Four Reminders This Transgender Awareness Week

Four Reminders This Transgender Awareness Week

Celebrated each year, Transgender Awareness Week is a vital opportunity to advocate for the visibility, protection, dignity and rights of trans, non-binary and gender-expansive people around the world. The week culminates on November 20 with Transgender Day of Remembrance, an annual observance honoring the victims of the fatal epidemic of anti-transgender violence that disproportionately targets trans women of color.

To mark Trans Awareness Week, HRC’s Transgender and Gender-Expansive Employee Resource Group has some important reminders to know about how to support the transgender community.

1. When you meet one transgender person… you’ve only met one transgender person.

There is not just one sweeping transgender experience. The term “transgender” describes a collective community of individuals whose gender identities, expressions and/or lived experiences differs from what is typically associated with the sex they were assigned at birth. Trans people have different stories and narratives that make them who they are.

2. Everyone has different personal boundaries.

Refrain from asking transgender people personal questions about their bodies, surgeries and other aspects about their transition process unless you have their consent to do so. And, just because a trans person might have talked with you about one personal topic doesn’t mean they want to discuss everything. And, remember: Different people have different boundaries.

3. Non-binary people can identify as transgender or cisgender — or neither — and that’s OK.

Non-binary describes individuals who do not identify exclusively as men or women, or who do not identify as either at all. A non-binary person may also use the terms genderqueer, gender fluid, gender non-conforming or others to describe their gender identity. It’s essential to always respect the terms that someone uses to describe themself.

4. There is no “right” way to be trans.

Trans people are everywhere and as diverse as the fabric of our nation. They live and work in every town, study at school, shop for the best deals at the mall — or hunt for the best avocados in the produce aisle at your grocery store. You can’t tell if someone is trans just by looking at them, and there is no one, universal way that all trans people live their truths. Not all trans people want surgery or hormones, and no one is more or less trans because of it. Trans people have always been here and #WontBeErased.

WILDFIRES. The number of missing people surged to more than 600 in the deadly California wildfires as the death toll reached 66 statewide.

MIKE PENCE. Trump questions VP’s loyalty: “Mr. Trump has repeated the question so many times that he has alarmed some of his advisers. The president has not openly suggested dropping Mr. Pence from the ticket and picking another running mate, but the advisers say those kinds of questions usually indicate that he has grown irritated with someone.”

JULIAN ASSANGE. Wikileaks founder has been charged under seal: “WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been charged under seal, prosecutors inadvertently revealed in a recently unsealed court filing — a development that could significantly advance the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election and have major implications for those who publish government secrets.”

ARMIE HAMMER. I’m sorry for my ‘unnecessary social commentary’ telling people how to mourn.

MICHAEL AVENATTI. I’m coming for Jacob Wohl over the domestic violence arrest.

Michael Avenatti seems to believe that I am responsible for him raising his hand to a woman. I am not.

Will he release the pictures of his battered victim?

MOVIES. Apple partners with Moonlight producer A24 in multi-year original content deal.

RULING. Neo-Nazis have no First Amendment right to harassment: ‘A lawsuit accusing the publisher of the neo-Nazi site Daily Stormer of coordinating a “terror campaign” of online harassment against a Jewish real estate agent cannot be dismissed on First Amendment grounds, a federal judge in Montana ruled this week.’

THE SOCIAL NETWORK. Facebook’s campaign to attack critics: “While Mr. Zuckerberg has conducted a public apology tour in the last year, Ms. Sandberg has overseen an aggressive lobbying campaign to combat Facebook’s critics, shift public anger toward rival companies and ward off damaging regulation. Facebook employed a Republican opposition-research firm to discredit activist protesters, in part by linking them to the liberal financier George Soros. It also tapped its business relationships, lobbying a Jewish civil rights group to cast some criticism of the company as anti-Semitic.”

HASBRO. Monopoly for Millennials: ‘The lines on the box include “Adulting is hard,” “visit the hottest destinations – from your friend’s couch to the vegan bistro,” and “forget real estate, you can’t afford it anyway.” In this version of the game, players collect chips which represent upvotes on social media instead of money, there’s no real estate to buy and you win by collecting the most experiences on the board, like visiting an artisanal coffee shop or yoga studio.’

ON THE RAG. This week on the gay magazines.

ZAYN MALIK. I’m no longer a practicing Muslim: “I don’t believe you need to eat a certain meat that’s been prayed over a certain way, I don’t believe you need to read a prayer in a certain language five times a day. I don’t believe any of it. I just believe if you’re a good person everything is going to go right for you.”

MORONI FOR PRESIDENT. Gay ex-Mormon Moroni Benally campaigns to lead the Navajo nation.

LIBERAL REDNECK. Comic Trae Crowder inks TV series deal: “ABC has put in development a single-camera comedy starring, created and executive produced by Trae Crowder, known for his stage persona the Liberal Redneck, and his writing and comedy touring partners Corey Forrester and Drew Morgan. The project hails from Ruben Fleischer’s The District and ABC Studios where Fleischer is under a deal. Written by Andrew Reich (Friends), Forrester, Morgan and Crowder, the untitled WellRED project is an ensemble comedy about three best friends in the rural south and the women in their lives.”

FRANK OCEAN. He has made his Instagram public. “Welcome.”

MAROON 5. Adam Levine addresses Super Bowl rumors: “Whoever is lucky enough to get that gig probably is gonna crush it… Whoever does it is probably equal parts nervous and excited. This is all speculative because I don’t know who I’m talking about.”

NEW TUNE OF THE DAY. Jennifer Lopez “Limitless”.

Michelle and Malia Obama Snuck Out of the White House to Soak Up the Public’s Celebration of Marriage Equality

Michelle and Malia Obama Snuck Out of the White House to Soak Up the Public’s Celebration of Marriage Equality

In her new memoir, Becoming, Michelle Obama describes the night that the White House lit up in rainbow colors shortly after the Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality.

Wrote Obama: “Looking out the window, I saw that beyond the gates on Pennsylvania Avenue, a big crowd of people had gathered in the summer dusk to see the lights. The north drive was filled with government staff who’d stayed late to see the White House transformed in celebration of marriage equality. The decision had touched so many people. From where I stood, I could see the exuberance, but I could hear nothing. It was an odd part of our reality.”

She added: “We made our way down a marble staircase and over red carpets, around the busts of George Washington and Benjamin Franklin and past the kitchen until suddenly we were outdoors. Malia and I just busted past the agents on duty, neither one of us making eye contact. The humid summer air hit our faces. I could see fireflies blinking on the lawn. And there it was, the hum of the public, people whooping and celebrating outside the iron gates. It had taken us 10 minutes to get out of our own home, but we’d done it. We were outside, standing on a patch of lawn off to one side, out of sight of the public but with a beautiful, close-up view of the White House, lit up in pride. Malia and I leaned into each other, happy to have found our way there.”

HRC: Proposed Rule Change to Title IX Would Harm Survivors of Sexual Assault

HRC: Proposed Rule Change to Title IX Would Harm Survivors of Sexual Assault

Today, HRC responded to a new proposal from Education Secretary Betsy DeVos to change Title IX in a way that would suppress the voices of survivors of rape and sexual assault and make it easier for their perpetrators to get away with their actions.

Title IX prohibits sex discrimination in any educational program or activity that receives federal funding. Title IX’s prohibition on sex discrimination, as a matter of law, requires schools to address sexual harassment, including sexual violence, as forms of sex discrimination. In addition, Title IX protects students from discrimination on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation, as evidenced by continuing case law, guidance previously issued by the Department of Education, and school district settlements to this effect.

Among the dangerous changes to this regulation is a proposal to permit religiously-affiliated schools the ability to decline to submit a request or notice for a Title IX exemption to the Department of Education on their institutional policies, keeping students and their parents in the dark on whether the school intends to discriminate.

“This rule turns back the clock to a time when our schools swept rape, sexual assault, and harassment under the rug,” said HRC Legal Director Sarah Warbelow. “This is a blatant disregard for the justice of survivors of sexual violence by letting schools off the hook for Title IX obligations and denying survivors, including LGBTQ survivors, their civil right to equal access to education. The only safe place created for schools with this proposed rule is one for perpetrators. These changes are unacceptable and must be rejected.”

LGBTQ people are disproportionately affected by sexual assault and harassment, and the stigma that many LGBTQ people face can make it more difficult for survivors to report. Studies suggest that nearly half of bisexual women have been raped and half of transgender people will experience sexual violence at some point in their lifetimes. According to the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a national survey of high school students, lesbian and bisexual women and gay and bisexual men experienced higher rates of sexual assault than their straight counterparts. In addition, a 2015 study by the Association of American Universities found that 60 percent of gay and lesbian students and nearly 70 percent of bisexual students report being sexually harassed on campus.

In July, representatives from HRC met with other survivors of sexual assault in a meeting with Betsy DeVos to emphasize that it is critical that she and the Department of Education enforce Title IX and maintain the 2011 guidance that details specifically schools’ obligations under Title IX to ensure “prompt and equitable resolution[s]” to complaints of sexual violence.

HRC’s Jordan Dashow wrote a powerful op-ed for The Advocate on how changes to Title IX would affect LGBTQ survivors of sexual violence and is the subject a powerful video released by HRC.
