DNC Rips Mike Pence for Lying, Failing to Mention LGBTQ People in World AIDS Day Speech for Second Year in a Row

DNC Rips Mike Pence for Lying, Failing to Mention LGBTQ People in World AIDS Day Speech for Second Year in a Row

Vice President Mike Pence, who said in 2000 that he was in favor of sending money allocated to care for people with HIV/AIDS to organizations that provide gay conversion therapy, failed to mention the LGBTQ community in his World AIDS Day speech for the second year in a row.

The Democratic National Committee blasted Pence in an email, listing some of the lies he told, and some of the truths he forgot to mention:

THE LIES HE TOLD

Pence boasted about the success of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program, despite the fact the Trump administration diverted funds from the program to offset the costs of its family separation policy.

Pence celebrated the 15th anniversary of PEPFAR, calling it “one of the most successful investments in health care and humanitarian aid in American history,” while Trump’s budget proposal slashed the initiative’s funding.

Pence claimed Trump brought a “renewed energy and focus” to the battle against HIV/AIDS.

I mean, come on. [see below]

THE TRUTHS HE FORGOT TO MENTION

Trump fired the remaining members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS after several members quit because Trump “doesn’t care” about the issue.

Trump still hasn’t appointed anyone to lead the White House Office of National AIDS Policy.

Trump announced the “Deploy or Get Out” rule, which could remove HIV+ military personnel from service.

Pence, while governor of Indiana, opposed a needle exchange program and exacerbated the local HIV/AIDS crisis.

HYPOCRISY ALERT — MIKE PENCE DELIVERS REMARKS FOR WORLD AIDS DAY: Pence has spent his career putting people in danger by denying them access to HIV prevention and treatment. From spreading misinformation about condom use, to contributing to a major outbreak of HIV and AIDS in Indiana, Pence has been reckless with the health and lives of those he has sworn to serve. The Trump-Pence administration said it was committed to ending the HIV epidemic, but redirected millions of crucial funds for HIV treatment and cancer research to fund their unconscionable family separation policy. And last December, Trump & Pence fired all remaining members of the President”s Advisory Council on HIV and AIDS — and have left the council vacant since. Get the story behind The Real Mike Pence from HRC. More from Independent Journal Review.

.@mike_pence marking #WorldAIDSDay right now is truly the height of hypocrisy. From spreading misinformation about condom use, to contributing to a major outbreak of HIV & AIDS in his home state, Pence has put ideology before the health & lives of countless people. #RealMikePence

AS NATIONAL ADOPTION MONTH COMES TO A CLOSE, IT’S TIME TO PUT LOVE FIRST: There are more than 100,000 children across the U. S. waiting to be adopted. Yet, the fight to allow qualified LGBTQ parents to adopt children desperately in need of loving, safe, supportive homes is still being waged. Writes HRC Foundation Director of the Children, Youth & Families Program Ellen Kahn, “As a lesbian mom, I know that my ability to be a loving, supportive parent is not at all compromised by my identity. And as a social worker, who has counseled so many LGBTQ families through this process, I’ve seen the amazing, transformational results for both the children and parents.” More from Openly.

MEET THE FORMER 4-H DIRECTOR WHO FOUGHT TO KEEP LGBTQ-INCLUSVIE GUIDANCE, AND LOST HIS JOB: Last week, news broke that the Trump-Pence White House and USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue are attacking LGBTQ youth by pressuring the national 4-H youth organization to rescind a policy welcoming LGBTQ participants. The move, made by Heidi Green, then chief-of-staff to USDA Secretary Sonny Perdue, eventually led to the firing of Iowa 4-H Director John-Paul Chaisson-Cárdenas for vigorously defending the LGBTQ-inclusive policy. Miley Cyrus Has Cops in Hot Pursuit in ‘Nothing Breaks Like a Heart’ – WATCH

Miley Cyrus returns on the epic Mark Ronson “sad banger” country-pop track “Nothing Breaks Like a Heart”.

The clip, in which Miley outruns police on an L.A. freeway (the video was actually shot in Kiev, Ukraine) features the singer delivering break-up lyrics calmly and deliberately amid chaotic scenes dripping in symbolism – football players taking a knee, children at a shooting range, lesbians in a jacuzzi – until she picks up Ronson, the car flips, and we’re done.

HRC Sits Down with Parents for Trans Equality Council’s Ashley Rhodes-Courter and Erick Smith

HRC Sits Down with Parents for Trans Equality Council’s Ashley Rhodes-Courter and Erick Smith

Post submitted by Sula Malina, HRC Children, Youth and Families Program Coordinator

HRC recently sat down with Ashley Rhodes-Courter and Erick Smith, members of HRC Foundation’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council from Florida. Ashley and Erick are the proud parents of three young children — the oldest of whom is transgender — and are the founders of The Foundation for Sustainable Families. Their non-profit provides direct services to children and families, and works with other organizations to meet the needs of the most vulnerable.

What inspired you to join HRC’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council?

Advocacy has always been a cornerstone of our family. Ashley grew up in foster care, which inspired her to become a social worker. As foster parents, we have cared for more than 25 children. Our daughter, Skyler, was also adopted from foster care. Skyler began her social transition at four years old. We joined the Council to be a voice for transgender children and families, and we hope to help bring about more awareness and best practices when working with LGBTQ children in foster care or those who come from high-risk situations.

What part of HRC’s work do you connect with the most?

As the parents of a transgender child, we are so thankful for HRC and the many ways they support children and families. HRC’s comprehensive Welcoming Schools resources have been invaluable to our family and schools in our community groups. We also continue to advocate for more open adoption practices, which is an important part of our work as allies.

This November, we celebrate National Adoption Month. Why is this month important to you as parents of a trans child?

National Adoption Month is special to us because adoption saved Ashley’s life. Young people in the foster care system are disproportionately impacted by homelessness, addiction and intimate partner violence — Ashley watched this play out with most of her peers and even her own brother. Our daughter, Skyler, was almost murdered prior to entering foster care, and we were able to adopt her just before her second birthday. We want to ensure that every child has the chance to find a safe and committed family to love them unconditionally and indefinitely.

What’s one message you have for other parents of transgender children or who are considering fostering or adopting a trans child?

Being a parent means loving your child unconditionally and constantly seeking ways to help them thrive. It’s also important to understand that being LGBTQ is not a choice. Children can’t choose who they are any more than they can choose the environments they are born into. Foster children face often insurmountable odds without a support system that loves, educates and cares for their entire well-being.

HRC Foundation’s Parents for Transgender Equality Council is a group of 24 inspiring parents of transgender youth from across the country. The council serves as a coalition of the nation’s leading parent-advocates working for equality and fairness for transgender people, with the intention of connecting, mobilizing and amplifying many of the most powerful voices of love, inclusion and support for transgender equality.

British MP Reveals He is HIV-Positive in Moving Speech Ahead of World AIDS Day: WATCH

British MP Reveals He is HIV-Positive in Moving Speech Ahead of World AIDS Day: WATCH

British MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle told the House of Commons that he is HIV-positive in an effort to battle stigma about the disease ahead of the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day.

Said Russell-Moyle of World AIDS Day: “Such events are also deeply personal to me. Next year I will be marking an anniversary of my own – 10 years since I became HIV positive. It has been a long journey, from the fear of acceptance and today, hopefully, advocacy, knowing that my treatment keeps me healthy and protects any partner that I may have.”

Russell-Moyle described what it was like being diagnosed with HIV: “When you get that call from the clinic and they just say: ‘You need to come in.’ They don’t tell you the details, and you know immediately that something is going to be wrong….So all the different worst case scenarios flash through your mind….At the same time you are working out all the ways that this is some joke, some technical error, some tiny thing that they’re going to tell you that you’re going to be laughing about later on…and then they tell you and it hits you like a wall…Nothing quite prepares you for when they say those words…You walk out feeling totally numb, with a million things going through your mind, and at the same time a sense of absolute nothingness.”

Russell-Moyle made a point in explaining how being HIV-undetectable means he is not able to transmit the virus. He also said that he wanted to bring awareness that the world is on the cusp of eradicating HIV “but we are at a fault in the road” with cuts to public health threatening a universal roll-out of PrEP, the pill that prevents HIV.

He added: “I wanted to be able to stand here in this place and say to those who are living with HIV that their status does not define them. We can be whoever we want to be, and to those who have not been tested, maybe because of fear, I say to you: it is better to live in knowledge than to die in fear.”
