openly gay person elected Governor. Bi incumbent Governor Kate Brown of Oregon was re-elected to a new term and incumbent Senator Tammy Baldwin will continue to represent Wisconsin as an out U.S. Senator. Out incumbent members of Congress David Cicilline of Rhode Island, Sean Patrick Maloney of New York, Mark Pocan of Wisconsin and Mark Tacano of California were all re-elected.

“This election is shaping up to be truly historic for LGBTQ candidates and, coupled with the change in leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, shows a rejection of the hate-fueled politics of the Trump Administration that have heartlessly targeted LGBTQ people, women, immigrants, Muslims and all vulnerable populations,” said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. “The new House of Representatives is a critical check against the Trump Administration’s continued abuse of power and a strong signal that acceptance and inclusion are core American values. We must continue to grow the energy and enthusiasm from diverse voters across the country as LGBTQ Americans and our allies continue to push forward for equal protections under the law and grow support for writing explicit anti-discrimination into the U.S. Constitution.”

Last month, GLAAD launched its first-ever ‘Electing Acceptance’ candidate survey – the only national candidate survey dedicated to LGBTQ acceptance – which received responses from 356 candidates running for U.S. House and U.S. Senate seats, as well as for Governor and Lieutenant Governor, in the 2018 midterm election. 245 Democratic candidates responded and only 32 Republican candidates responded. 99% of the Democrats who responded are categorized as ‘allies,’ meaning they responded they are ‘comfortable’ across seven scenarios involving LGBTQ people.

In the lead up to the election, GLAAD launched the Amp Your Voice campaign and online action center, where users were encouraged to register to vote, take action on state and federal legislation, contact elected officials, and participate in other GLAAD actions to inspire LGBTQ Americans and allies to vote in the midterm elections. GLAAD’s Trump Accountability Project has documented more than 81 direct attacks on LGBTQ people – and especially transgender people – since President Trump took office. These attacks include ongoing efforts to ban transgender soldiers from openly serving in the military, revoking non-discrimination protections for transgender youth at school, supporting religious exemptions that would lead to discrimination against LGBTQ people, and, most recently, attempting to erase transgender people’s identities by redefining and restricting the legal meaning of “sex” to sex assigned at birth.

FIFA Pro Gamer Banned for Calling Opponent a ‘F*g’ Says He Didn’t Know the Word Was Anti-Gay: WATCH

Tass Rushan, a FIFA European Champion pro gamer who was banned from competing by EA after he called an opponent a “fag” said he didn’t know the word was anti-gay because he’s from London. Rushan then apologized

Said Rushan in a video posted to YouTube: “It’s a very unfortunate, unintentional misunderstanding from my end. Due to where I’ve been brought up, the connotation of that word from my perspective until now, it was just another word for prick or idiot. Not even one per cent of me knew it had any type of derogatory connotation towards homosexuality at all. First of all, if I knew it did, there is no way I’m saying anything like that. I would never say anything like that, trust me. I think some of you guys could back me up on this. Who’s from London? Did you know that word had that connotation?”

Seth Meyers Celebrates Defeat of Kim Davis and the ‘Blue Ripple’ as Dems Take Back the House: WATCH

Seth Meyers looked at the “blue ripple” made by Democrats who took back the U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday

Said Meyers: “If you’ve been in the desert for two years, a little splash of water feels like a damn tsunami.”

CBS noted that last night’s results looked like the House and the Senate are on two different planets.

Quipped Meyers: “That’s right. The Senate is on a different planet. That’s why Ted Cruz looked like he burst out of someone’s chest.”

Meyers then took note of all the historic elections that took place last night, celebrating the victory of gay Colorado Governor-elect Jared Polis.

Meyers also mocked the loss of Rowan County, Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, infamous for being jailed after denying marriage licenses to gay couples.

Said Meyers: “In a huge victory, Kim Davis…lost her reelection bid. And fun fact. Her opponent was a gay wedding cake!”

Meyers explained that House Democrats now have the power to investigate Donald Trump.

“If you don’t believe me,” said Meyers. “Trump was just photographed trying to sneak 20 years of tax returns out of the White House.”

HOUSE FLIPS WITH HISTORIC VICTORIES FOR HRC-BACKED, PRO-EQUALITY CANDIDATES NATIONWIDE: HRC-backed candidates surged to victory last night and are poised to help pull the emergency brake on the Trump-Pence Administration with a pro-equality majority in the House. On a historic night, voters elected a record number of LGBTQ candidates. In the lead up to the midterms, HRC made a $26 million investment in the largest grassroots expansion in its 38-year history and deployed 150 HRC staff to more than 70 congressional, targeted senate and key statewide races across 23 states. More from HRC.

A record number of LGBTQ lawmakers were elected at all levels. Notably, Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin was re-elected to the U.S. Senate. Nevada’s Jacky Rosen was elected to the U.S. Senate. Jared Polis of Colorado became the first openly gay man to be elected governor in the U.S. Openly bisexual Oregon Governor Kate Brown, the first elected LGBTQ governor in history, was re-elected. Sharice Davids of Kansas became the first gay Native American lawmaker in Congress. Minnesota’s Angie Craig became the state’s first LGBTQ person elected to Congress. And, in a historic affirmation of equality, voters in Massachusetts overwhelmingly upheld non-discrimination protections for transgender people in public spaces.

“Yesterday, millions of LGBTQ voters and allies across the nation rejected the politics of hate and fear and put Donald Trump and Mike Pence on notice,” said HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin). “The days of attacking LGBTQ people for political gain are over, and the American people will not stand for lawmakers who try to drum up votes by trafficking in hate. Thanks to millions of Americans who stood up and fought back, we have succeeded in restoring a sane, pro-equality majority to the House and placing a check on this administration’s hateful agenda. To the 3 million members of the Human Rights Campaign who have worked tirelessly for the last 18 months to out-organize and out-mobilize anti-LGBTQ extremists nationwide, thank you for making history tonight. Together we have sent a loud and clear message that if you come for us, then we will come for you on Election Day.”

In the summer of 2017, the Human Rights Campaign launched HRC Rising, the largest grassroots expansion in the organization’s 38-year history. Since then, HRC has endorsed more than 480 pro-equality candidates nationwide, and deployed 150 staff to organize and mobilize voters in more than 70 congressional, targeted senate and key statewide races across 23 states. HRC also backed more women and people of color than in any election cycle in its history: 45 percent of HRC’s endorsees were women — including 55 percent of non-incumbent candidates — and nearly one-third were people of color.

On #ElectionNight, @HRC-backed candidates surged to victory.

We can pull the emergency brake on the Trump-Pence administration with a pro-equality majority in the House.

HRC helped register more than 32,000 voters and recruited more than 4,200 volunteers, who worked more than 8,500 shifts and 30,000 volunteer hours. In the critical final four days of the campaign, HRC staff and volunteers in get-out-the-vote efforts alone knocked on more than 80,000 doors, and held 36,400 conversations with voters at their doors and by phone on behalf of our endorsed candidates.

YES ON THREE: Massachusetts voters by a 2-1 margin maintained a 2016 law protecting transgender people from discrimination in critical public accommodations including restaurants, hotels, hospitals, stores and public transportation – the first time gender identity non-discrimination protections were on a statewide ballot independent of protections based on sexual orientation. HRC serves as a founding executive committee member of Freedom for All Massachusetts, a coalition of national and state equal rights organizations, which led the successful Yes on 3 Campaign. More from HRC, The Hill, and Advocate.

VICTORY: Massachusetts voters uphold non-discrimination protections for trans people in public spaces.
