Gay Rights Icon Harvey Milk to Be Remembered in Candlelight Walk Tonight, 40 Years After His Assassination
Gay Rights Icon Harvey Milk to Be Remembered in Candlelight Walk Tonight, 40 Years After His Assassination
Gay rights icon Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone will be remembered on November 27 at 7 pm with a candlelight walk from the plaza named for Milk to City Hall, where they were assassinated by SF Supervisor Dan White 40 years ago.
The walk, which will echo the spontaneous march that took place shortly after the murders, is being organized by the Harvey Milk LBTQ Democratic Club, which writes: “In November of 1978, bookending the Thanksgiving holiday, the city of San Francisco and, it might be said, the world was changed forever. The double horror of the tragedy at Jonestown, followed by the slaying of Harvey Milk and George Moscone was a crushing trauma to the heart and soul of San Francisco, and yet in that darkness we rose together in candlelight not only to remember those we had lost but to strengthen and galvanize ourselves to give them voice to continue their fight and and vision for the future….In honour of that same eloquent response, the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club invites all to join us in quiet reflection from those who knew these great advocates of social justice at Harvey Milk Plaza. Following this, we will walk in candlelight to the steps of City Hall where current community leadership will echo their vision, just as those who were there did that warm November night in 1978.”
Said Sally Miller Gearhart of the march in 1978: “It was one of the most eloquent expressions of a community’s response to violence that I’ve ever seen, and I think that we as lesbians and gay men, and all the straight people who were marching with us that night – and there were thousands – I think we said it. I think we sent a message to the nation that night about what our immediate response was – not violence, but a certain respect for Harvey and a deep… a deep… regret and feeling of tragedy about it, because Moscone had been our friend as well.”

HRC JOINS MORE THAN 120 CIVIL RIGHTS AND ADVOCACY GROUPS CALLING FOR LONGER COMMENT PERIOD ON EXTENSIVE TITLE IX CHANGES: They are urging Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and her civil rights chief Kenneth Marcus to add 60 days to the comment period for their proposed far-reaching overhaul of rules for how schools respond to sexual harassment and assault allegations. “This is a particularly busy time for students, who are juggling final exams, preparations for winter break, and traveling home for the holidays. Teachers and school administrators are similarly overburdened,” the letter reads. “We ask that the comment period be extended to accommodate these unique challenges faced by students and educators—those whose rights and obligations will be most affected by these proposed changes.” More from National Women’s Law Center and Politico.

Uncle Harvey predicated his own assassination and left these words, 40 years ago, so that we all may live open and authentic lives. His dream for our visibility lives on in all who take off the masks that societal prejudice would have us wear. Thank you Uncle Harvey! #HarveyMilk pic.twitter.com/CB0hyfwfNe

Trump Explodes at Robert Mueller in Tuesday Tweetstorm: ‘A Conflicted Prosecutor Gone Rogue’
News of Paul Manafort’s breached plea deal caused Donald Trump to fly into a rage on Twitter Tuesday morning, lashing out at Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Tweeted Trump: “The Phony Witch Hunt continues, but Mueller and his gang of Angry Dems are only looking at one side, not the other. Wait until it comes out how horribly & viciously they are treating people, ruining lives for them refusing to lie. Mueller is a conflicted prosecutor gone rogue……..The Fake News Media builds Bob Mueller up as a Saint, when in actuality he is the exact opposite. He is doing TREMENDOUS damage to our Criminal Justice System, where he is only looking at one side and not the other. Heroes will come of this, and it won’t be Mueller and his…….terrible Gang of Angry Democrats. Look at their past, and look where they come from. The now $30,000,000 Witch Hunt continues and they’ve got nothing but ruined lives. Where is the Server? Let these terrible people go back to the Clinton Foundation and “Justice” Department!”

Remembering and Honoring Civil Rights Icon Harvey Milk
Remembering and Honoring Civil Rights Icon Harvey Milk
LGBTQ civil rights icon Harvey Milk was assassinated 40 years ago today.
In 1977, Milk made history when he was elected to serve as a San Francisco city supervisor and became one of the first openly LGBTQ elected officials in the country. He was assassinated less than a year later on November 27, 1978.
Milk dedicated his life to advocating for a better and more equitable society, not just for LGBTQ people, but for all who had been marginalized — whether because of their race or ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity, age or socioeconomic status.
“Hope will never be silent,” he famously said.
Indeed, hope can never be silent. This 2018 midterm election proved as much. While we’ve come a long way since Milk’s death, there’s still long way to go.
This election raised the number of openly LGBTQ members of Congress to 10, doubling the number of LGBTQ members in the Senates.
The members include two openly LGBTQ people in the U.S. Senate — Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona; and eight openly LGBTQ people in the U.S. House. The four newcomers include Chris Pappas (NH), Katie Hill (CA), Angie Craig (MN) and Sharice Davids (KS). The four returning LGBTQ members include David Cicilline (RI), Mark Takano (CA), Mark Pocan (WI) and Sean Patrick-Maloney (NY).
And in 2017, Danica Roem made history after being elected as the first openly transgender public official in Virginia.
This historic representation reminds us that Milk’s legacy of living his truth while in public office continues to inspire many LGBTQ people to do the same.
“If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door,” Milk once said.
Now, America is seeing Milk’s legacy reflected in the countless LGBTQ firsts we’ve seen this election — the first openly bisexual senator, the first openly LGBTQ Native American congresswoman and more. Openly LGBTQ people are increasingly running for office and sending a clear message that they’re out, proud and unafraid.
Milk envisioned an America where everyone is afforded the same dignity, respect, rights and protections. Aside from the historic LGBTQ representation this election brought us, the House now has a pro-equality majority that has vowed to prioritize the Equality Act, a bill that would provide explicit protections for LGBTQ people nationwide.
Through our work at HRC, Milk’s legacy lives on. The San Francisco HRC Action Center and Store in the historic Castro District is located in Milk’s former camera shop. In addition to keeping LGBTQ people and allies informed on national issues, the action center engages advocates to push leaders at all levels in support of equality.
Today, we are proud to honor his legacy, vision, sacrifice and impact.
